Why Xiaomi is Fastboot and what it means
You turned on your Xiaomi smartphone, and instead of the usual logo, the screen displays the inscription FASTBOOT and a hare in a hat-eared? Don't panic - this is not a breakdown, but an engineering mode that is used to firmware, unlock the bootloader or restore the system. However, if the phone got stuck in this state without your participation, the reasons may be different:
First, a Fastboot can appear after a failed MIUI update β for example, if the firmware has crashed or the installation process has been interrupted. Second, root-access applications that conflict with the system may be to blame. Finally, a damaged EFS partition (where IMEI and network settings are stored) or a hardware failure β for example, a flash memory failure. It is important to understand that the Fastboot mode itself is not dangerous, but if the phone does not leave it, it is a signal to action.
On the models of Redmi Note 10/11 Pro, POCO X3/X4 and flagship Xiaomi 12/13 the algorithm of exit from Fastboot is the same, but there are nuances. For example, on devices with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (most modern Xiaomi) to recover you will need QDLoader 9008, and on older models with MediaTek β the utility SP Flash Tool. Next, we will analyze all the ways in order β from the simplest to the radical.
Simple Ways to Get Out of Fastboot Without Losing Data
Before you resort to complex manipulations, try standard methods, which work in 60% of cases and do not require special knowledge.
- π Reboot forcefully. Press the power button for 15 to 20 seconds until the screen goes out. Then turn the phone on again. Sometimes the system itself restores to work after a hard reboot.
- π If the battery is under 10%, Xiaomi may not leave the Fastboot. Connect the original cable and charger, wait 10-15 minutes, then try again to turn on.
- π± On the phone that's turned off, press the volume up. + Power for 5-7 seconds on some models (e.g. Redmi) 9A) This triggers the Recovery menu, from where you can restart the system.
If these methods didnβt work, check if the screen says βThis device is lockedβ or βDevice is corruptβ β meaning that the bootloader is locked or the firmware is damaged β and more serious actions will be needed.
How to exit Fastboot via Mi Flash Tool (official method)
If the simple methods did not help, you will have to connect the phone to your computer and use the proprietary utility Mi Flash Tool. This method works on all Xiaomi models, but requires preliminary preparation:
- Download the Mi Flash Tool from Xiaomi's official website (version no lower than 20200716). Install drivers for your model (e.g. Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 for smartphones on Snapdragon).
- Download the firmware for your model from https://new.c.mi.com/global/miuidownload. Select the Fastboot version (file with.tgz extension).
- Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode. To do this, keep Volume down + Power when connecting the cable.
Follow the instructions:
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and point the path to the unpacked firmware.
- At the bottom of the window, select Clean all or Clean all and lock.
- Press Flash and wait until the process is complete (usually 5-10 minutes).
βοΈ Preparation for firmware through Mi Flash
Important: If the phone doesnβt turn on after firmware or you have an Anti-rollback error, you have an older version of MIUI than the previous one, in which case you will have to look for firmware with the same or newer Anti-rollback number (for example, ARB 4.0).
Recovery Mode (if Fastboot doesnβt help)
If the Mi Flash Tool doesn't recognize the device or the firmware isn't installed, try Recovery Mode, which allows you to reset your settings, clear your cache, or install the update manually.
- Turn off your phone (if it's in Fastboot, press the power for 20 seconds).
- Press Volume Up + Power and hold until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select the language (usually English or Chinese) then:
- π Reboot β System - an attempt at normal booting.
- π§Ή Wipe Data β Wipe All Data β reset to factory settings (data will be deleted!).
- π Mount β System - mounting partition for manual firmware.
- π§ Advanced β Repair File System β File System Integrity Check.
If you have selected Wipe Data, the phone should boot to the clean system after the reset, and if not, try installing the update manually via Apply update from ADB or Apply update from SD card (you need a firmware file in.zip format on the memory card).
What happens if the Recovery Mode does not open?
Unlock the bootloader (if Fastboot shows "Device is locked")
On new Xiaomi models (released after 2021), the bootloader is locked by default. If you see the words "This device is locked" or "Device is corrupt", then the system cannot boot due to manufacturer restrictions, in which case you will have to unlock the bootloader through the official utility Mi Unlock Tool.
The process takes up to 72 hours (due to Xiaomi's policy) and requires:
- Mi Account linked to your phone (should be added to your Mi Cloud settings in advance!).
- Mi Unlock Tool (download from https://en.miui.com/unlock)
- Computer with Windows 7/10/11 and disabled antivirus (it can block drivers).
Unlocking algorithm:
- Open the Mi Unlock Tool and log in to your Mi Account.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (hold Volume Down + Power).
- Press Unlock and wait until it is completed (it may take several attempts).
- Once unlocked, run your phone through the Mi Flash Tool (see previous section).
β οΈ Warning: Unlocking the bootloader resets all the data on the phone, including photos, contacts and apps, and it also voids the warranty if it's still valid. POCO F3/F4 Xiaomi 12T After unlocking, you may need to re-activate Mi Account to use some features (e.g. Find Device).
Hardware causes: when Fastboot is a symptom of a breakdown
If none of the software methods worked, the problem could be the hardware. Here are the most common hardware reasons for hanging out in Fastboot:
| Reason. | Symptoms | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Damage to flash memory (eMMC/UFS) | Phone is not defined in Mi Flash Tool, firmware errors | Replacement of memory chip in the service center |
| Oxidation of contact on board | Fastboot appears after moisture or a fall | Cleaning the board with ultrasound or replacing connectors |
| Failure of the power controller | The phone spontaneously turns off, does not hold a charge | Diagnostics with a multimeter, replacing the controller |
| Battery problems | Fastboot appears when connected to charging | Replacement of the battery with the original |
To diagnose hardware problems, you can use Xiaomi test modes:
- In Fastboot mode, type in the command: fastboot oem edl If the phone doesnβt respond β itβs probably a problem with a USB port or controller.
- Try connecting your phone to another PC or cable, and if it's not detected in any mode (Fastboot, Recovery, EDL), it's a sign of hardware failure.
π‘
If the phone is warming up in Fastboot mode or emits unusual sounds (squeaking, crackling), immediately turn it off from charging and do not turn it on until you visit the service center.
What to do if Fastboot appears after MIUI update
One of the most common reasons for a Fastboot freeze is a failed system update, which can happen if:
- π₯ The update has been downgraded with errors (for example, due to an unstable internet connection).
- π During installation, the battery sat down.
- π§ The firmware is not designed for your model (e.g., tried to install Global). ROM Chinese version of the phone).
- π οΈ There were modifications (root, custom recovery) in the system that conflict with the new version. MIUI.
The solutions depend on the situation:
- If the update is interrupted: try to log into Recovery and select Apply update from ADB. Connect your phone to your PC and type the command: adb sideload [name file update.zip]
- If the firmware doesnβt fit: download the correct version of MIUI for your model (check by number in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version) and run through the Mi Flash Tool.
- If you have root: You should always remove Magisk or other modifications before upgrading, restore stock recovery and re-install the update.
On Xiaomi 11/12/13 models with dynamic firmware (Dynamic Partition) after a failed update, you may need to completely flash the partition formatting. In this case, in the Mi Flash Tool, choose Clean all and lock mode.
π‘
If the phone loads after the upgrade but is unstable (lagging, overheating), reset via Recovery (Wipe Data). MIUI.
