Why parental controls on Xiaomi Redmi can be a problem
Parental controls on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones are a useful feature to limit childrenβs access to unwanted content, but sometimes it turns into a headache for owners, such as if you bought a used phone with already activated restrictions or forgot the password from your own control. Unlike Google Family Link, which is managed through an account, MIUI integrates restrictions directly into the firmware, which makes it difficult to bypass them.
The main difficulty is that Xiaomi uses two levels of locking: at the MIUI level (embedded settings) and at the application level (for example, through Digital Wellbeing or Google Play), while resetting does not always help β some restrictions are tied to the Mi Account account and persist even after hard reset. In this article, we will discuss all working methods for removing restrictions, including those that do not require knowledge of the password.
Before you take action, make sure the phone is truly yours or you have the right to lift restrictions.Unauthorized bypassing parental controls can violate the device's terms of use and even local law.
Method 1: Disconnect via MIUI settings (if password is known)
If you remember the password from parental control or it is set by default (for example, 1234 or 0000), you can undo the restrictions directly in the MIUI menu. This method works on all Redmi models (including Redmi Note 12, Redmi 10, Redmi 9, etc.) and does not require a data reset.
Instructions:
- π± Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- π Go to the Passwords and Security section β Parental control.
- π Enter the current password (if requested).
- βοΈ Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and select Disable Parental Controls.
- ποΈ Confirm the action by clicking Delete in the dialog box.
If Parental Controls are not on the menu, check the Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls section (on the newer versions of MIUI 14+).

β οΈ Attention: On devices with MIUI Global and the associated Mi Account may require re-authorization after disabling control. If the phone was purchased with hands, make sure that the previous owner untied his account - otherwise you risk blocking access to the features.
Method 2: Reset via Mi Account (if the password is forgotten)
If your password from parental control is lost, but you have access to a Mi Account linked to your phone, you can reset the restrictions via the web interface.
- π§ Mi Account Confirmed (Access to the Account) email/phone).
- π The phone is connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network).
- π The device is enabled synchronization with Xiaomi Cloud.
Step-by-step:
- Go to account.xiaomi.com and log in.
- In the Devices section, find your Redmi and select Control.
- Click Find the device β Additional features β Reset parental control.
- Confirm the action via SMS or email.
- Restart your phone and the restrictions will be lifted.
If you don't have the option to Reset Parental Controls, try an alternative way: in the Mi Account settings on your phone, find Sync and turn off Parental Control manually, and on some firmware, this works even without a password.

Method 3: Hard Reset (complete reset)
If the phone is not tied to Mi Account or you are ready to lose all data, a full reset is guaranteed to remove parental control, a method that is suitable for devices where other methods have failed, but has a critical disadvantage β all files, applications and settings will be erased.
How to make a hard reset on Xiaomi Redmi:
- π Turn off the phone and press the power buttons at the same time + Volume up for 10-15 seconds.
- π€ When the Mi logo appears, release the buttons β you will be taken to Recovery Mode.
- π Use volume buttons to navigate and select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
- π Confirm the action and wait for the process to be completed (5-10 minutes).
- π± Reboot your phone via Reboot β Reboot to System.
| Model Redmi | Combination of buttons for Recovery | Retention time |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | Food + Volume up | 10-15 sec. |
| Redmi 9/9A/9C | Food + Volume up | 8-12 sec. |
| Redmi 8/8A | Food + Volume up + Volume down | 10 seconds. |
| Redmi 7/7A | Food + Volume up | vibrate |
β οΈ Note: On devices with a blocked Mi Account (if the previous owner did not untie the account), after a hard reset, the phone will require entering a login / password from the old account. Without this data, it will be impossible to unlock Redmi without contacting the service center.
Method 4: Bypass ADB (for advanced users)
If you're familiar with the command prompt, you can try disabling parental control via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which doesn't require a data reset, but only works for an unlocked bootloader and USB debugging enabled. On new Redmi models (like the Redmi Note 13), debugging is disabled by default, so it may not work.
Instructions:
- Download and install ADB Tools on PC.
- On your phone, turn on Developer Mode (7 times click on the MIUI version in Settings β About Phone).
- Activate Debugging by USB in Settings β Additional β For developers.
- Connect Redmi to a PC and type in the command line: adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.guardprovider adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.guardprovider
- Reboot the phone.
If the commands donβt work, try an alternative:
adb shell settings put global parental_controls_enabled 0These commands disable the com.miui.guardprovider system application, which is responsible for parental control. Some firmware may require additional deletion of files to /data/system/, but this requires root rights.
What if the ADB canβt see the device?
Method 5: Delete via Safe Mode (without data loss)
If parental controls are installed through a third-party app (like Google Family Link or Kids Place), it can be removed in Safe Mode, a mode where all third-party programs are disabled, which does not affect the system limitations of MIUI, but will help in 30-40% of cases.
How to start Safe Mode:
- π Turn off the phone.
- π Press the power button before the Mi logo appears.
- π When the logo disappears, immediately press and hold the Volume button down until the phone boots up.
- π΅ In the lower left corner of the screen will appear the inscription Safe mode.
In this mode:
- Go to Settings β Applications.
- Find a parental control app (such as Family Link or Kids Place).
- Press Remove or Stop.
- Restart your phone in normal mode.
If the application is not deleted (button is inactive), it is installed as the administrator of the device.
- Go to Settings β Passwords and Security β Device Administrators.
- Uncheck the control application.
- Go back to the list of apps and delete it.
π‘
If Safe Mode doesnβt start, try an alternative way: when you turn on your phone, keep Volume up + Volume down at the same time until the system boots.
What do you do if nothing helps?
If all of these methods do not work, there are two options:
- Official services can reset parental control on a document confirming ownership of the phone (check or warranty card), the cost of the service is from 500 to 1500 rubles, depending on the model.
- Installing custom firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience) via fastboot or TWRP will remove all restrictions completely, but it requires unlocking the bootloader and risks voiding the warranty.
Before you bring your phone to the service, check:
- π§ Has the firmware been updated? MIUI Up to the latest version β sometimes bugs in older versions interfere with resetting.
β οΈ Attention: On devices with MIUI European region (EEA) There may be an additional lock through Google Play Services, in which case, even after resetting, the restrictions may be restored when you connect to the Internet. To avoid this, turn off automatic sync before resetting to Settings. β Accounts.
