When a forced reset is required and how dangerous it is
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO are known for stability, but even they sometimes hang tight: they donβt respond to touch, donβt turn off the power button or reboot cyclically. 80% of the time, the problem is solved by a forced reboot β a hardware reset that interrupts all processes. However, this method has nuances: it can lead to the loss of unsaved data in open applications or, in rare cases, damage to the file system if the reboot occurred while writing data to the drive.
Most often, an emergency rebate is required in situations:
- π± The screen does not respond to touch, but the backlight is on
- π The phone is cyclically rebooted (stuck on the logo) MIUI)
- π The device does not turn on after the battery is discharged
- π€ The system βhangsβ after updating or installing the application
It is important to understand the difference between soft and hard reboots: the first one tries to complete the processes correctly, the second one immediately resets the power, which can be risky for iron. 4K-A hard rebuke can damage the file, in such cases it is better to wait for the battery to discharge (if time allows).
Method 1: Classic Forced Reboot (for all models)
The most versatile method, running on 99% of Xiaomi devices, including the old Redmi 4X and the new Xiaomi 14 Pro. It does not require additional tools, only the device itself.
- Press the Power button and hold it for 10-15 seconds.
- If the screen is gone, but the phone is not restarted, release the button and try again.
- On some models (e.g. POCO F5), you may need to press Power + Volume at the same time.
Signs of a successful reboot:
- π The logo appears MI or POCO
- π± The screen goes out, then switches on again.
- π Vibrates the device (on models with tactile recoil)
Remember which apps were opened | Make sure your phone isn't connected to charging | Try waiting 1-2 minutes (sometimes the system hangs off itself) | If the phone is warming, let it cool before the reboot.
-->
Exceptions: Some devices with custom firmware (like LineageOS custom builds) can only work with Power + Volume Reduction. If the phone doesn't respond to any combination, move on to the next method.
Method 2: Battery extraction (for models with removable battery)
This method is only suitable for older Xiaomi smartphones, Released until 2017: Redmi 3S, Redmi 4A, Mi Max and the like. Modern models (starting with the Redmi Note 5) have non-removable batteries, so physical extraction of the battery is impossible without disassembling the case.
Instructions for supported devices:
- Turn off your phone (if it still responds to the power button).
- Remove the back cover by poking it up with a plastic card or mediator.
- Gently disconnect the battery plume (if any) or remove the battery.
- Wait 30 seconds and set the battery back.
β οΈ Warning: Do not use metal objects to remove the lid, this can damage the antenna contacts or display.
Once the battery is removed, the phone will completely reset the capacitors, which sometimes helps to βresuscitateβ the device after a serious failure, but if the problem is caused by firmware damage (for example, after a failed update), this method will not help β you will need to flash it through the Fastboot.
Method 3: Reboot via Recovery Mode (if the phone is turned on but freezes)
If a Xiaomi smartphone is turned on but reboots cyclically or hangs on the logo, you can try rebooting through Recovery, a method that is milder than a hard reboot, as it allows the system to correctly complete processes.
To enter Recovery:
- Turn off your phone (if it responds to the power button).
- Press Power + Volume Increase and hold for 5-7 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the Mi Recovery logo appears.
- Use the volume buttons for navigation and the power button to select Reboot β Reboot to System.
| Xiaomi model | Combination for entering Recovery | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | Power + Volume Increase | Some firmware requires confirmation via Mi Account |
| POCO F3/F4/F5 | Power + Volume Increase | In Recovery, Fastboot is available for firmware |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14 | Power + Volume Increase | Supports touch control in Recovery |
| Redmi 9A/9C | Power + Volume Increase | You may need to connect to a charging connection to enter. |
If the Recovery phone freezes again, it's a sign of a serious firmware problem, and then only flashing through Fastboot or flashing it will help. EDL-regime (below).
What to do if Recovery requires a password?
Method 4: ADB commands for rebooting (if USB debugging is enabled)
If your Xiaomi has previously been activated debugging via USB (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 times tap β Additional settings β For developers β USB debugging), you can restart it using your computer and the ADB utility.
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC through USB-cable (preferably original).
- Open the command line (Windows) or the terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Enter the command to check the connection: adb devices If the device is determined, you will see its serial number.
- Run the reboot command: adb reboot
Advantages of this method:
- π§ Soft reboot without data loss
- π₯οΈ It works even if the screen does not respond to touch.
- π You can reboot directly to Fastboot or Recovery: adb reboot bootloader # for Fastboot adb reboot recovery # for Recovery
β οΈ Attention: If debugging is on USB It wasn't turned on beforehand, it won't work. MIUI Requires confirmation of connection on the phone screen, which is impossible when hanging.
Method 5: Reboot via Fastboot (if the phone doesn't turn on)
If the Xiaomi smartphone does not respond to buttons, does not load or even vibrate, but when connected to the PC is defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 or Fastboot, you can try to restart it through the firmware mode.
This will require:
- π₯οΈ Computer with installed Xiaomi drivers (you can download on the official website](https://new.c.mi.com/global/miuidownload/index))
- π Original. USB-cable (better from the set)
- π οΈ Fastboot utility (part of Android) SDK)
Steps:
- Connect the phone to the PC.
- Press Power + Volume Down for 10 seconds to log into the Fastboot.
- Open the command line and check the connection: fastboot devices
- Run the reboot command: fastboot reboot
If the phone is not detected in Fastboot, but the PC makes the deviceβs connection sound, try:
- π Connect to another USB-port (preferably) USB 2.0)
- π Reinstall Qualcomm or MediaTek drivers (depending on the processor)
- π Try another charger (sometimes the problem is malnutrition)
π‘
If fastboot reboot doesnβt work, try unlocking the bootloader first with fastboot oem unlock. Newer models (Xiaomi 12 and later) may require you to link your Mi Account via the Mi Unlock Tool.
Method 6: Hardware reset via test points (for power users)
If all previous methods did not help, and the phone does not show signs of life (does not warm, does not vibrate, does not detect the PC), there is an extreme option - hardware reset through test points (EDL-This method requires disassembly of the device and is suitable only for users with experience in electronic repair.
Test points (or EDL pins) are the contacts on the motherboard, the circuit of which puts the phone in emergency firmware mode, usually located near the battery connector or under the screen. For Xiaomi, most often it is:
- π§ Two dots with an inscription EDL or TEST
- π Contacts under the battery (required to be removed)
- π± Points on flexible display plume
Process:
- Take the phone apart, turn off the battery.
- Find test points (the charts for popular models are available on the 4PDA or XDA Developers forums).
- Close the points with tweezers or wire for 2-3 seconds.
- Connect the phone to a PC β it should be defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Swipe the device through the Mi Flash Tool or QFil.
β οΈ Warning: Incorrectly closing points can damage the motherboard. On newer models (Xiaomi 13, Redmi Note 12), test points are often varnished and need to be cleaned carefully. EDL Mi Account lock can work if the phone was tied to the account.
π‘
A hardware reset through test points is the last chance to "resuscitate" the phone before visiting the service center. If you are not sure about your skills, it is better to contact the professionals so as not to aggravate the problem.
Method 7: Waiting for battery discharge (if nothing helps)
If the phone is completely frozen, unresponsive, and not detected by the computer, the only safe way to do this is to wait until the battery is depleted to zero, which can take anywhere from a few hours to a day, depending on the model and the level of charge.
What happens when you discharge:
- π The power controller shuts down all components at a critical charge level.
- π§ RAM (RAM) It is cleaned, which resets the βhungryβ processes.
- π When you next connect to charging, the phone will turn on in normal mode.
How to speed up discharge:
- π Don't connect your phone to charging.
- πΆ Turn on mobile internet or Wi-Fi (if the screen is slightly responsive).
- π¦ Direct a bright light (for example, a flashlight) to the phone β this will activate the sensors and accelerate the discharge.
Critical information: On some models (for example, the POCO X3 Pro) after full discharge, deep discharge protection may work, and the phone will not turn on without connecting to the original charger. If after discharge the smartphone does not respond to charging, try holding the power button for 30-60 seconds.
What to do if the phone restarts cyclically (bootloop)
If Xiaomi turns on, shows the MIUI logo, then turns off and repeats the cycle, it's called a bootloop.
- π Failed firmware update
- π οΈ Damage to system files
- π Failure of the drive (eMMC or UFS)
- π§ Conflict after obtaining root rights
Priority decisions:
- Reset settings via Recovery: Wipe Data β Wipe All Data Deletes all data, but often solves the problem.
- Fastboot: Download the firmware for your model from [the official website] (https://new.c.mi.com/global/miuidownload/index) and run through the Mi Flash Tool.
- Swipe through EDL: If the Fastboot is not available, use test points (see Method 6).
- Motherboard replacement: If the firmware doesn't help, the problem is the hardware (the most common way is for eMMC memory to fail).
On newer models (Xiaomi 13, Redmi Note 12), the bootloop can be triggered by activating anti-rollback protection (Anti-Rollback), in which case the firmware of the older version of MIUI will lock the device, the only solution is to flash the current version of the firmware through Fastboot.
