Introduction: Why Xiaomiโs smartphone can be blocked
Forgotten password, pattern lock or PIN-Code is one of the most common problems Xiaomi users have, and according to service center statistics, one in five people ask to unlock a device after unsuccessful input attempts. Rare phone use, password change to โreliableโ (and forgetting it instantly), or even locking after updating MIUI, When the system requires re-entry of data.
But it's not that bad: 90 percent of lockdowns are solved without going to the service. The manufacturer has provided several formal and informal ways to reset passwords, from recovering through Mi Account to using Fastboot mode. The main thing is to follow the instructions and not panic if the phone does not respond to the first attempts to unlock.
In this article, we will discuss all the current password reset methods for Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones (including the models from 2023-2026), as well as how to avoid data loss. If your device is locked right now, scroll to the section "Emergency unlock".
Method 1: Unlocking with Mi Account (official method)
The safest and most recommended method is to use a linked Mi Account, which works if:
- ๐ฑ Device connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network).
- ๐ You remember the username and password from Mi Account that was tied to the phone.
- ๐ The "Find the device" function was activated in the settings.
If all conditions are met, follow the instructions:
- On the lock screen, click "Forgot Password?" (or "Forgot Password?" on English firmware).
- Select "Restore with Mi Account".
- Enter the email or phone number associated with the account and the password.
- Confirm unlocking via SMS or email (if two-factor authentication is enabled).
โ ๏ธ Note: If you have not previously confirmed ownership of the device (for example, after buying used), the system may request Proof of Ownership โ a photo of the check or box with the device. IMEI. Without this, unlocking through Mi Account will not be possible.

Method 2: Reset password through Recovery Mode (without data loss)
If the Mi Account is not tied or you donโt remember the login details, the next step is to use Recovery Mode, a method that is suitable for most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models released after 2018. Importantly, the method only works if the device does not activate the feature โFactory Reset Protectionโ (FRP).
Instructions:
- Turn off the phone with a long press of the power button.
- Press the combination of Loudness up + Power and hold for 10-15 seconds until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select the language (usually English or Chinese).
- Go to Wipe Data โ Wipe All Data (or Clear Data on older versions).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some models (such as Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12) may require data entry from the previously linked Mi Account after resetting via Recovery. If you donโt remember this data, the phone will turn into a brick and call the service center.
| Xiaomi model | Supports reset via Recovery? | Do you need a Mi Account after a reset? |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | Yes. | Yes (if tied up) |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14 | Yes. | Yes (required) |
| POCO F4/F5 | Yes. | No (on global firmware) |
| Xiaomi Mi A2/A3 (Android One) | No. | โ |

Method 3: Unlocking through ADB (for advanced users)
If you have access to USB-Debugging (was enabled before blocking), you can reset your password via Android Debug Bridge (ADB). This method requires a computer and basic command line knowledge, but stores all the data on the device.
Step-by-step:
- Install ADB and Fastboot Tools on PC.
- Connect the locked phone to your computer via USB.
- Open the command prompt (cmd) and type: Adb devices Make sure the device is identified (should appear its serial number).
- Enter the commands alternately: adb shell su rm /data/system/gesture.key rm /data/system/password.key rm /data/system/locksettings.db rm /data/system/locksettings.db-wal rm /data/system/locksettings.db-shm reboot
Once rebooted, the password will be reset, and important: newer versions of MIUI (14+) may not work because of the increased security, and root rights are required, which are not available on all devices.
1. Install Xiaomi USB Drivers drivers manually.
2. Use the original USB-cable (not all cables support data transmission).
3. Switch the connection mode on the phone (if there is access to the notification curtain) to "File transfer".-->
Method 4: Using Fastboot and Firmware (for experienced)
If previous methods didn't work, the radical option is to run the device through Fastboot, which deletes all data but is guaranteed to unlock the phone, and is suitable for models with a locked bootloader.
What you need:
- ๐ป Computer with Windows/Linux.
- ๐ Original. USB-cable.
- ๐ฆ Fastboot firmware ROM For your model (you can download it on the official Xiaomi website).
- ๐ Mi Flash Tool Tool.
Instructions:
- Turn off the phone and put it in Fastboot mode (clamp Volume down + Power).
- Connect to your PC and check for device detection by command: fastboot devices
- Unpack Fastboot ROM firmware into a folder without Cyrillic characters.
- Open the Mi Flash Tool, select the firmware folder and click Refresh.
- At the bottom, select "Clean All" and click "Flash".
It takes 5-10 minutes. Once rebooted, the phone will be like new, without password, but without your data. Attention: on models with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (such as Xiaomi 14), you may need to unlock the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool, which takes up to 72 hours of latency.

Fastboot firmware is the only way to unlock your phone if you forget your Mi Account password and are disabled USB-But it will cause total data loss and could invalidate the warranty.
Method 5: Emergency unlocking (if nothing helps)
If all of the above methods fail, there are two options:
- Contact the Xiaomi Service Center. ๐ Find the official service on the website mi.com. ๐ฐ The cost of unlocking: from 1,500 to 5 000 rubles (depending on the model). โณ Time: 1-3 days.
Use of paid online services.
There are sites that offer remote unlock for 500 to 2000 rubles, the risks of fraud, data theft, malware installation. We do not recommend this method, but if you do decide, check the reviews and use a virtual card to pay.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Don't trust "masters" who promise to unlock your phone in 5 minutes through "secret commands"; most often, these are scammers who either won't do anything or steal your data.
How to avoid blocking in the future
To avoid the problem of forgotten passwords again, follow these tips:
- ๐ Use biometric unlocking (fingerprint or facial recognition) in addition to PIN-code.
You should also disable the โFactory Reset with 10 Incorrect Typesโ option (if your model has one), which will prevent accidental data loss if the phone falls into the hands of a child or is stolen.
๐ก
Set up a data backup in Mi Cloud (Settings โ About Phone โ Backup). Even if you have to reset your phone, you can recover contacts, photos and apps once unlocked.
