Changing your account on Xiaomi Redmi 9 is a procedure that every user faces when selling a device, transferring it to relatives or after buying a used phone. Unlike other Android devices, Xiaomi phones are tied to the Mi Account ecosystem, which adds to the complexity: without properly deleting the old profile, the new owner may face blocking functions or requiring a password from the previous account.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to change your account on Redmi 9 (including Redmi 9A, 9C, 9T models), taking into account the features of the MIUI 12/13/14 firmware.
- 🔄 Delete your old Mi Account without losing data
- 🔐 Reset password if you forget your old account details
- 📱 Add a new account (Google, Mi, or local)
- ⚠️ Bypass lock after resetting (if the phone requires an old account)
We will pay special attention to the hidden MIUI settings that allow you to change your account without a hard reset – this will save your files, photos and installed applications. If the phone is already blocked, at the end of the article you will find instructions for unlocking through Fastboot and official Xiaomi services.
1.Preparation for changing the account: what to do before deleting
Before you delete your old account, make sure you don't lose important data. The Xiaomi ecosystem syncs:
- 📁 Contacts and notes (if sync with Mi Cloud enabled)
- 📅 Calendar and reminders
- 📸 Photos (if Mi Cloud Gallery is used)
- 🎮 Game data (e.g., saves to Mi Game Center)
If you don't plan to save this data, skip this step.
- Open the Settings. → Mi Account → Mi Cloud.
- Check what data is synchronized (green switch = enabled).
- Click on each item (such as Contacts) and select Sync Now.
- Copy important files to your computer or external drive.
⚠️ Warning: After deleting your account, all unsynchronized data (such as SMS or local notes) will be deleted without recovery. If the phone was purchased from your hands, ask the previous owner to unplug the device from your Mi Account via account.xiaomi.com, which will save you from being blocked after the reset.

2 How to delete Mi Account on Xiaomi Redmi 9
If you own a phone and remember your account password, you can delete it right in the settings. This method works on Redmi 9 with any version of MIUI (including global and Chinese firmware).
Method 1: Through phone settings
- Open Settings → Accounts and Synchronization.
- Select Mi Account (the icon with the Xiaomi logo).
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select “Delete Account”.
- Enter the password from the account and confirm the deletion.
If there is no “Delete Account” item, it means:
- 🔒 The phone has a child mode or restrictions (check in Settings → Special features).
- 📱 The device is bound to corporate policy (e.g., if the phone was issued by the company).
- 🔄 The phone is not connected to the internet (required to confirm deletion).
Method 2: Through Xiaomi website (if your phone is blocked)
If you are selling a phone and want to remotely untie it from your account:
- Go to account.xiaomi.com and log in.
- In the Devices section, find your Redmi 9 (by model or IMEI).
- Click “Delete Device” and confirm the action.
⚠️ Warning: Once the device is removed through the website, it will automatically unlock, but all data on it will be saved. To clean it completely, reset (Settings → About Phone → Reset).

3. Adding a new account (Mi, Google or local)
After deleting your old account, you can add a new one. Redmi 9 supports three types of profiles:
| Type of account | Advantages | Deficiencies | How do I add? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Account | Synchronization with Mi Cloud, access to branded services (Mi Home, Mi Fit), unlock the bootloader | Link to Xiaomi ecosystem, possible blockages during reset | Settings → Accounts → Add an account → Mi |
| Google Account | Sync with Gmail, YouTube, Play Market, Backup | Some MIUI features require Mi Account (e.g. themes) | Settings → Accounts → Add an account → Google |
| Local account | No Internet connection, no connection to services | No data synchronization, limited functionality | It is automatically created when the phone is turned on for the first time. |
To add Mi Account:
- Go to Settings → Accounts and Sync → Add an account.
- Select "Mi" and follow the instructions on the screen.
- If you do not have an account, click “Create an account” and fill in the data.
- Confirm your phone number or email (required to restore your password!).
For Google Account:
- In the same section, select “Google”.
- Enter your Gmail account or create a new account.
- Set up synchronization (contacts, calendar, backups).
💡
If you add Mi Account and you see a “Server Unavailable” error, try changing the region in your phone settings to “India” or “Russia” (Settings → Additional → Region).
4 Hard Reset – if the phone requires an old account
If you bought a Redmi 9 with your hands and can’t delete someone else’s Mi Account (the phone asks for a password after reset), you’ll have to do a hard reset via Recovery Mode, which deletes all data, including account locking, but doesn’t work on all firmware.
Note: on new versions of MIUI 13/14, resetting via Recovery may not remove the Mi Account binding, in which case you will need to unlock via Fastboot (see section 5).
Instructions for resetting via Recovery:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Volume Up + Power buttons at the same time and hold for 10-15 seconds until the Mi logo appears.
- Release the buttons – you will be taken to the Recovery Mode menu (manage by the volume and power buttons).
- Select the "Wipe Data" option.
- Confirm the reset by selecting “Wipe All Data”.
- Once completed, select “Reboot” to reboot.
If after resetting the phone still requires entering a password from the old account, then:
- 🔐 The Find Device function is activated on the device.
- 📱 The phone is bound to corporate policy (e.g. MDM).
- 🔄 The firmware of the phone is modified (e.g. custom MIUI EU installed).
💡
Hard reset via Recovery only removes the Mi Account lock on firmware older than MIUI 12.5. Newer versions require unlocking via Fastboot or the official Xiaomi service.
5 Unlock Mi Account via Fastboot (for power users)
If Recovery resets don't work, you'll have to use Fastboot, a firmware mode that allows you to remove your account binding bypassing the system, which requires a computer and basic ADB knowledge.
You'll need:
- 🖥️ Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS.
- 🔌 Cable USB (preferably original).
- 📥 Platform Tools (from Google).
- 🔑 Unlock file for Redmi 9 (can be found on the XDA Developers or 4PDA forums).
Step-by-step:
- Download and unpack Platform Tools into a folder on your computer.
- Turn off the phone and press Volume Down + Power to log into Fastboot Mode.
- Connect your phone to your computer via USB.

- Enter the command to check the connection: fastboot devices If the phone is determined (its serial number will appear), continue.
- Download the unlock file (e.g., unlock_mi9.zip) and place it in the folder with Platform Tools.
- Enter the command to unlock: fastboot flash unlock unlock_mi9.zip
- Once completed, type: fastboot reboot Phone will reboot without binding to Mi Account.
⚠️ Warning: Using unofficial unlock files can result in IMEI or a phone building being blocked. If you are unsure of your actions, contact Xiaomi Service Center with your phone documents.
6. Solving common errors when changing an account
When working with Redmi 9 accounts, users often face typical problems, and let’s look at the most common and ways to solve them.

- Reboot your phone and log in again.
7 How to Protect Your Account After a Shift

- 📧 Confirm email and phone to restore access.
- 🔄 Enable two-factor authentication in your account settings.
- 📱 Regularly update your firmware (newer versions MIUI fix vulnerabilities).
- 🚫 Don’t give your password to even trusted people – use the Temporary Access feature in Mi Cloud.
