Why Users Lose Access to Mi Accounts and What to Do About It
According to Xiaomi, one in five smartphone owners has experienced a Mi Account access problem at least once, ranging from simple forgetfulness to buying a used device with a profile tied to someone else. The main difficulty is that Xiaomiβs security system does not store passwords in plain sight on the device or in the cloud, which means that it is impossible to βseeβ it in the phone settings, but there are workarounds.
In this article, we will look at all the current ways to restore access, from official methods via email/SMS to technical solutions for locked devices. It is important to understand that if you bought a phone from hand, the previous owner could have linked it to your account, in which case the standard methods of recovery will not work β you will need to unlock through a service center or special tools like the Mi Unlock Tool.
Method 1: Recover password through the official Xiaomi website
The most reliable and legal method is to use the recovery function on account.xiaomi.com, which works if you have access to an email or phone number associated with your account.
- Go to the login page and click Forgot your password.
- Choose the method of recovery: by email or SMS.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with the account.
- Follow the instructions in the email or SMS to create a new password.
β οΈ Note: If you donβt remember the attached email/If you want to use the phone, this method will not work, then go to the alternative methods below. Also note that Xiaomi may request additional verification (for example, a code from a backup email) if the account was created a long time ago or from another region.
Method 2: View saved passwords in the browser or manager
If you've previously logged in to a Mi Account via a browser on your computer or phone, the password could have been saved in the password manager.
- π Google Chrome: Go to Settings β Auto-filling β Passwords and find a line from account.xiaomi.com.
- π Safari (Mac/iPhone): Open the Settings. β Passwords and enter in search "Xiaomi".
- π Third-party managers: B 1Password, KeePass or Bitwarden find a login entry for Xiaomi.
- π€ Android: Check out Google in your phone settings β Managing a Google Account β Security β Password manager.
If you find a password that doesn't fit, you may be out of date, in which case you can try resetting it through the official website (see Method 1). If the password manager is empty, move on to the next method.

If you are using Mi Browser on a Xiaomi smartphone, check the saved logins in the browser menu: Settings β Privacy β Saved login data.
Method 3: Use a backup of Mi Cloud (if saved)
Not everyone knows, but Xiaomi lets you save some of your Mi Cloud account information, including recovery information. If you have synced on your device, try this:
- Open the Mi Cloud app on your phone (or go to Settings β Mi Account β Mi Cloud).
- Try to enter through a fingerprint or PIN-code (if configured).
- If you are successful, check Account Management β Security β there may be a backup email or recovery phone.
πΉ Important: This method only works if:
- π± The device is not locked (you can log in).
- βοΈ Synchronization with Mi Cloud has been activated earlier.
- π Alternative authentication is configured on the phone (PIN, print).
Check your internet connection
Make sure your phone has enough charge (>30%)
Have a backup email/phone on hand (if tied)
Turn it off. VPN (It can block access to Xiaomi servers)-->
Method 4: Reset password through the engineering menu (for advanced users)
If standard methods donβt help and the phone is unlocked, you can try resetting your password through an engineering menu or ADB. This method is suitable for Xiaomi Android-based models and requires technical skills.
π Instructions for devices with unlocked loader:
- Activate Developer Mode (7 times click on the MIUI version in your phone settings).
- Enable USB debugging in Settings β Additional β For developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell am start -n com.xiaomi.account/.ui.ResetPasswordActivity
- Follow the instructions on the screen to reset your password.
β οΈ Note: This method does not work on all firmware and can lead to locking the device if done incorrectly. On models with a locked bootloader (Redmi Note 10, POCO X3 And newer, it probably won't work.
What if the ADB does not recognize the device?
Method 5: Unlocking through Xiaomi Service Center (official method)
If all previous methods failed, and the phone is locked because of a link to someone else's Mi Account, you have to contact the service center, which is the only legal way to unlock devices purchased with hand.
- π Check or document confirming purchase (if the phone is new).
- π± The device itself (must be in good condition).
- π Passport of the holder (to confirm the identity).
- π³ Payment for the service (cost varies from 500 to 3000 rubles depending on the model).
π Where to look for service centers:
- The official support site of Xiaomi is a map with addresses.
- Partner stores (Svyaznoy, M. Video, Eldorado often have service points).
- Authorized workshops (check for Xiaomi certificate).
β³ Unlock time: 1 to 7 days (depending on the workload of the center), in some cases, it may be necessary to send the device to a central service center (for example, in Moscow or St. Petersburg).
| Model of the device | The cost of unlocking (β½) | Date(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi 9/9A/9C | 800β1200 | 1β3 | Often unlocked in 1 day |
| POCO X3/X3 Pro | 1500β2000 | 3β5 | Confirmation of purchase is required |
| Mi 11/11 Lite | 2000β3000 | 5β7 | Possible to be sent to the central CC |
| Black Shark 4/5 | 2500β3500 | 7+ | Difficult procedure due to gaming profile |
Method 6: Alternative methods (at your own risk)
If the official methods are not suitable, some users resort to unauthorized unlock methods. We do not recommend using them, but for completeness of information, we will give a brief overview:
- π Mi Account Unlock Tool, Xiaomi Tool V2 β They are working on older models (Redmi). 4X, Mi A1), but often contain viruses.
- π‘ TestPoint bypass: Physically closing contacts on the account reset board.Risk of damaging the device - 70%.
- π₯οΈ Firmware through EDL: Requires special equipment and knowledge Qualcomm 9008 mode.
β οΈ Note: The use of informal methods may lead to:
- π« Block IMEI (The phone will be a brick").
- π‘οΈ Loss of warranty (even if it was a loss).
- π» Data leakage (many "separations" steal logins / passwords).
π‘
Any unofficial unlock methods violate Xiaomiβs user agreement and can result in permanent locking of the device, and their use is at your sole risk.
Method 7: Buying an unlocked device (extreme case)
If all attempts to restore access have failed, and the phone is locked at the Mi-account level, it is sometimes cheaper to buy a new (or used, but proven) device.
- π Account status: Ask the seller to exit the Mi Account with you and make a reset to factory settings.
- π Documents: Having a check or warranty card reduces the risk of buying a locked phone.
- π Verification IMEI: Use services like IMEI.info to make sure your device isnβt blacklisted.
π‘ Tip: When buying used Xiaomi, ask the seller:
- Go to Settings β Mi Account and show that the device is not tied.
- Perform reset via Settings β About phone β Reset settings.
- Turn on the phone after reset and make sure that you do not need to enter a login / password.
