Owners of the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 smartphone sooner or later face the need to completely clean the device, which can be caused by selling the gadget, critical errors in the operating system, or the desire to get rid of accumulated “digital garbage”, Formatting is a radical, but often the only sure way to return the device to factory speed and stability.
The process of a complete data reset, known as Hard Reset, deletes all user information, including contacts, photos, apps and settings. It is important to understand that it will not be possible to recover data after the procedure is completed without a prior backup, so the issue must be approached with the utmost responsibility and attention to detail.
There are several methods for doing this: standard through the settings menu, extended through the Recovery engineering menu, and deep flashing through Fastboot mode. The choice of the specific method depends on the current state of your Redmi Note 7: whether it turns on, whether the screen responds to touches, and whether you know the unlock password.
Before you start active, make sure that the battery charge is at least 60%. interruption of the process of writing system files due to battery discharge can lead to irreversible consequences, turning the smartphone into a “brick”. SIM-map to eliminate the risk of accidental formatting or file system damage.
Preparing the device for a complete data reset
The first and most critical step is to prepare, and many users ignore the account binding, which, after a reset, leads to a device being locked by Google FRP or Mi Account. If the phone was linked to an account, the system will require you to enter a password from it immediately after you turn it on. Make sure you remember the login details or delete the accounts in advance.
To delete your Mi Account, go to the settings, find the "Mi Account" section, and click "Get Out." Similar steps must be taken for your Google account under "Accounts and Sync." Ignoring this step will make the phone useless to an outsider, but you will be denied access without a password.
⚠️ Note: If you have forgotten your Mi Account password, restore it through i.mi.com before resetting. Once formatted, it will be extremely difficult or impossible to restore access without a password using legal methods.
The next step is to back up, and the MIUI shell has a built-in tool for that, which allows you to save folder structure, messages, call logs and settings, and to save heavy files like photos and videos, you better use cloud services or transfer them to your computer.
☑️ Checklist before formatting
Method 1: Reset via MIUI (Soft Reset) settings
The safest and easiest way for every user to use is to use the standard functionality of the system, which is ideal if the phone is stable, the screen responds to commands, and you know the pattern lock or pin code, and it ensures that all system processes are completed correctly before cleaning.
To start, open the Settings menu and scroll down to About. Here we're interested in the Settings Reset tab. When you click on it, you'll see the "Erase All Data" (or "Reset Settings") button, and the system will warn you that all files will be deleted.
Once confirmed, the preparation process will begin, which can take a few minutes, the device will restart, and the memory partitions will be formatted directly, at which time the Xiaomi logo or animation of the Android robot can be displayed on the screen. Do not touch the control buttons at this point.
💡
Before resetting through the settings, turn on the “Do not turn off” mode in the “Battery and Performance” section so that the system does not fall asleep at the most inopportune moment of the process.
It's important to note the difference between Reset and Erase All Data. The first option will only return the system settings to factory settings by saving your files. The second option, which we need, completely clears internal memory. Be careful when choosing.
| Parameter | Resetting settings | Erasure of all data |
|---|---|---|
| Photo/video preservation | Yes. | No. |
| Preservation of applications | No. | No. |
| Saving accounts | Yes. | No (re-entry required) |
| Implementation time | 1-2 minutes | 5-10 minutes |
Method 2: Recovery Mode (Hard Reset)
If your smartphone doesn’t boot to your desktop, freezes on your logo, or you forget your screen lock password, you’ll need to use Recovery Mode, a special diagnostic mode built into the device’s memory that allows you to control the system at a low level.
To enter this mode on the Redmi Note 7 turned off, you need to press the volume button ("Loudness +") and the power button at the same time. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then release the power button, but continue to hold "Loudness +" until the Main Menu menu appears.
Navigation in this menu is done with volume buttons (up/down), and the choice of item is confirmed by the power button. You need to find the Wipe Data item and select it. Then the system will suggest you select Wipe All Data. Confirm the action by selecting Confirm.
What to do if the Recovery menu is in Chinese?
After the cleaning process is completed, which takes about 10 seconds, the system will return you to the main menu.Select Reboot, then Reboot to System. The first turn on after the reset will last longer than usual, sometimes up to 5-7 minutes, as the system creates new configuration files.
Method 3: Deep Cleaning through Fastboot and PC
This method is designed for advanced users and is required in cases where standard methods do not help, or the device is "bricked" software, USB-cable and utility Mi Flash Tool or the command fastboot.
First, the phone is put into Fastboot mode, and then you're going to have the volume button ("Loudness -") and the power button on the device shut off, and you're going to have a picture of a rabbit fixing a robot that says, "FASTBOOT." Connect your smartphone to your PC.
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase cacheEntering these commands in the command line (pre-installing ADB and Fastboot drivers) will completely clear the user data and cache sections. This is a deeper formatting level than Recovery. However, using the fastboot oem unlock command may be required to unlock the bootloader, which is officially allowed by Xiaomi only after waiting 168 hours (7 days).
⚠️ Note: Using Fastboot commands without an unlocked bootloader can cause an error and inability to boot the system.
An alternative to manually typing commands is to use Mi Flash with the option “Clean all” selected, which will install a clean version of the firmware by deleting all data, a method often used when switching from a global firmware version to a Chinese one or vice versa.
Fixing the problem: FRP and Mi Account lock
After formatting the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, the security mechanism is triggered, and if a Google account was entered on the phone before the reset, the system will require you to enter a password from it when you initially set it up, this is Factory Reset Protection (FRP).
So Mi Cloud protection works, too, and if Find Device is activated, the phone will require authorization from the Mi Account, and without that, you can't use the device, and it's not a bug, it's a security feature that you can't get around with simple formatting.
In the case of a forgotten Google password, try to restore access through a computer or other device via the account link. Mi Account passwords are more difficult - if recovery through the site does not help, you will have to contact official Xiaomi support with a check to purchase the device for proof of ownership.
- 🛡️ FRP Lock – Google protection requiring an account that was synced before reset.
- 🔒 Mi Account Lock – Xiaomi protection tied to the serial number of the device (IMEI).
- 📄 Proof of Purchase – check or warranty card required to remove the lock through the service center.
Initial configuration after formatting
When the cleaning process is complete and the phone is on, you'll see a welcome screen. Select a language and connect to the Wi-Fi network. The system will immediately check for updates. It's recommended to agree to install to get fresh security patches.
Then you sign in. Enter the same Google account you used before if you want to restore contacts and apps from backup. If you copied data through Mi Cloud, log in to your Mi Account to restore it.
💡
The first turn on after a reset can take up to 10 minutes - that's fine. The system optimizes apps and creates caches, so don't rush to reboot the phone if it's "thinking" longer than usual.
Remember to reconfigure the biometric protection: fingerprint and facial recognition. In Redmi Note 7, the fingerprint scanner is located on the back, it's fast and accurate enough. Also check the date and time settings, although they usually pull up automatically from the network.
