Smartphone sales are always stressful, with the risk of losing sensitive information. Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices face the need not only to erase files, but also to untie the device from cloud services so that the new owner does not gain access to your personal life. The MIUI shell and its successor HyperOS have deep integrations with the Mi Account, which requires a special approach to preparing the gadget for transfer to another person.
Many users make the critical mistake of relying solely on Reset. Without manual preparation and detachment of accounts, even a dropped phone can turn into a brick for a buyer because of activation blocking. In this article, we will discuss a step-by-step algorithm that ensures complete data cleanup and no problems when reselling your device.
Don't ignore this stage, even if you're selling your phone to friends or family. Current data recovery techniques allow you to retrieve deleted information unless it's overwritten by new data, so security should come first before you part with your gadget.
Backup and synchronization of data
The first and most logical step is to save all the important data. Before you start the process of destroying information on your device, you need to make sure that you have an up-to-date copy of your contacts, photos and correspondence. There are several ways to do this in the Xiaomi ecosystem, and the choice depends on your habits and the amount of data you have.
The most reliable method is to use cloud storage Mi Cloud. To do this, go to your phone settings, select the "Mi Account" section and make sure that sync is enabled for all the necessary categories: contacts, messages, notes, voice recorder and gallery. After sync is enabled, click the "Sync" button and wait for the process to be completed.
💡
Use Wi-Fi to back up to the cloud so you don’t waste mobile traffic, especially if you have a lot of high-resolution photos and videos.
An alternative option for those who don’t trust the cloud or have a limited amount of free space (5GB) is local copying. You can use the built-in Security –> Backup app to save data to an SD card or connect the phone to your computer via USB and copy folders manually.
- 📸 Photos and videos: Check folders DCIM, Screenshots and WhatsApp, as they often remain out of the ordinary sync.
- 💬 Messages and call logs: Use the Mi Mover app or third-party snails to save your correspondence history.
- 🔐 Passwords and keys: Make sure you remember passwords from your Google and Mi accounts, or export them to a trusted location.
Don't forget your messaging data. WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber store your email history separately from your system settings. In each app's settings, find the Backup section and create a fresh archive on Google Drive or locally. This will take time, but save important dialogs.
Unbinding accounts and security services
The most important step that is often overlooked is uncoupling the device from the accounts, and if you just reset the settings without leaving your Mi Account and Google Account, FRP (Factory Reset Protection) will work, and the new owner will not be able to activate the phone without your password, making it impossible to sell.
First, log out of your Google account. Go to Settings -> Accounts and Sync (or "Users and Accounts"). Select your Gmail address and click "Delete Account." The system will alert you that all data associated with this accaAccount will be deleted from the device - this is exactly what we need.
⚠️ Note: If two-factor authentication is enabled on your phone, make sure you have access to a phone number or backup code, as a confirmation may be required when logging in to a new device.
Then we go to Xiaomi. In the Settings menu, look for the "Mi Account" section. Click on the "Get Out" button. The system can ask you several times for confirmation and alert you to the loss of sync data. Confirm exit. Only after you successfully log out of both accounts can you move on to the next steps.
💡
Completely decoupling Google and Mi accounts before resetting is the only condition that ensures that the new owner does not block activation (FRP).
It’s also worth checking for other linked services, such as paid-for antivirus, third-party cloud storage, or parental control apps. Deleting an account from your phone’s settings doesn’t always unsubscribe, so check your subscription status on Google Play or the App Store.
Cleaning messengers and banking applications
Banking applications and instant messengers contain the most sensitive financial and personal information, and even after resetting, it is theoretically possible to recover fragments of data, so their removal should be approached as carefully as possible, primarily with the applications of banks: Sberbank Online, Tinkoff, Alfa-Bank and others.
Before removing bank applications, it is recommended to log out of the profile inside the application itself, if such an option is provided, although it is often enough to simply uninstall the application. However, the more reliable method is to clear the application data before deleting. To do this, go to Settings -> Apps -> All applications, find the banking application, select Memory and click Clear.
For instant messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram, it’s important not only to delete the app, but also to deactivate or log out of the account inside it.In Telegram, this can be done via the privacy settings by selecting “Complete all other sessions,” although when selling it’s less critical if you’ve already deleted your Google account. In WhatsApp, be sure to back up the account we talked about earlier, and then delete the account in the app’s settings before it’s deleted.
- 🏦 Banks: Remove all bank apps, clear cache and data, remove widgets from desktop.
- 💳 Google Pay/Mi Pay: Remove Linked Cards from Contactless Payment Service.
- 🔑 Access Keys: Check the Security app for saved Wi-Fi passwords and access keys.
What to do if the bank application is not deleted?
Don’t forget about two-factor authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. If you don’t transfer codes to a new device before selling, you may lose access to your accounts forever. Use the account export feature or add new devices to your trusted list before cleaning your old phone.
Full reset (Hard Reset)
Once all the data is saved and the accounts are untied, it’s time for the final and most important action, a complete reset, to bring Xiaomi’s phone back to factory status by deleting all user files, apps and settings, and to reset through the settings menu, which is the safest and most understandable way for most users.
To start, go to Settings -> About Phone. Find "Reset" or "Erase All Data." The system will give you two options: "Reset" (without deleting files) and "Erase all data." We need the second option. Before confirming, the phone will show a list of what will be deleted and ask you to enter the unlock password or the pattern lock.
☑️ Checklist before reset
Once you have your password and validated it, the phone will restart and the cleaning process will begin. On current models with fast UFS drives, it takes 2 to 5 minutes. At this time, the Redmi logo or Mi logo can be displayed on the screen, as well as the progress scale. Under no circumstances, interrupt the process or force the phone to turn off.
⚠️ Note: If you are selling your phone due to software problems (frequent freezes, errors), it is recommended that you do not set up the phone after the first reset, but immediately reset.
There is also a Recovery Reset method that is used if the phone is not turned on or locked. This requires turning off the phone and pressing the Up + Power button combination. From the Recovery menu, select the language (English), then Wipe Data -> Wipe All Data. However, this method does not always guarantee full unsetting of the Mi Account if the exit was not performed before the reset, so use the settings menu if the phone is functioning normally.
Physical training and verification SIM-map
Software cleaning is complete, but the physical conditioning of the device is also important for a successful sale. The buyer will evaluate the appearance and completeness. SIM-MicroSD cards and memory cards. Often users forget about the "flash drive" on which personal photos can remain.
Look carefully for contaminants. The screen and camera are the places that get dirty first. Rub them with a soft microfiber, slightly moistened in a special solution for screens or just dry cloth. Do not use aggressive chemicals, alcohol in large quantities or paper wipes that can leave scratches on an oleophobic coating.
| Element | Action. | Tool. |
|---|---|---|
| Screen. | Degreasing and polishing | Microfiber, screen spray. |
| Charging connector | Dust and pile removal | Toothpick, compressed air |
| Cameras | Cleaning the lenses | Dry soft tissue |
| Corps | Removal of traces from the cover | Wet wipe (without alcohol) |
Pay special attention to the USB-C charging connector. It often accumulates pocket dust, which compresses and interferes with the tight connection of the cable. Carefully, without heavy pressure, walk along the connector with a wooden toothpick or use a can of compressed air, which will show the buyer that you took care of the device.
If you still have the original box, charger and cable, be sure to fold them together. Having the original box often allows you to get 10-15% more for the phone, as this confirms the legality of the origin of the device and the care of the owner.
IMEI check and final inspection
Before you give the phone to the customer, it's recommended that you do a final check. Even after the reset, it's good to make sure the phone is working correctly. Turn on the cleaned device. It should greet you with a choice of language, like a new one. If the phone requests a password from a Google or Mi Account, you missed the detachment step, and you need to repeat the process.
Check the compliance IMEI It's on the box, in the settings (if you've seen it before it resets), and on the device itself. IMEI duplicated SIM-The matching of the numbers ensures that the buyer does not get a device with broken numbers or assembled from parts of different phones.
It's also worth checking the core modules: speakers, microphone, vibromotor and touchscreen. To do this, the engineering menu (call # #6484##) has tests of all components. Take a quick touchscreen and speaker test to make sure the device is working properly, which will save you from the customer's claims in the future.
⚠️ Warning: Never give a customer a Mi Account or Google account access code, even if they claim that the phone is locked. This is a sign that the reset was not performed correctly and the problem needs to be solved by re-flashing or restoring access through the site, rather than passing passwords.
After successfully turning on and selecting the language (you can choose Russian, but not enter Wi-Fi data), the phone is ready for sale. Turn it off to save battery power for demonstration. Pack the device in a box or security package. Now your Xiaomi is fully ready for the new owner, and your data is safe.
