The situation is familiar to many: you tried to flash Xiaomi, reset or install custom firmware through TWRP, but the phone suddenly stuck in the recovery menu. The screen does not respond to clicks, the buttons do not work, and the reboot returns you back to the same menu. What to do? Don't panic - in 90% of cases, the problem can be solved without going to the service center.
The reasons for hanging in the recovery can be different, from a banal firmware error to hardware failures. Most often, damaged firmware files, improperly installed TWRP (especially on new models with dynamic partitions), or conflict between the recovery version and the MIUI version. Less commonly, hardware problems, such as damaged memory or chip failure. In this article, we will analyze all possible scenarios from simple to complex, and give clear instructions how to bring the phone back to life.
Before you start, make sure you have:
- π Charged battery (minimum 50%) β discharging during manipulation can turn the phone into a βbrickΒ».
- π» Computer with installed Xiaomi drivers (you can download on the official website).
- π Cable USB (preferably original or high quality).
- π Backup of important data (if the phone is still reacting).

1. Forced reset - the first step
The easiest thing to do is to remove the battery (if it's removable) or to pinch a button combination to force it to reboot. On most Xiaomi models, these are:
- π± Nutrition + Loudness up β hold 10-15 seconds.
- π If it doesnβt work, try eating. + Loudness down.
On some devices (such as the Xiaomi 12/13 series or Redmi Note 11/12), you may need to pinch Power + both volume buttons at the same time. If the phone vibrates and reboots, you're in luck. If not, move on to the next step.
β οΈ Note: On models with dynamic partitions (for example, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Redmi) K50) Forced reboot can reset settings TWRP, And you'll have to re-install it.
If the phone reboots and hits the recaveri again, it's a deeper problem, maybe the firmware is damaged or the boot partition is missing, and then just flashing it back will help.
2. Check buttons and hardware malfunctions
Sometimes the problem isn't the software, it's the physical malfunction of the buttons, so if you put the Volume Up button on, for example, the phone will be constantly loaded into the receptacle.
- π Carefully inspect the buttons for contamination or mechanical damage.
- π§Ή Clean the buttons carefully with alcohol or compressed air.
- π§ Try pressing each button individually β they should return to their original position.
If the buttons are working normally but the phone is still loading into the recover, try connecting it to your computer and checking for a reaction. For example, in Windows, the phone should be defined as a Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (EDL mode) or Android Bootloader Interface (fastboot mode).
How to Get Into EDL Mode on Xiaomi
Recovery through the Mi Flash Tool (official method)
If the phone is detected in fastboot or EDL mode, you can try to reflash it using the official Mi Flash Tool utility. This method is suitable for most models, including Redmi 9/10, Poco X3/X4, Mi 10/11.
Step-by-step:
- Download the official firmware for your model (choose the Fastboot version).
- Unpack the archive into a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\Xiaomi\ROM).
- Install the Mi Flash Tool and Xiaomi drivers.
- Connect the phone in fastboot mode (clip Power + Volume down).
- In the utility, click Select, specify the path to the firmware folder, then Refresh β Flash.
- Select Clean All or Clean All and Lock (if you want to lock the bootloader).
| Firmware mode | What's he doing? | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Clean all | Deletes all data, flashes the system | If the phone freezes after an update or reset |
| Clean all and lock | Switch + block the loader | If you need to return the phone to factory condition |
| Save user data | Flows without deleting data | Only if you are sure that the problem is not user data |
β οΈ Warning: Clean all and lock firmware will block the bootloader. TWRP Or custom firmware will be impossible without unlocking.
If the Mi Flash Tool gives an error (for example, critical partition flashing is not allowed), then the bootloader is blocked, in which case you either need to unlock it through the official Xiaomi website, or use alternative methods (for example, firmware via EDL).

4. Recovery via TWRP (if installed)
If the phone has TWRP installed but it doesnβt load beyond the logo, try the following:
- π Reboot to TWRP manually: pinch the power. + Loudness up.
- π If the menu opens, check for a backup and restore it.
- π§ If there is no backup, try flashing Magisk (if it was rooted) or reinstalling the firmware through Install. β Select ZIP.
If the TWRP doesn't respond to touch, the touch driver may be damaged.
- Connect the phone to your computer and copy the firmware to the deviceβs memory via MTP (if the TWRP determines the connection).
- Use it. ADB-Installation commands: Adb push rom.zip /sdcard/ adb shell twrp install /sdcard/rom.zip
If the TWRP doesn't start at all (hangs on the logo), it means the Recovery is damaged, and in this case, only flashing through fastboot or EDL will help.
π‘
If TWRP doesnβt see internal memory, try formatting the Data section in the Wipe β Format Data menu (Warning β this will delete all data!).
5. Fastboot firmware (if Mi Flash doesn't work)
If the Mi Flash Tool refuses to flash the phone, you can use manual fastboot commands. This method works even on a locked bootloader (but not on all models).
Instructions:
- Download the Fastboot firmware and unpack it.
- Open the command line (cmd) in the firmware folder.
- Connect your phone in fastboot mode and execute commands in turn: fastboot devices fastboot flash boot boot.img fastboot flash recovery.img fastboot flash system.img fastboot reboot
If you have a FAILED error (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed'), you have to lock the bootloader, in which case you either need to unlock it officially or use EDL.
π‘
Firmware via fastboot is a versatile method, but requires an unlocked bootloader on most Xiaomi models.
6.EDL mode is the last chance
If nothing works, you'll still have Emergency Download Mode (EDL) mode, which allows you to flash your phone even if you have a broken firmware or a locked bootloader, but you need to:
- π Specialist EDL-cable or ability to close test points.
- π» Mi Flash Pro or QFil (for Qualcomm devices).
- π Firmware in.mbn or Fastboot format.
How to flash through EDL:
- Put your phone in EDL mode (close test points or use a cable).
- Device Manager should appear Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Open Mi Flash Pro, select firmware and press Flash.
β οΈ Attention: Firmware through EDL drop off IMEI and the serial number on some models, and after the procedure, you may need to restore the IMEI via the engineering menu (#4636##).
If the phone is not identified in the EDL, the motherboard may have been damaged, and then you just have to carry it to the service center.
7. Hardware problems: when nothing helps
If all software methods have been tried, but the phone still doesnβt come out of the Recovery, the problem may be in the hardware:
- πΎ Damaged flash memory (eMMC/UFS). Symptoms: the phone is not sewn, gives errors when recording data.
- π The dump of the memory chip (often after falls or bumps).
- π Faulty power controller (phone not switched on or constantly restarted).
In such cases, self-repair is almost impossible - you need soldering or replacement of components.
Before the service visit:
- π Write down the phone model and serial number (usually under the battery).
- π° Check the cost of the diagnosis (sometimes it is paid).
- β οΈ Ask to save data if itβs important (not all services do).
