TalkBack on Xiaomi TVs is designed for people with visual impairments, which voices all the actions on the screen, from selecting menu items to changing the volume. However, many users accidentally activate this mode, after which the control of the TV becomes extremely uncomfortable: every click is accompanied by voice prompts, and navigation on the menu requires double taps. If you encounter this problem, our article will help to return the TV to normal mode.
Unlike smartphones, where disabling TalkBack takes a couple of clicks, on Xiaomi TVs (Mi series) TV 4/4S/4A/4X/5/5X/6/7/P1/Q1/Q2) This process may be complicated by the PatchWall or Google interface. TV. We've put together all the current methods, from standard shutdown through settings to radical methods like reset to factory settings, and we'll also figure out what to do if the remote doesn't respond to commands or the screen is completely black.
Why does TalkBack turn on on its own?
Most of the time, the voice function is activated by accident, so you just press the Menu or Settings button three times fast on the remote, and the TV goes into visually impaired mode, but there are other reasons:
- ๐ฎ Children or pets pressed the button combination on the remote (especially relevant for models with touchscreens Xiaomi Mi Remote).
- ๐ Resetting to factory settings has returned all features to default, including TalkBack.
- ๐ฅ Update firmware reset individual settings of special features.
- ๐ค A voice assistant (like Google Assistant) has executed a command by mistake (for example, if you said something similar to โturn on voiceover").
On some Xiaomi TV models (such as Mi TV Q1 75" or Redmi Smart TV X), the function can turn on after connecting wireless headphones or sound panels - the system interprets this as a request to activate voice acting.
Method 1: Disable TalkBack through the standard menu
If the TV responds to remote commands and the screen displays a picture, use this method. It works on all Xiaomi models with PatchWall firmware or Google TV (including Mi TV 5 Pro, Mi TV Q2, Redmi Smart TV A).
- Press the Settings button on the remote and hold it for 3 seconds until you hear the beep, which will turn off the double-press mode characteristic of TalkBack.
- Go to Settings โ Special Features โ TalkBack (or Accessibility โ TalkBack on English firmware).
- Move the slider to the off position (or press OK on the remote if a tick is used).
- Confirm the action by selecting Stop in the window that appears.
On some models (e.g. Mi TV 4S 55), the path may be different: Settings โ System โ Special Features โ Special Features Services โ TalkBack. If there is no TalkBack, look for Screen Reader or Voice Assistant.
โ๏ธ Preparing to shut down TalkBack
โ ๏ธ Warning: If after TalkBack shutdown, the TV restarts and the function is activated again, this is a sign of a firmware failure. In this case, only resetting the settings will help (see Method 4).
Method 2: Voice use (for firmware with Google Assistant)
On Xiaomi TVs with Google TV (such as Mi TV Q2 55" or Mi TV P1 65"), you can turn off TalkBack with your voice, even if the remote does not respond to taps.
- Say, โOK Google, turn off TalkBackโ or โHey Google, turn off TalkBack.โ
- If the voice assistant is not responding, check if the microphone on the remote is turned on (button with the microphone icon).
- For models without Google Assistant (such as Redmi Smart TV X55), try the command: "Disable voiceover".
If voice commands donโt work, the reasons may be as follows:
- ๐ Microphone on the remote is turned off in settings (Settings) โ Remote and accessories โ Microphone).
- ๐ No Internet connection (voice assistant requires network to handle commands).
- ๐ The volume level of the TV is set to a minimum (the assistant does not hear the command).
๐ก
If voice commands are not recognized, try to speak more slowly and clearly, pause between words, and also make sure that the room is free of extraneous noises (fan running, air conditioning).
Method 3: Disconnect via ADB (for advanced users)
If standard methods fail and the TV is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer, you can turn off TalkBack via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is suitable for all Android TV models, including the Mi TV 5X and Redmi Smart TV X65.
You'll need:
- ๐ป Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux.
- ๐ USB-cable (for some models) or Wi-Fi connection.
- ๐ฆ Utility. ADB Tools.
Instructions:
- Turn on the TV debugging mode via USB: Settings โ About TV โ Build number (click 7 times in a row until the message "You became a developer").
- Return to Settings โ For developers and activate USB Debugging and Network Debugging.
- Connect your computer and TV to the same Wi-Fi network and remember IP-TV address (can be seen in Settings) โ Network).
- Open the command line on your PC and type: adb connect [IP-TV address]:5555 adb shell settings put secure enabled_accessibility_services com.google.android.marvin.talkback/com.google.android.marvin.talkback.TalkBackService:com.google.android.tts Then, turn off the command: adb shell settings put secure accessibility_enabled 0
โ ๏ธ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB If you're not sure what you're doing, skip this method and move on to resetting.
What to do if ADB is not connected?
Method 4: Resetting settings to factory
If none of the previous methods worked, the radical solution is factory reset, which will delete all installed apps, accounts and personal data, but return the TV to its original state, where TalkBack is disabled by default.
Instructions for Xiaomi TV:
- Click on the Settings remote โ All settings โ Device โ Reset settings.
- Select Delete all data and confirm the action (entry may be required) PIN-code, if it has been installed).
- Wait for the reboot (it will take 3-5 minutes) and after the turn on, the TV will prompt you to go through the initial setup.
On models with Google TV (e.g. Mi TV Q2), the path is different: Settings โ System โ Reset โ Erase all data.
| Model TV set | The way to dump | Time to reset | Is PIN required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi TV 4/4S/4A | Settings โ Device โ Reset | 3-4 minutes | No. |
| Mi TV 5/5X/5 Pro | Settings โ All settings โ Device โ Reset | 4-5 minutes | Yes (if installed) |
| Redmi Smart TV X/A | Settings โ System โ Reset | 2-3 minutes | No. |
| Mi TV Q1/Q2/P1 | Settings โ System โ Reset โ Erase all data | 5-7 minutes | Yes. |
Once reset, the TV will automatically update the firmware to the latest version โ it can take up to 20 minutes.
Method 5: Hardware shutdown (if the TV is unresponsive)
As a last resort, when the TV is completely locked (it does not respond to the remote, voice commands and ADB), you can try a hardware reset. This method works on all Xiaomi models, but requires physical access to the buttons on the case.
Instructions:
- Turn off the TV (remove the cord from the socket).
- Press and hold the Power button on the TV body (usually located on the side or bottom).
- Without releasing Power, plug the power cord back in.
- Hold the button for another 10-15 seconds until the Xiaomi logo or recovery menu appears.
- In the recovery menu, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset (use volume buttons for navigation and Power buttons for confirmation).
โ ๏ธ Note: On some models (e.g. Mi) TV 6) a hardware reset may cause the bootloader to be blocked. If the TV does not turn on after the procedure, contact the service center.
๐ก
Hardware reset is the last chance to bring the TV back to life if the software methods didn't work. Use it only as a last resort, as it voids the warranty on some models.
How to Prevent TalkBack Inadvertently Included in the Future
