Why Xiaomi is blocking desktop changes and when it gets in the way
Desktop protection in MIUI was introduced as a response to frequent complaints from users who accidentally deleted widgets or moved icons, and Xiaomi intended it to prevent unwanted changes, such as when a child picks up a phone and drags all apps into one folder. However, in practice, this βprotectionβ often becomes a headache: you canβt transfer an icon to another screen, delete an unnecessary widget, or even change wallpaper through standard settings.
The problem is especially acute after MIUI 12/13/14 updates, where the lock algorithm has become more aggressive. The system can automatically turn on protection if you suspect "unstable actions" - for example, if you move icons too quickly or change themes often. In some cases, the lock works after resetting or flashing the device. Ironically, even owners of the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or Xiaomi 13 Ultra face this problem, despite the flagship status of the devices.
Before we get to the disablement methods, itβs important to clarify that this is about software blocking the interface, not parental controls or restrictions through Find Device. If your screen is blocked due to theft or loss, these methods will not help, and they are not relevant for devices with enterprise MDM (mobile device management) profiles, where restrictions are imposed by the administrator.
Method 1: Standard shutdown via MIUI settings
The most obvious method is to use built-in system options, which works on most devices with MIUI 10 and later, but can be hidden on some firmware for the European or global market.
- Open the settings (cog icon).
- Go to the Desktop section (or Home in English versions).
- Find Desktop Protection (could be called Layout Lock or Lock Home Screen Layout).
- Move the slider to the off position.
If this is not the case, your version of MIUI uses a different lock mechanism. For example, on POCO F5 or Redmi K60, the option may be hidden in Settings β Additional β Special Features β Screen Protection. Also check the Security section, sometimes it appears in the Block UI subsection.
Check the version of MIUI in Settings β About the phone
Update the system to the latest stable firmware
Make sure you do not have activated the Child Mode.
Try restarting the device.-->
β οΈ Note: Some devices (e.g. Xiaomi Pad 6) may need to restart after the protection is turned off.
Method 2: Using Developer Mode and ADB
When standard settings don't work, USB debugging and ADB commands come to the rescue. This is universal for all Xiaomi devices, but requires a connection to a computer. Importantly, after you run the commands, the desktop protection will shut down forever until you reset or re-flash the device.
First, activate the developer mode:
- Go to Settings. β The phone.
- Click 7 times on MIUI until you become a developer!
- Go back to the main settings menu and open a new section for developers.
- Activate Debugging via USB and confirm the resolution.
Now connect your phone to your PC, install ADB Tools and execute the command:
adb shell settings put secure lock_to_app_enabled 0If this doesnβt work, try an alternative command for newer versions of MIUI:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.homeπ‘
After completion ADB-If the protection comes back, repeat the procedure and additionally perform adb shell pm clear com.miui.home to reset the launcher cache.
| Xiaomi model | Does it work? ADB-method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Yes. | You may need to disable MIUI Optimization in the developer settings |
| POCO X5 Pro | Yes. | Use global firmware |
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | Partially. | Chinese firmware requires unlocking the loader |
| Mi 11 Lite | Yes. | Checked out for MIUI 13.0.4 |
Method 3: Reset the launcher settings without data loss
If previous methods failed, you can return the launcher com.miui.home to factory settings, which does not affect user data, but resets the location of icons and widgets.
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- In the search box, enter a launcher or home.
- Select MIUI Launcher (or POCO Launcher for POCO devices).
- Click Warehouse β Clear the data and confirm the action.
After the launcher is reset, the desktop protection will automatically turn off, but all your personal screen settings (wallpaper, folders, widgets) will be deleted. This method is suitable if you are willing to sacrifice the current desktop organization to unlock it. To restore the layout, you can use backups through Settings β Additional β Backup, if they were created earlier.
What if the launcher reset didnβt help?
Method 4: Change the configuration file (for advanced)
This method requires root rights and is only suitable for users with an unlocked bootloader. It affects system files, so back up before you start. settings_global.xml, where the global settings are stored MIUI.
Instructions:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Solid Explorer or FX File Explorer).
- Go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/.
- Open the settings.db file in the text editor (you need a module to work with SQLite).
- Find the line with the parameter lock_to_app_enabled and change its meaning to 0.
- Save the changes, restart the device.
If you donβt have settings.db, try an alternative way: /data/system/users/0/, where the file should lie settings_global.xml. Look for a line in it:
<setting id="35" name="lock_to_app_enabled" value="1" />Replace value="1" with value="0".
β οΈ Warning: Incorrect editing of system files can lead to bootloop. If the phone doesn't turn on after rebooting, try resetting with Recovery Mode (press Power). + Volume Up when switched on).
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Many users face typical problems when trying to disable desktop protection, and here are the most common ones and ways to solve them:
- π Protection returns after reboot β This means that the system application com.miui.home overwrites settings. Solution: Use ADB-command adb shell pm disable-user com.miui.home, and then immediately disable and turn the launcher back on.
- π No item "Desktop Protection" in the settings β Check if it's hidden due to regional restrictions. Try changing the region to India in Settings. β Additionally. β Region β sometimes it opens up additional options.
- π± ADB can't see the device β Make sure that Xiaomi drivers are installed and debugging enabled USB. On Windows, the Mi program can help. PC Suite.
- π§ After the launcher was dropped, all the icons disappeared. β This is normal. Restart the device, and the system will restore the icons automatically through the 1-2 minute.
Another common mistake is to try to disable protection through Guest Mode or Second Space, which does not affect the main profile, so all changes will apply only to the guest session, and the same applies to Private Mode in MIUI 14, it does not affect the launcher system settings.

Alternative solutions: third-party launchers and firmware
If all of these methods fail, there are two options:
- Third-party launcher installation: Applications like Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher or Hyperion Launcher completely replace the standard MIUI interface and do not have built-in layout lock. Minus: some MIUI features (such as Super Wallpapers or Dynamic Effects) may not work properly.
- Projects like LineageOS, Pixel Experience or ArrowOS are free of MIUI restrictions but require unlocking the bootloader and losing warranty. Check your model support on the XDA Developers forum before you run the firmware.
Third-party launchers are installed as regular apps from Google Play, but they may require:
- π Assign the launcher by default in Settings β Annexes β By default.
- π§ Provide all permissions (especially Overlay over other applications).
- π Disable battery optimization for launcher in Settings β Battery β Optimizing the battery.
For custom firmware, the process is more complicated:
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool (can take up to 72 hours).
- Install TWRP Recovery for your model.
- Sweat the selected firmware, following the instructions on its official website.

Custom firmware removes all MIUI restrictions, but deprives you of official updates and can cause problems with the camera or sensors. Use them only if other methods have not worked.
