The Fastboot mode on Xiaomi smartphones is an engineering tool for firmware, bootloader unlocking and diagnostics, but when the device hangs on a black screen with the word "FASTBOOT" and a rabbit in a hat, it turns into a headache. The reasons for getting into this mode are different: from accidentally pressing buttons to crashing firmware, the main thing is not to panic: in 95% of cases, the problem is solved without going to the service center.
This article will help you log out of Fastboot on any Xiaomi device (including Redmi, Poco, Mi), regardless of the reason for the lock. We will discuss both soft (without loss of data) and hard (with a complete reset), and explain why some βpeopleβsβ advice from the Internet can only make things worse. MIUI 12-14 and Android-based devices 10-14.
Why Xiaomi is stuck in Fastboot: 7 main reasons
Before you start "resuscitation", it is important to understand what triggered the download in Fastboot, and the choice of the solution depends on this:
- π Update failure MIUI β interrupted firmware "over the air" or through Recovery often leads to a load cycle in Fastboot.
- π§ Unlocking the bootloader β if the process was interrupted or an outdated version of the Mi Unlock Tool was used.
- π± Hardware button failure β sticking the Volume Down or Power key can simulate a Fastboot login command.
- π Critical battery discharge β if the battery is discharged to 0% while working with system files.
- π οΈ Incompatible firmware β installing custom Recovery (for example, TWRP) or firmware for another model.
- π₯ Boot partition damage β due to viruses, βcurvedβ root rights or errors in modifying the system.
- π Problems with cable/port USB β If the device was connected to the PC during the failure.
Note that if you tried to get root rights before the problem or installed Magisk, the probability of a software failure is 99%, in which case a soft exit from Fastboot is unlikely - you will need to reflash.
Method 1: Soft reboot (without data loss)
The safest method, which works in 60% of cases, is suitable if:
- π± The device responds to the pressing of buttons (vibrates, changes the screen).
- π The problem occurred after a routine update or accidental pressing.
- π΄ There are no errors on the screen such as Invalid boot image or Critical partition corrupted.
Instructions:
- Hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- If the device doesnβt respond, try the Power + Volume Up combination (hold 20 seconds).
- After turning off, wait 30 seconds and turn on your smartphone in the usual way (Power button).
If the phone is then loaded back into Fastboot, move on to the next method.Do not repeat a soft reboot more than 3 times - this can damage the file system.
π‘
If your smartphone vibrates when holding the buttons, but the screen does not go out, try connecting it to charge for 10 minutes.
Method 2: Exiting through Recovery Mode (with data storage)
If a soft reboot doesnβt work, the next step is to use the standard Recovery Mode, which works even when the system files are damaged if the kernel is not affected.
Instructions for Xiaomi:
- Turn off the device (hold the power until vibration).
- Press Power + Volume Up and hold until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select Reboot β Reboot to System (use volume buttons for navigation, Power for confirmation).
If you see a No command error or a menu in Chinese:
- πΉ Press Power. + Volume Up for 3 seconds β it will reset the language menu to English.
- πΉ If the items are inactive, then the recovery section is damaged - you will need to flash the flashing.
Turn off the phone (hold power 15+ seconds)
Connect to charging (if battery < 20%)
Use the original USB cable
Do not interrupt the selection process of menu items-->
Method 3: Fastboot commands (for advanced users)
If the previous methods didnβt work, youβll have to connect to your PC and use ADB/Fastboot, a method that requires drivers installed and minimal command line knowledge.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS.
- π The original cable. USB (better-out-of-pack).
- π₯ Google Platform Tools (Download and Unpack).
- π§ Xiaomi Drivers (set automatically when you first connect).
Step-by-step:
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode to your PC.
- Open the command line in the folder with the platform-tools:
- If the device is determined (the serial number appears), enter:
- If the team doesnβt work, try:
If the phone returns to Fastboot after these commands, the problem is deeper, the bootloader or system partitions are damaged, in which case only complete flashing (see Method 5) will help.
What if the PC doesnβt see the device in Fastboot?
Method 4: Reset to factory settings (Hard Reset)
An extreme measure if you want to keep your device running, but you're willing to sacrifice data. Attention: this way will delete all files, photos, apps and settings!
How to do Hard Reset with Recovery:
- Go to Recovery Mode (see Method 2).
- Select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data (or Factory Reset)
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion (5-10 minutes).
- Reboot your device with Reboot β Reboot to System.
If the phone is still loaded into the Fastboot after the reset, it means the problem is at the bootloader level or hardware, in which case only flashing through the Mi Flash Tool will help.
β οΈ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro, Poco) X3 Pro) Recovery reset can block the bootloader if it has previously been unlocked OEM Unlock. In this case, you will need to re-unlock through the Mi Unlock Tool.
Method 5: Flashing through the Mi Flash Tool (100% solution)
If all the previous methods failed, the only option left is to completely reflash the device, which is guaranteed to fix the problem, but requires:
- π₯οΈ Windows PC (7/10/11).
- π₯ Official firmware for your model (download from Xiaomi website).
- π§ Mi Flash Tool Programming.
- π Unlocked boot loader (if previously blocked).
Step-by-step:
- Download and unpack the firmware (.tgz β.tar files).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and drivers.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode to your PC.
- In the program, select the firmware folder and press Refresh.
- Choose the firmware method: πΉ Clean All β Complete cleaning (recommended). πΉ Clean All and Lock - Cleaning Up + Loader lock (if you need to return the warranty).
Flash
Once the firmware is in place, the device will turn on as new, and if that doesn't work, it's a hardware problem (a memory chip or motherboard is damaged).
| Xiaomi model | Recommended method | Implementation time | Data retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Method 1 or 2 | 2-5 minutes | Yes. |
| Poco F3/F4 | Method 3 (Fastboot commands) | 5-10 minutes | Yes. |
| Mi 11/12 Series | Method 5 (Mi Flash) | 10-15 minutes. | No. |
| Redmi 9A/9C | Method 4 (Hard Reset) | 5 minutes. | No. |
π‘
Flashing through the Mi Flash Tool is the only method that is guaranteed to eliminate the freeze in the Fastboot, even if the system partitions or bootloader are damaged.
What to do if Xiaomi is stuck in Fastboot
There are many "advice" on the Internet that not only do not help, but make things worse, and this is strictly forbidden:
- π« Remove the battery (on non-removable batteries this will lead to damage to the plume).
- π« Use unofficial firmware (for example, with 4PDA) non-compatibility-check.
- π« Interrupt the firmware process - this can "brick" the device permanently.
- π« Holding buttons longer than 30 seconds can burn the power controller.
- π« Connect to non-original memory during manipulations - voltage surges kill the motherboard.
Also, you shouldn't believe advice like "heat your phone with a hairdryer" or "knock on the body," which has no basis and can lead to permanent damage.
β οΈ Note: If your device was purchased by hand and already had an unlocked bootloader, flashing through Mi Flash may result in the Mi Account being blocked.
