When you need a reset on Xiaomi and what it threatens
Resetting to factory settings is a radical, but sometimes the only way to bring Xiaomiβs smartphone back to life. You may find yourself having to βresetβ the device if it starts to brake for no reason, gives up errors when updating MIUI, or you are preparing the gadget for sale. However, on models with Qualcomm processors (for example, Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or POCO F5), a reset via Recovery can lead to the bootloader lock if it was previously unlocked.
The procedure erases all user data: photos, contacts, messages, installed applications and even some system settings, while only those files that are on the file will be saved. SD-map (if installed) and data in the Mi Cloud if synced, it is important to understand that after reset, the device will return to that version. MIUI, which was installed at the plant - it can be both a plus (if you want to get rid of the bugs of the latest update) and a minus (you will have to update again).
The HyperOS models, the new firmware that replaced MIUI in 2026, have been given a little more attention, with the reset logic changing a bit: for example, in Xiaomi 14 or Redmi K70, the way to factory settings is now hidden deeper, and some options require confirmation through Mi Account even when resetting locally.
Preparation for resetting: what to do in advance
Before you click the Reset button, make sure you don't lose important data. Here's a checklist of required actions:
Save contacts in Google Account or Mi Cloud
Transfer photos/videos to PC or cloud
Write down usernames/passwords from apps (especially banking)
Make sure you know the username/password from Mi Account (if linked)
Check the battery charge (minimum 50%)-->
If youβre using Mi Cloud, go to Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud and make sure sync is enabled for all the data you need. Note: Xiaomiβs free cloud only provides 5GB, so for large photo volumes, itβs best to use Google Photos or a physical drive.
A special point is Mi Account. HyperOS models (such as the Xiaomi 13T Pro) may require you to enter a linked account after a reset, even if you do the reset locally. If you forget the password, restore it in advance on account.xiaomi.com. Otherwise, you risk getting a brick, a device that will not pass the initial setup.
β οΈ Note: On smartphones with an unlocked bootloader (for example, after firmware custom recaveri) reset through the standard menu can lead to a hard brick - complete inoperability of the device.
Method 1: Reset via the settings menu (the safest)
This is a standard method that works for most models, from the Redmi 9A to flagships like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, with the main benefit of not requiring a reboot to Recovery and minimizing the risk of errors.
Instructions:
- Open Settings (the gear icon on the main screen).
- Go to About Phone (in HyperOS β About Device).
- Slip on Reset (or Restore and Reset on older versions of MIUI).
- Choose to erase all data.
- Enter. PIN-code or pattern lock, if requested.
- Confirm the action by clicking Reset Settings.
The process will take 5 to 15 minutes depending on the model, the device will reboot and start the initial setup, as after purchase, at which point it may be necessary to connect to Wi-Fi and enter Mi Account data (if the account was linked).

If after reset, the smartphone asks for an old password from Mi Account, which you do not remember, try to restore it through the Xiaomi website. In extreme cases, contact the service center with proof of purchase - they can remove the account binding via IMEI.
Method 2: Reset via Recovery Mode (if the phone is not turned on)
If Xiaomiβs smartphone is stuck on the logo, constantly rebooting or not responding to touch, you will have to use Recovery Mode. This method is also relevant if you forget the pattern lock or password from the device.
- π§ On new models (Xiaomi) 13/14, Redmi Note 12) used MIUI Recovery 4.0 sensory.
- π₯οΈ On older devices (up to Redmi Note 10) β a classic menu with volume button control.
- π If the bootloader was previously unlocked, a reset via Recovery can block it again.
Step-by-step instructions for MIUI Recovery 4.0 (relevant to HyperOS):
- Turn off the phone (press Power + Volume up for 10 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume up and hold until the Mi logo appears.
- Release the buttons and you will be taken to the Recovery menu.
- Choose a language (if available).
- Slip on Wipe Data (Erase Data).
- Confirm the action by selecting Wipe All Data.
- Wait for the process to be completed and press Reboot.
For older models with button control:
- Use the up/down volume for navigation.
- Confirm the choice of the power button.
- Select Wipe data/factory reset, then Yes.
β οΈ Note: On some firmware (for example, EU ROM for POCO F3) Recovery may not have Russian. Be careful when selecting items - an error can lead to the deletion of system files.

Method 3: Remote reset via Mi Cloud (if phone is lost)
If your Xiaomi is stolen or lost, you can try resetting remotely via Xiaomiβs Find Device service, which will only work if you meet three conditions:
- The device is on and connected to the Internet.
- In the settings activated function Find the device.
- You remember the username/password from the Mi Account attached to the phone.
Instructions:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in.
- Select the Find Device tab (Find the device).
- The map will show the location of your smartphone (if it is online).
- In the right menu, click Erase Data.
- Confirm the action by entering the password from Mi Account.
Note that remote reset does not work on all models, such as the Redmi A2 or POCO M6 Pro with HyperOS, this feature may be disabled by default due to Google restrictions.
What if the Mi Cloud canβt see the device?
What to do after a reset: initial setup and data recovery
Once the reset is successful, the device will start in initial setup mode, and there are a few key points here:
- π± On models with HyperOS (for example, Xiaomi 14) will appear a new customization wizard with animations and voice assistant.
- π If you previously tied Mi Account, the system will require you to enter its data to unlock.
- βοΈ When connecting to Wi-Fi, you will be offered to restore data from Mi Cloud or Google Account.
- π On some firmware (for example, EU ROM) Google Play may not be pre-installed β you will have to manually install it.
Algorithm of action:
- Choose the language and region (we recommend Russia for the correct operation of the services).
- Connect to Wi-Fi (required! otherwise you wonβt be able to recover data from the cloud).
- Enter your Mi Account information if requested.
- In the recovery phase, select Restore from Mi Cloud or Restore from Google Account.
- Install a new one. PIN-code.
- Set up your fingerprint/face (if supported).
If you sell or transfer a phone to another person, don't restore your data - just skip the steps with the accounts and complete the setup as a new device.

After resetting on HyperOS models (such as the Xiaomi 13T), some features, such as Game Turbo or Second Space, may need to be re-enabled in the settings.
Common mistakes and their solutions
Even if you follow the instructions correctly, resetting your settings to Xiaomi can go wrong. Consider the typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |

| Recovery Resets Lead to Data Wash Fail Error | The file system is damaged or the bootloader is unlocked | Fastboot your device with the Mi Flash Tool |
| After the reset, there is no net (no catch). SIM-map) | IMEI or modem settings are down | Check the IMEI in *#06#. If missing, restore it via Engineer Mode or firmware. |
| The device stuck on the logo after resetting | Incompatible firmware or interrupted process | Download to Fastboot (Food + Volume Down) and scrolle through the official firmware |
| The camera doesn't work after reset. | Drivers or permission settings have gone down | Update the firmware through Settings β Update the software or reset again |
Particular attention should be paid to models with MediaTek-processors (for example, Redmi). 12C or POCO C55). Recovery is sometimes used to reset them as well. NV-data (modem settings), which leads to network loss, in which case only firmware through the network will help. SP Flash Tool with Format All Checkmark + Download.
β οΈ Warning: If after the reset, the screen says "This device is locked" on a red background, it means that the bootloader is locked and the Mi Account data is incorrect.
