Forgot the pattern lock or PIN-Xiaomi code, and Mi Account is not tied? Fastboot mode is the only way to get back access to your phone without losing data (with the right actions). 3 working methods of resetting passwords via Fastboot, including commands ADB, bypassing locks on new firmware MIUI 14/15 and solving typical errors like FAILED (remote: 'unknown command').
The methods from the instruction were tested on Redmi Note 10/11/12 Pro, POCO X3/X4/X5, Mi 11/12/13 and other Xiaomi smartphones on Qualcomm and Mediatek chipsets. If your phone is not detected by a computer or gives an error when connecting, there is a section with solutions at the end of the article.
โ ๏ธ Important: Resetting your password through Fastboot requires an unlocked bootloader. If you have never officially unlocked it through the Mi Unlock Tool, the methods below will not work - you will need to log in to Mi Account or contact the service center.
1.Preparation for password reset via Fastboot
Before you start resetting, make sure that all the prerequisites are met, and without them, the process will result in an error or a blink (complete failure) of the device.
You'll need:
- ๐ Original. USB-cable (better from the phone kit โ cheap cables often donโt transmit data to Fastboot).
- ๐ป Computer on Windows 10/11 (on Mac/Linux team ADB differ).
- ๐ฑ Battery charge โฅ 50% โ when discharged during the process, the phone can turn off and turn into a โbrickยป.
- ๐ Unlocked bootloader (if not unlocked earlier โ see the section on bypassing without Mi Account).
Also download and install:
- ๐ ๏ธ Platform Tools (ADB & Fastboot by Google.
- ๐ Firmware for your model (choose the version of Fastboot) ROM, Not Recovery).
- ๐ Mi Unlock Tool (if the bootloader is blocked).
โ ๏ธ Note: If the phone was purchased from hand and tied to someone else's Mi Account, resetting the password through Fastboot will not delete the account. In this case, only official unlocking through the Xiaomi website (if there is a check) or contacting the service will help.
2.How to enter Fastboot mode on Xiaomi
Fastboot mode on Xiaomi is launched by a combination of buttons or through ADB. If the phone is completely locked (does not respond to touch), use the hardware method:
- Turn off the phone with a long press Power + Volume up (10-15 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume down and hold for 5-10 seconds until the Fastboot logo appears (Android robot labeled FASTBOOT).
If the screen is not responding, but the phone is on:
- Connect your smartphone to your PC via USB.
- Open the command line (Win + R โ enter cmd).
- Enter the command: adb reboot bootloader The phone will automatically reboot to Fastboot.
โ ๏ธ Note: On some models POCO (for example, POCO X3 Pro) button combination may be different. If the standard method does not work, try Power + Loudness up + Loudness down at the same time.

3. Method 1: Reset password through Fastboot without data loss
This method works if:
- ๐ Bootloader (Bootloader) is unlocked.
- ๐ฑ Phone is not tied to Mi Account (or you know the username/password).
- ๐ ๏ธ Installed ADB and Fastboot (see section โPreparationยป).
Instructions:
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode to your PC.
- Open the command line in the folder with Platform Tools (press Shift + PCM โ โOpen Command Windowโ).
- Check the connection command: fastboot devices If the device is determined (the serial number appears), continue.
- Enter the command to reset password: fastboot erase userdata fastboot erase locksettings These commands delete account data and lock settings.
- Reboot the phone: fastboot reboot
After the reboot, the phone will prompt you to configure it as new. Your files (photos, videos, documents) will remain intact, but the apps and their data will be deleted.
๐ก
If the fastboot erase locksettings command is followed by a FAILED error (remote: 'not allowed'), then the bootloader is locked. Try method 2 or unlock Bootloader via Mi Unlock Tool.
Method 2: Complete reset (Wipe) via Fastboot
If the first method didn't work or the phone is tied to Mi Account, you'll have to do a full reset (everything, including files, will be deleted), which is guaranteed to delete the password, but requires flashing.
Instructions:
- Download Fastboot ROM for your model from the official Xiaomi website.
- Unpack the archive with the firmware in the Platform Tools folder.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode.
- Launch the file. flash_all.bat (for Windows) or enter manually: fastboot flash all Start the firmware process (takes up the command 5โ15 minute).
- Once completed, the phone will restart to a clean system.
โ ๏ธ Note: New models (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 13) after firmware, you may need to log in to Mi Account, even if you haven't previously been linked to it, it's anti-theft protection, if you don't know your account details, the phone becomes a brickยป.
| Xiaomi model | Does it support a reset without a Mi Account? | Do I need to unlock the Bootloader? |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 8/9/10 | Yes (up to MIUI 12.5) | Yes. |
| POCO X3/X3 Pro | Yes (to MIUI 13) | Yes. |
| Mi 11/12/13 | No (requires Mi Account) | Yes. |
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Partially (depending on region) | Yes. |
5. Method 3: Bypassing locks without Mi Account (for older models)
If you have Xiaomi on a Mediatek chipset (e.g. Redmi 9A, POCO C3) and firmware older than MIUI 12, you can try bypassing the lock via SP Flash Tool or Test Point. This method only works on 30% of models and requires soldering or special equipment.
Instructions:
- Download the SP Flash Tool and firmware for Mediatek.
- Find Test Point on your modelโs motherboard (instructions are searched for โTest Point Phone Modelโ).
- Close the contacts of Test Point with tweezers and connect the phone to the PC.
- In the SP Flash Tool, select the scatter.txt file from the firmware and click Download.
- After the firmware, the phone will boot without a password.
โ ๏ธ Attention: Test Point misuse can make your phone malfunction. If you're not sure about your soldering skills, you'd better go to the service (MIUI 14+) This method does not work due to improved protection.

6. Common mistakes and their solutions
When you reset your password through Fastboot, you often get errors, and we'll look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| FAILED (remote: 'unknown command') | An outdated version of Fastboot or drivers. | Update Platform Tools and reinstall drivers. |
| device not found | The phone is not determined by a PC. | Try another one. USB-cable or port. Check if debugging mode is on USB (If the phone is partially working). |
| FAILED (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed') | The bootloader is locked. | Unlock Bootloader via Mi Unlock Tool (requires binding to Mi Account). |
| The phone is hanging on the Mi logo after the firmware. | Incorrect firmware or interrupted process. | Repeat the firmware by selecting the correct version of Fastboot ROM for your model. |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- ๐ Port port USB โ Try connecting to the back port of the PC (they are more powerful than the front one).
- ๐ Version MIUI โ on MIUI 14/15 Many of the old methods donโt work.
- ๐ ๏ธ Firmware integrity โ download files only from the official Xiaomi website.
๐ก

7. Alternative ways of resetting a password
If Fastboot didnโt help or you canโt unlock the bootloader, try alternative methods:
- ๐ Reset via Recovery: Enter Recovery (Food) + Volume up. Select Wipe Data. โ Wipe All Data. Confirm reset (everything, including files, will be deleted) Only works if you don't have a password set for Recovery.
- ๐ง Recovery via Mi Account: On the lock screen, click "Forgot your password?" email/phone linked to your account. Follow the instructions for resetting.
It doesnโt work if the phone is not connected to the internet.
Reset via Find Device
- Go to i.mi.com from your PC.
- Sign in to the Mi Account.
- Select the device and click โErase Dataโ.
The phone must be connected to the Internet and linked to the account.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On phones with MIUI 14+ and Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset 8 Gen 1/2 (for example, Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Redmi K50 Gaming) password reset without Mi Account is virtually impossible, in which case you only need to contact the service center with documents on the phone.
