When the screen of a Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco smartphone suddenly goes out and then lights up again with the Android logo and a strange menu on a black or blue background, this menu is called Recovery Mode, and it is designed to be deeply diagnosed, reset or update, but not for everyday use. If your device “hangs” in this state and refuses to respond to normal touches, it means that the MIUI or HyperOS operating system could not boot properly.
Most of the time, it's a software failure, an interrupted update, or accidentally pressing a button combination in your pocket. Don't panic: 90 percent of the time, it's not a physical failure, it's a security mechanism that you can bypass. You don't have to bring it to the service center immediately, because there are proven methods to get it back to normal.
Before you get into action, you need to understand what exactly happened to your device. If you just updated your firmware and your phone stayed on this menu after you rebooted, then the installation process was flawed. System files may have been corrupted or there wasn't enough memory to complete the procedure. In any case, the algorithm of actions will depend on whether the touchscreen responds and what options are available on the screen.
Why Xiaomi is leaving Recovery and how to prevent it
The main reason for getting into recovery mode is a system file integrity error. The operating system performs a self-check at start, and if it detects damaged partitions, it automatically switches to safe Recovery mode so that the user can restore functionality, often after unsuccessful Root rights experiments or custom recovery installations.
Another common culprit is mechanical stress, and in pockets of jeans or bags, volume buttons are often clamped, and when you turn on the phone, the pressed Volume Up button, along with the power button, enters the service menu, and the problem can be that the buttons stick due to moisture or small debris.
It’s also worth mentioning the drive issues: If the smartphone’s internal memory has physical defects or file system logic errors, the bootloader simply can’t read the data to run Android. In this case, the phone will cycle to try to boot up and return to the recovery menu again.
💡
If the buttons on your smartphone’s body often stick or are tight, try not to carry the phone in tightly packed pockets without a case to rule out accidental pressing of the key combination.
Basic exit methods: reboot and check buttons
The first and easiest step to take is to try a normal reboot. The Recovery menu, even if it looks scary, often has a Reboot option. The navigation on this menu is done with volume buttons (up and down), and the choice of item is confirmed by the power button.
If the Reboot to system is present, select it. The phone will try to start as normal. However, if the device returns to Recovery after the Mi logo, then the problem goes deeper than pure chance.
Make sure to check the physical buttons. Press them in turn, they should be clear clicking. If the volume button "fails" or does not return to its original position, the phone will endlessly read the signal to enter recovery mode, in which case it is critical to release the mechanics of the button by gently tapping on the end of the device or blowing holes with compressed air.
☑️ Primary diagnosis
Using the Wipe Data Item to Reset Settings
If a simple reboot doesn’t work and the phone throws you back into the Recovery menu, the system’s configuration files are likely damaged. In this case, the only software solution left is a complete data reset, known as Wipe Data, which will delete all your photos, contacts and apps, but save the smartphone itself from the brick.
To perform the reset, select Wipe Data (or Wipe & Reset), then confirm the action by selecting Wipe All Data. The system will alert you to the loss of information. After completing the process, which may take a few minutes, select Reboot. The phone will start as new, requiring initial setup.
⚠️ Note: Using Wipe Data will result in a complete loss of all user data.If you did not have a backup in the Mi Cloud or Google cloud, it will be impossible to restore files after this procedure.
Once reset, the phone can hang on the logo for a long time — that's okay. The system performs initial application optimization and new file structures. Don't interrupt this process and keep the device on charge, as the initial MIUI setup requires significant CPU resources.
Exiting Recovery with a Computer and ADB
For advanced users who don’t want to lose data or can’t use the screen menu, there is a method of output via a computer, USB-cable and installed drivers ADB (Android Debug Bridge: This method is effective if the touchscreen doesn't work, but the system partially responds to commands.
Connect your phone to your computer. If you have debugging in the Recovery menu (which is rare in a stock Recovery, but it's possible in custom ones), you can send a reboot command. Open the command line on your PC and type in the following instructions:
adb rebootIf the standard command does not work, you can try sending the signal directly to the bootloader:
adb reboot bootloaderThis method requires pre-preparedness, so it's not always suitable for here-and-now emergencies. However, if you've previously enabled USB debugging and installed drivers, this is the cleanest way to exit without losing data.

Table of error and action codes in the Recovery menu
The recovery mode interface may vary depending on the version of MIUI (Chinese or global) and the type of menu (stock or custom TWRP). Below is a table of the main items you may encounter and their purpose.
| Item | Description of function | Risk of data loss |
|---|---|---|
| Reboot | Normal device reboot | No. |
| Wipe Data | Full reset to factory settings | Tall (removes everything) |
| Connect with MIAssistant | Mode for connecting to a PC for firmware | No (safe) |
| View Recovery Logs | Viewing system error logs | No. |
| Safety Reset | Reset only security settings (passwords) | Low. |
Special attention should be paid to the item Connect with MIAssistant. If you choose it and connect the cable to your computer, you will run the Xiaomi Mi Flash Tool (if installed) or standard Explorer. This allows you to try to reflash the device without logging into the Fastboot.
Sometimes users confuse Recovery with Fastboot mode, where the screen shows a hare fixing an android. These are different modes: Fastboot is used for deep firmware through the PC, and Recovery is used for recovery inside the phone (10-15 seconds) by pressing the power button.
💡
Recovery mode is designed to restore the system to work, while Fastboot is used by engineers and advanced users to write new firmware partitions.
The Problem of Cyclical Reset (Bootloop)
When the phone reboots endlessly as it enters and exits Recovery, it's called Bootloop, which happens when the system tries to boot, finds an error, goes to Recovery, you reboot, and the cycle repeats, often as a result of a software version conflict or a system partition overflow.
If the Wipe Data reset doesn’t help break this cycle, the problem could be hardware, such as a bloated battery can put pressure on the plumes or (motherboard), causing short circuits that are perceived by the processor as a critical boot error.
In rare cases, the cause is a non-original display. If you recently changed the screen to a cheap counterpart, the display controller can give out incorrect signals, blocking normal Android boot, in which case only replacing the module with an original or high-quality counterpart helps.
⚠️ Note: If after a complete reset and attempts to flash the phone continues to go to Recovery, there is a high probability of failure of the memory chip (eMMC/UFS). Further attempts to turn on can finally "kill" the drive.
Fastboot Firmware as a Radical Solution
When all software methods are exhausted, you will be left with "heavy artillery" - complete flashing through Fastboot mode. To do this, you will need to download the official firmware for your model (file with the extension.tgz) from miui.com and the Mi Flash Tool utility.
Put your phone in Fastboot mode (pressing the power button and volume down on the device turned off). Connect it to your PC, start Mi Flash, select the downloaded firmware file and press the Flash button. It's important to choose Clean All mode to completely clear the memory of errors.
This process takes 5 to 15 minutes. If the Success message appears at the end, the phone will automatically restart, and this is guaranteed to eliminate any software bugs that caused the Recovery to get stuck, returning the device to its factory state.

When is the time to bring your phone to service?
Despite the wide possibilities of self-recovery, there are situations where the intervention of the wizard is inevitable: if the phone does not respond to any combination of buttons, the screen remains black or only the charging indicator is lit - a problem in the power chain or controller.
Also, the reason for going to the service is physical damage: water, bumps, falls, moisture could cause the contacts to corrosion of the volume buttons, which makes the phone constantly "think" that the button is pinched. Self-drying in rice is no longer helpful here, you need ultrasonic cleaning.
If you have completed all the steps, including flashing, but the phone still does not leave Recovery or gives errors when booting (for example, Update failed), this is a direct signal of malfunctioning hardware.
