Why changing your Mi Account without a password is a difficult task
A forgotten password from Mi Account can become a serious problem for owners of Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones.The fact is that the manufacturer strictly links the device to the account to protect against theft and unauthorized access.
Update the firmware through MIUI Updater;
Use cloud services (e.g. Mi Cloud for backups);
- unlock the loader for installing custom firmware;
Reset the device to factory settings without additional manipulation.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Xiaomi does not provide an official tool for forced change of the linked account β all actions must be confirmed via email or phone, which you may not have access to. However, there are both legal workarounds (restore access) and radical methods (complete reset with bypass locking).In this article, we will discuss all the current methods, including those that work on the latest versions. MIUI 14/15 HyperOS.
Method 1: Restore access to Mi Accounts through official channels
If you forget your password but remember the email or phone number associated with your account, use the standard recovery procedure. This is the most secure method that does not require resetting the device and saves all data.
Go to account.xiaomi.com/pass/forgetPassword, and the system will offer two options:
- π§ Recovery via email - a letter will come to the specified address with a link to reset the password.
- π± Recovery through SMS β The confirmation code will be sent to the linked phone number. Please note: the number must be active and not blocked.
If you donβt have access to either email or phone, try an alternative: log in via Google or Facebook if youβve previously linked these accounts.
β οΈ Warning: If you want to enter an old password when you restore it, but you don't remember it, try leaving the field blank or entering an arbitrary set of characters.

Method 2: Delete Mi Account through device settings (if the current password is known)
If you remember your current Mi Account password but want to change your account, do so in your smartphone settings, which is suitable for devices without hardware locking (for example, after buying a used phone with a linked account).
Instructions:
- Open Settings β Accounts and Sync β Mi Account.
- Click on the gear icon (βοΈ) in the upper right corner and select Delete Account.
- Enter the current password for confirmation.
- Confirm the deletion β the device will be untied from the account.
You can add a new Mi Account or use your phone without it, and note that some features (such as themes in MIUI) will not be available without authorization.
| Action. | Effects of consequences | Password required |
|---|---|---|
| Deleting your account through settings | Smartphone untethered from Mi Account, data in the cloud is stored | Yes. |
| Reset to factory settings | The device is locked (you need to enter a password from the old account) | No, but you do after the reset. |
| Bypassing Fastboot (EDL) | Deleting your account completely, possible loss of data | No. |
Method 3: Bypassing Mi Account lock after reset
If you have already resetted your device through Recovery Mode and now your phone requires you to enter data from your old Mi Account, you will have to use workarounds. Xiaomi willfully locks the devices after the reset if they were tied to your account, so there are no legal ways to circumvent this restriction.
The circumvention will require:
- π₯οΈ Windows computer (Windows recommended) 10/11);
- π Cable USB Type-C (original, undamaged);
- π οΈ Programs: Mi Flash Tool, QFil (for Qualcomm) or SP Flash Tool (for Mediatek);
- π Firmware for your model (download only from official sources, for example, miui.com).
The process involves putting the device into EDL (Emergency Download Mode) mode and firmware through the computer, a risky operation that can lead to a phone "brick" (completely inoperable) if the wrong firmware is selected or the process is interrupted.
β οΈ Note: On models with a locked loader (Xiaomi) 12/13 series, Redmi Note 11/12) roundabout EDL You may need an authorized Xiaomi developer account, but you can't get firmware without it.
What is EDL mode and how to activate it?
Method 4: Use of the Mi Account Unlock Tool
There are many utilities on the web that promise to delete Mi Account without a password, such as Mi Account Unlock Tool, Xiaomi Tool V2 or Miflash Unlock. Most of them are either outdated or require payment. We do not recommend using dubious programs for several reasons:
- π Virus risk β many βhackedβ versions of utilities contain malware;
- πΈ Hidden payments β after a βsuccessfulβ unlocking, payment may be required;
- π« Lockdown IMEI β Xiaomi can lock your device by serial number;
- β οΈ Loss of warranty β any unofficial interference will void the warranty.
If you do choose to use these tools, choose only trusted sources, such as the 4PDA or XDA Developers forums. Before using, back up your data via TWRP (if installed).
π‘
Before using any unlocking tools, check if your device is in the Xiaomi blacklist. Enter IMEI on imei.info. If the device is βBlockedβ, it is not possible to unlock by software methods.
Method 5: Contact Xiaomi Support
If all previous methods have failed, the official path is to appeal for Xiaomi, which is the longest, but also the safest way, especially if the device is warranted.
- Prepare proof of ownership of the device (check, box with IMEI, photos with serial number).
- Send a request to email: support@xiaomi.com (for global version) or via the feedback form at mi.com/support.
- Describe the situation: when the phone was purchased, why there is no access to the account, attach screenshots of errors.
The request is considered for 3 to 14 days, and in some cases, support may request additional data, such as a photo with your device turned on and a note with your name on it, and if the request is approved, you will be sent instructions to unlock or delete the account link remotely.
β οΈ Note: If the phone was purchased from hand and the previous owner did not delete the Mi Account, Xiaomi support will most likely refuse to unlock. EDL or replacement of motherboard).
What to do if nothing helps: radical measures
If none of these things work, and the phone still requires data from the old Mi Account, you'll have to go to extreme lengths.
- π§ Replacing the motherboard is a radical method that is guaranteed to remove the account binding, suitable for older models where the cost of repair is lower than the price of a new device.
- π± Buying a new phone β if Xiaomi has blocked IMEI or the device is in the "black list", unlocking is not possible.
- π Sale of spare parts - working modules (screen, camera, battery) can be sold profitably, offsetting part of the cost.
Some models (such as the Redmi Note 8 Pro or the POCO X3 NFC) have hardware bypassing locks by closing contacts on the board, but this requires soldering skills and circuitry of a particular model, and without experience, such manipulation can permanently disable the device.

If your Xiaomi smartphone is locked after a reset and requires data from Mi Account and official recovery methods donβt work, the only working solutions are firmware via EDL (for Qualcomm) or contacting a service center with proof of purchase.
