The appearance of the words โSafe Modeโ or โSafe Modeโ in the corner of the screen of a Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone often causes panic among inexperienced users. Many mistakenly believe that the device is broken or has undergone a virus attack requiring complex repairs.
In this state, the system only loads the basic components, blocking all third-party applications that you installed from the store or other sources, which allows you to determine whether a particular application is to blame for unstable work of the gadget, for example, for constant reboots or interface freezes.
If your phone is stuck in this mode and doesn't want to return to normal, there are several effective ways to solve the problem: turn off safe mode, both by simple methods like rebooting, and more advanced if standard actions do not help. In this article, we will discuss all the options for exiting the diagnostic mode in detail.
What is Safe Mode and Why It Is Enabled
Safe Mode is a special diagnostic tool built into the operating system kernel, and when you're in it, MIUI or HyperOS is minimalist, all user data, contacts and media files are in place, but any programs you install (social media, games, launchers) are no longer available.
The main reason for the forced activation of such mode is a software conflict: if after installing a new game or utility, the phone begins to behave inadequately, the system or the user himself can activate this mode to isolate the problem.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Staying in safe mode is not dangerous to the phoneโs hardware, but limits its functionality. However, if the system loads into this mode cyclically every time it is turned on, it signals a serious software failure.
Sometimes it is caused by damage to system files or a failed firmware update, and in rare cases, this is the result of a failure of volume buttons that physically stuck in the on position, sending a false signal to the system that the user wants to enter debugging mode.
The easiest way: a normal reboot
In the vast majority of cases, to get out of safe mode on Xiaomi Redmi, it is enough to perform a normal device reboot.The Android system is designed so that safe mode is not maintained after the power is turned off if it was activated temporarily.
To do this, press the side button on and hold it for a few seconds until the menu appears on the screen. Select "Switch off" or "Reset." If the touch screen reacts poorly, just hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the vibration and the Mi logo appears.
โ๏ธ The correct reboot to exit Safe Mode
It's critical that you don't touch the volume buttons at this point, so if you press the volume button right after the logo appears, the phone goes back to the diagnostics, and let the device boot safely to the desktop.
๐ก
If the phone is turned off but writes Safe Mode again when turned on, try pressing and releasing the volume button several times before booting to make sure it is not physically stuck.
Using a button combination to exit
If a simple reboot doesnโt work and the phone boots back with โSafe Mode,โ youโll need to use a button combination method, which often works on older versions of MIUI and some Redmi Note models.
Turn off the smartphone completely. Then press and hold the power button. Once the brand logo appears, release the power button and quickly press the Volume Up button. Hold it until the system is fully loaded.
In some cases, the algorithm can be reversed: you need to press the Volume Down button when the logo appears, and experimentally check which combination will unlock the normal start on your particular model.
| Model of the device | Action on the logo | The result |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 8/9 | Click Volume Up | Normal booting. |
| Xiaomi Mi 9/10 | No action. | Automatic exit |
| Redmi 9A/10A | Click Volume Down | Resetting the regime |
| Poco X3/NFC | Double-push | Rebuilding the system |
Disconnection through notification settings
Some firmware versions, especially older Android builds, have a notification that the phone is running in safe mode, which can hang in the notification curtain immediately after booting.
Lower the top notification bar. If you see a message saying "Safe Mode is on" or something like that, click on it. The system will ask for confirmation to turn off this mode. Accept the action, and the phone will reboot itself in its normal state.
If you don't have that notification, it doesn't mean it won't work in the future. Check the notification bar periodically after each reboot attempt, as the system notification logic has been changed in HyperOS.
Why are app icons missing?
Removal of conflict applications
If the phone persists in returning to safe mode after each reboot, then some installed application is causing a critical conflict, and the user's task is to find and remove the culprit.
Even in Safe Mode, you can get into settings. Go to Settings โ Apps โ All apps. Carefully review the list of recently installed programs. If you remember that the problem started after installing a certain software, delete it.
Often the culprits are:
- ๐ฑ Questionable launchers and design themes;
- ๐ฎ Modified versions of games;
- ๐ก๏ธ Aggressive antiviruses or memory cleaners;
- ๐น Applications for recording screen with deep access rights.
Once you remove the suspicious software, reboot it completely, and if the system boots normally, the problem has been resolved, and if not, continue removing the apps one at a time until you find the source of the failure.
Resetting settings via Recovery Mode
When software methods donโt work, you have to resort to more radical measures: Resetting through the Recovery Mode menu is guaranteed to take the phone out of the Safe Mode cycle, but delete all user data if a backup was not made.
To enter recovery mode, turn off your phone. Press both the power button and the volume button. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then release the power, but keep the volume down until the Recovery menu appears.
Wipe Data โ Wipe All Data โ Confirm โ RebootUse the volume buttons to navigate up and down, and the power button to confirm the choice. Once reset, the phone will be as new, and the safe mode will definitely disappear as the factory configuration returns.
โ ๏ธ Note: Before you run Wipe Data, make sure you remember the password from your Mi Account and Google account. After the reset, the system will require them to confirm ownership of the device (protection) FRP).
๐ก
A full reset via Recovery is a last resort, and only use it if the removal of applications and a normal reboot fail.
Checking physical buttons and hardware problems
If the Volume Down button is closed or contaminated, it can constantly send a signal to the system at start, making it think that the user wants to log in to Safe Mode.
Try to gently, without fanaticism, press the volume buttons several times to stir up the mechanism. You can use compressed air to clean the area around the buttons. If the phone has moisture protection, make sure that the connectors are free of oxidation.
In the case of software methods are powerless and the buttons are probeed normally, there may be a problem with the plume or motherboard, in which case only diagnostics in the service center, where they will check the voltage on the button contacts, will help.
