Why your smartphone is booting in Safe Mode and what it means
Safe Mode on Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is an Android diagnostic mode that starts automatically when system failures or application conflicts are detected. In this state, the device blocks all third-party programs, leaving only basic functions active. MIUI. Most often, users encounter it after an unsuccessful update, installation of questionable APK-Files or hardware failures (such as phone crashes).
Key features of Safe Mode activation on Redmi Note 8 Pro: In the lower left corner of the screen, the words "Safe Mode" (or "Safe Mode" in English firmware) are displayed, and all installed applications become gray and inaccessible. The functionality of the phone is limited to calls, SMS and standard utilities like Camera or Contact. It is important to understand that this is not a virus or a malfunction - the system thus protects itself from further damage.
On the Redmi Note 8 Pro (MTK Helio G90T model), the safe mode can be turned on for the following reasons:
- 🔄 Incorrect update MIUI — interrupted firmware or unofficial version installation.
- 📱 Application conflict – especially after installing modified applications APK or programs from unknown sources.
- 🔋 Hardware failures – damage to the power button or battery (for example, after a fall).
- 🛠️ Manual switching on – accidentally pressing the combination of buttons when rebooting.
Before you try to turn off the mode, check if it is associated with physical damage. If the phone falls or gets wet, it is better to first diagnose the hardware.
Method 1: Standard Reboot is the easiest method
60 percent of the time, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is a regular reboot, and this method works if the mode was activated due to a temporary system failure or accidental button pressing.
- Hold the power button on the right side of the phone until the turn off menu appears.
- In the window that appears, select “Reboot” (or “Restart”).
- Wait for the device to turn off completely and automatically (usually 30-60 seconds).
If the Safe Mode message is gone after the reboot, the problem is solved. If not, move to the next method. Note: some MIUI 12-14 firmware may require a double reboot (repeat the procedure again).
💡
If the power button doesn’t respond, try holding it together with the volume button for 10 seconds – this will force the phone to restart.
⚠️ Warning: Don't remove the battery for forced reboot! on the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the battery is non-removable and rough interference can damage the plumes.
Method 2: Forced shutdown via buttons (Hard Reset)
If the standard reboot didn't work, try a hardware reset using a combination of buttons. This method simulates battery extraction (which is impossible to do physically) and resets the temporary system data.
- Turn off the phone by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds.
- After completely switching off (screen is out, vibration is absent) simultaneously press: 🔘 Power button (Power) 🔊 The Volume Up button (Volume Up)
10-20 seconds
Redmi
Release the buttons and wait for the system to load.
This works 80 percent of the time if Safe Mode is caused by a software failure, and if the phone boots back up in Safe Mode after the procedure, the problem is deeper, perhaps the firmware or hardware is damaged.
What to do if your phone doesn’t respond to the buttons?
| Method | Success | Implementation time | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard reset. | 60% | 1 minute | No. |
| Hardware reset (buttons) | 80% | 2-3 minutes | Loss of unsaved data |
| Removal of conflict applications | 90% | 5-10 minutes | Removal of required programmes |
| Reset to factory settings | 95% | 15-20 minutes. | Loss of all data |
Method 3: Remove problematic applications (if the culprit is known)
If Safe Mode is activated after a specific application (e.g. a modified Google Play Services or pirated game) is installed, it must be removed. In Safe Mode, third-party programs are blocked, but the MIUI system tools remain available.
- Open “Settings” → “Applications” → “Application Management”.
- In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) Select “Show system processes».
- Find a suspicious app on the list (usually the last one installed).
- Click "Delete" → "OK." If the button is inactive, select "Disable."
☑️ Check before removing applications
On the Redmi Note 8 Pro with MIUI 13+ firmware, some system applications (such as Mi Video or Mi Music) cannot be removed in the standard way – this will require ADB or root access.
Method 4: Reset to factory settings (last chance)
If previous methods fail, a full reset remains, which will remove all data from the phone, including photos, contacts and installed programs, but return the system to its original state, recommended only in case of critical failures.
How to reset the Redmi Note 8 Pro:
- Turn off the phone.
- Hold it together: 🔘 Power button 🔊 Volume up button
Recovery Mode
Mi Bunny
Use volume buttons for navigation and power button for selection.
«Wipe Data»
«Wipe All Data»
«Confirm»
«Reboot»
«Reboot to System»
⚠️ Note: On some versions MIUI Recovery menu items may be called differently (e.g., Clear Data instead of Wipe Data). If you are not sure, do not confirm the action to avoid random formatting.
Once reset, the phone will boot as new. You will need to reconfigure your Mi Account, connect to Wi-Fi, and recover data from the backup (if it was created).
💡
Reset to factory settings deletes all data, including the associated Mi Account. If you forgot the password from the Xiaomi account, after resetting the phone may lock (unlocking through the service center is required).
Method 5: Checking for hardware faults
If safe mode appears after each turn on, even after a reset, the problem may lie in the hardware. On the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the most common fault is:
- 🔋 Faulty power button – if it is stuck or damaged, the system may mistakenly recognize the press as a command to log into Safe Mode.
- 🔌 Battery problems – a bloated or worn-out battery can cause short circuits leading to failures.
- 📱 Damage to the motherboard - after falling or getting moisture.
How to check for hardware faults:
- Light a flashlight on the power button – if it is drowned or dirt is visible under it, cleaning or replacement is required.
- Try to press the volume button when you turn on, and if the phone is loading normally, the power button is the problem.
- Connect your phone to charge and check if the battery is swelling (if the case is deformed, don’t use the device!).
If you suspect a hardware breakdown, don’t try to disassemble the phone yourself – the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a fragile design with thin plumes.
Prevention: How to Avoid Re-enabled Safe Mode
To prevent Safe Mode from appearing on your Redmi Note 8 Pro, follow these guidelines:
- 📥 Install apps only from official sources, such as Google Play or Mi App Store. APK from torrents and unknown sites.
- 🔄 Update regularly MIUI — Check for updates in Settings → The phone. → Updating the system.
- 🛡️ Do not use software to modify system files without root rights (e.g. Lucky Patcher or Freedom).
- 🔋 Keep an eye on battery status – if the phone is quickly discharged or overheating, replace the battery.
- 🔧 Avoid mechanical damage – use a cover and protective glass.
It is also useful to periodically clean the cache of the system:
- Go to Settings → Memory → Cleanup.
- Click "Clear the cache."
- Reboot the phone.
If you experience Safe Mode frequently, keep a log of events: write down what actions it appears after, which will help identify patterns and prevent problems in the future.
