Forgot the password from Mi Account and can’t unlock a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone? This problem is familiar to many users — especially after resetting or buying a used device. Without the right password, you won’t be able to activate your phone, download apps from the Mi App Store, sync data, or use Xiaomi’s cloud services.
In this article, we will look at all the formal and informal ways to restore access, from a standard password reset via email/SMS to unlock via Fastboot and contact for support. Importantly, some methods require pre-linking your account to your phone or PC, so act on the situation. If you buy a device from hand, check the status of Mi Account before you pay, otherwise you risk getting a brick.
1. Standard password recovery via email or SMS
The easiest way is to use the official password reset procedure on Xiaomi’s website, which is suitable if you have access to a linked email or phone number.
How it works:
- 📧 Go to the recovery page: account.xiaomi.com/pass/forgetPassword.
- 🔑 Choose the method of recovery: by email or by SMS (if the number is confirmed).
- 📲 Enter the code from the email or message and set a new password.
- 🔄 Wait 5-10 minutes – changes will apply to all devices.
⚠️ Note: If you don’t remember the email linked, try to restore it through the mailbox history (look for emails from the service).@xiaomi.com). If your phone number has changed, use alternative methods.
2. Recovery via backup email or security issues
If the primary email isn’t available but you provided a backup address or answered secret questions when registering, try this method:
- On the Mi Account login page, click “Forgot your password?”
- Select “Restore via backup email” or “Apply security questions.”
- For security questions, enter the answers exactly to the point (taking into account the register and punctuation marks!).
- Create a new password and save it in a safe place (e.g. Google Password Manager).
⚠️ Note: Mi Account security questions are often asked in Chinese (e.g., “When you created an account”). If you registered through third-party services (e.g., Facebook or Google), this method will not work.
💡
If you often forget passwords, use a password manager (such as Bitwarden or 1Password) and save data from Mi Account with the tag “Xiaomi” there.
3. Unlocking through a tethered phone (if the device is on hand)
If you have physical access to a Xiaomi smartphone that has already been authorized with Mi Account, you can reset your password directly from the device:
- 📱 Open the Settings. → Xiaomi account.
- 🔒 Tap on the account avatar and select “Account Management».
- 🔄 Click on “Forgot your password?” and follow the instructions (entering will be required). PIN-Fingerprint or code to verify identity).
- 📧 If you request an email, use the address associated with the device (you can see it in Settings). → The phone. → Mi Account Status).
This method only works if:
- ✅ Phone not locked after resetting settings.
- ✅ You did not log out of your account manually.
- ✅ The device is synchronized with Mi Cloud.
☑️ Check before unlocking via phone
4. Unlock via Fastboot (for advanced users)
If standard methods don’t work and the phone is locked after being reset (Mi Account Lock), you can try unlocking it via Fastboot mode, which requires a computer and basic ADB skills.
⚠️ Note: This method only works on bootloader devices. If the bootloader is locked, you will need official permission from Xiaomi (the procedure takes up to 30 days!).
Instructions:
- Turn off the phone and press Volume Down + Power to log into the Fastboot.
- Connect the device to your PC and install the Mi Flash Tool drivers.
- Download the Mi Account Unlock Tool (e.g. XiaomiTool V2).
- Run the command in the terminal: fastboot oem unlock-go or use the graphical interface of the utility.
- Restart your phone and the lock should disappear.
🔴 Risks:
- 🚨 Possible loss of data (photos, contacts, messages).
- 🚨 On new devices (after 2021), the method may not work due to enhanced protection.
- 🚨 Unofficial tools may contain malicious code – download them only from trusted forums (XDA Developers, 4PDA).
What if the Fastboot doesn’t recognize the device?
5. Appeal in support of Xiaomi (official way)
If nothing works, the last option is to contact Xiaomi official support, which is the longest but most reliable method, especially if you have proof of account ownership (checks, device serial number, etc.).
How to apply:
- Go to the support page: mi.com/global/support.
- Select "Mi Account» → «Forgot Password».
- Fill out the form by specifying: 📝 Serial number of the device (IMEI or S/N — You can see it on the box or through *#06#). 📧 Linked email (even if access is lost). 📅 Date of account creation (approximately). 📄 Scan of the document confirming the identity (passport, rights).
Send a request and wait for a response (usually 3-7 days).
📌 Important: Xiaomi support may request additional data, for example:
| Requirement for support | Where to get information |
|---|---|
| Date of first device binding to account | Check purchase or order history in the Mi Store |
| The last 4 digits of a linked bank card | If you bought something through Mi Pay |
| Screenshot of the lock screen (with IMEI) | Take a picture of your phone screen before resetting. |
| Order number from Mi Store | Emails to emails after purchase |
💡
Official support is the only legal way to unlock if you do not have access to email/SMS and the bootloader is blocked.
6.Buying a device with a blocked Mi Account: how to avoid cheating
If you buy Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO from hand, be sure to check your Mi Account status before transferring money.
- 🔍 Ask the seller to exit Mi Account in settings (Settings) → Xiaomi account → Reset your phone to factory settings (Settings) → Additionally. → Reset settings. Turn on your phone and go through the initial setting without linking to your account.
- 📱 If you reset your phone and you need to enter a password from your Mi Account, it means that the device is tied to someone else's account!
- 🛡️ Check the status of the lock through IMEI at imei.info (specify "Clean" or "Blacklist»).
⚠️ Warning: Scammers often sell phones with Mi Account tied, claiming "password will reset after the update." That's not true - the lock will stay and you'll get a "brick" for your money. The only way to remove the peg is by formally appealing for proof of purchase.
💡 Tip: Buy used Xiaomi only from trusted sellers (for example, in Avito Garant or Yandex Market with buyer protection). If the seller refuses to drop the phone with you - this is an excuse to abandon the deal.
