Introduction: when you need to reinstall Android and whether you can do without a PC
Xiaomiβs MIUI-based smartphones are known for their stability, but even they sometimes require a complete reinstallation of the operating system. The reasons can range from critical failures after a failed update to virus infection or a desire to return βcleanβ firmware. Many users mistakenly believe that this procedure requires a computer β in fact, you can reflash Xiaomi directly from your phone using built-in tools.
In this article, we will discuss the three official ways to reinstall Android without a PC that work on most Redmi, POCO and Mi models (including Xiaomi 12/13/14, Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO F3/F4/F5). Importantly, the methods differ in complexity and consequences - you can save data somewhere, and you will have to do a complete reset. We will explain the pros and cons of each option in detail, and give checklists for preparation.
Before you start, make sure your phone:
- π At least 50% (preferably 80%) charged β reinstallation can take up to 30 minutes.
- πΆ Connected to stable Wi-Fi - download firmware "weighs" from 1.5 to 3 GB.
- π Not locked down. IMEI or Mi Account (if blocked, unlocking will require PC).
Method 1: Reset to factory settings via MIUI (Save Data) menu
The easiest and safest method is soft resetting through settings, which doesn't require any firmware download, and is suitable if the system is loading but it's not stable. DCIM (Photo/video, Downloads (downloads) and SD-map, but reset all settings, applications and accounts.
How it works:
- The phone uses a backup copy of the factory firmware stored in the recovery section.
- The process takes 5-10 minutes and does not require an internet connection.
- After reset, the MIUI version will remain the same (it will not be updated to a new one).
Step-by-step:
- Open Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Select Reset All Settings (not to be confused with Network Resettings!).
- Enter the password from your Mi Account (if linked) or a pattern lock.
- Confirm the action by clicking Delete Everything.
- Wait for the reboot β the phone will turn on with a clean system, as after purchase.
βοΈ What to do before resetting through MIUI
β οΈ Note: If you have used the Application Protection function (in MIUI 12+) Referred to your account, after reset, some programs may require you to re-enter your password. β Accounts. β Related applications.
Method 2: Update via Recovery Mode (full flashing)
If the phone doesnβt boot or requires a full Android reinstallation with a version update, Recovery Mode will help.
- π Recovery after the "brick" (phone turned on, but hangs on the logo).
- π Manual update to the new version MIUI (if OTA-update doesn't come).
- π§Ή Delete user data and return to factory state.
This method requires official firmware in.zip format, which can be downloaded directly from your phone. Importantly, choose the version exactly for your model (for example, Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G and Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G are different firmware!).
- π Official website MIUI (Choose Recovery. ROM).
- π± Through the Application Update (Settings) β The phone. β Updating the system β Threefold β Select a Service Package).
Installation instructions:
- Download the firmware and rename the file to update.zip (required!).
- Move it to the root folder of internal memory (not in folders!).
- Turn off the phone, then press the Power button + Volume up until the Mi logo appears.
- In the Recovery menu, select the language, then:
Confirm the action and wait for the completion (10-20 minutes).
What if Recovery doesnβt see update.zip?
| Xiaomi model | Combination for entering Recovery | Does he support OTA-update |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO F3/F4 | Food + Volume up | Yes. |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14, Mi 11 | Power + Volume up (hold 10+ seconds) | Yes. |
| POCO X3/X4, Redmi 9/10 | Food + Volume up | Only manual installation update.zip |
| Xiaomi Mi A1/A2/A3 (Android One) | Food + Volume Down | No (Fastboot required) |
β οΈ Note: On models with dynamic memory (e.g. Redmi Note 11 Pro)+) After resetting through Recovery, partition markup can fly. If after rebooting the phone shows 0 GB of memory, run Wipe & Reset β Format Data (this will delete everything, including files on the internal drive!).
Method 3: Using Fastboot without a computer (for advanced)
This method is suitable for advanced users, because it requires Fastboot commands and can potentially cause a phone to break down, but it is the only one that allows you to downgrade the MIUI version or install custom firmware without a PC.
- π± Phone with unlocked bootloader (Bootloader).
- π FastbootTools for app MIUI (available on Google Play).
- π¦ Firmware in.tgz or.img format (downloaded from Xiaomi Firmware Updater).
Step-by-step:
- Unclose the firmware and place boot.img, system.img, etc. files in the folder on the phone.
- Install FastbootTools and provide root access (if required).
- In the app, select Select Images and specify the path to the firmware files.
- Press Flash All and confirm the action.
- The phone will reboot in Fastboot mode and start firmware (takes 5-15 minutes).
Advantages of the method:
- β You can install any version. MIUI (including).
- β Suitable for recovery after a failed custom Recovery (TWRP).
Risks:
- β Without an unlocked bootloader, the phone will turn into a brick".
- β Error in firmware selection can damage modules (camera, sensors).
π‘
Before using Fastboot, check the phone model with the fastboot getvar product command in the terminal (via the Terminal Emulator app). Some firmware (for example, for the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max) are similar in appearance, but incompatible!
How to save data before reinstalling Android
Even if you choose a method without losing data, we recommend backing up. MIUI has built-in tools for this:
- Contacts and communications: π± Export through Contacts β Settings β Export/Import (saves to.vcf file). βοΈ Sync with your Google account or Mi Cloud.
- Photos and videos: πΌοΈ Copy the folder. DCIM on SD-Map or cloud (Google Photos, Mi Cloud). π Use the settings. β Additionally. β Backup to create an archive.
Applications and settings:
- π¦ Enable Backup in Mi Cloud (Settings) β Xiaomi account β Mi Cloud β Backup).
- π§ Save the list of installed applications through Settings β Annexes β Application management β Exports.
For a full system backup (including Wi-Fi settings, wallpaper, application data) use:
- π οΈ Mi Mover (transferring data to another Xiaomi).
- πΎ Swift Backup (requires root) to create an archive with settings.
π‘
If you use Mi Cloud for backup, make sure you have enough space (free 5GB) Photos and videos take up the most space β clear unnecessary files in advance or buy extra space (from 100GB for ~300 rubles / year).
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even when following the instructions, users face problems, and consider common mistakes and their solutions:

| Phone hangs on Mi logo after firmware | Incompatible version of MIUI or interrupted process. | Repeat the firmware through Recovery with a full reset (Wipe All Data). |
| This MIUI version cannot be downgraded | Try to downgrade the MIUI version without unlocking the bootloader. | Use Fastboot or unlock Bootloader via Mi Unlock Tool (requires PC). |
| After reset, there is no network (no SIM catches) | IMEI or modem module is off. | Restore the IMEI via Engineer Mode (code #4636##) or reflash the modem. |
If after reinstalling Android phone:
