Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is a popular device with excellent price-to-function ratio, but many users face a problem: the default interface is in Chinese or English. Russian localization is either absent from standard firmware or hidden in the settings. In this article, we will analyze all the current methods of Russification, from official to alternative, including custom software firmware.
It's important to understand that the methods vary in complexity and risk, for example, changing the language through the Mi WiFi mobile app will take 2 minutes, and reflashing to Padavan will require technical skills and may not warranty, and we will describe each option in detail, point out the pitfalls and give recommendations for beginners.
If you just bought a router and don't want to take risks, start with the first three. They don't require any firmware intervention and are reversible. For advanced users, at the end of the article, there's a section with custom firmware that not only Russifies the interface, but adds new features (like WireGuard VPN or AdGuard Home).
Change of language through the web interface (official method)
The easiest way is to search for a hidden option in the admin panel, and in some versions of the firmware, Russian is already sewn in, but not displayed in the main menu.
- Connect to the router network via Wi-Fi or cable.
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 (or miwifi.com).
- Enter the login and password (by default β admin and password from the sticker on the router).
- Go to Advanced Settings β System β Language (Chinese version: β β ).
- In the drop-down list, find Russian (or Russian). If you don't have one, try updating your firmware (see section 3).
β οΈ Warning: Some versions of the firmware may display some of the interface in Russian and some of the interface in English after the language change. This is not a mistake, this is how the official localization works. Only custom firmware gives full Russification.
π‘
If there is no Russian in the list of languages, try changing the region to βRussiaβ or βUkraineβ β sometimes this will activate hidden localization.
2. Russification via Mi WiFi app (for smartphones)
The Mi WiFi mobile app (available for Android and iOS) often contains more recent localization than the web interface.
- π± Download the Mi WiFi app for Android or iOS.
- π Connect your smartphone to the router network.
- π Log in to the application (use the same login / password as for the web interface).
- π Go to Settings. β Language and select Russian.
- π Restart the router through the application (Reset in the device menu).
If the application does not have Russian, check:
- π App version (upgrade to the latest in the App Store or Google Play).
- π Region of your Mi Account (should be Russia or a country with Russian support).
- π Router model in application settings (sometimes) 4A Gigabit Edition is defined as a different model).
3. Updating the firmware to the version with Russian language
Xiaomi periodically releases firmware updates that add support for new languages.
- Open the router web interface (192.168.31.1).
- Go to Status β Firmware Upgrade (or β in Chinese version).
- Press Check for Updates ().
- If a new version is available, install it and restart the router.
β οΈ Warning: Do not interrupt the upgrade process or turn the router off the socket. If the update has been suspended for longer than 20 minutes, turn off the power, wait 30 seconds and turn on again - the router must recover.
Critical information: Some firmware versions reset their Wi-Fi settings (network name and password) after the update. Write them down in advance or back them up via Advanced Settings β Backup & Restore.
| Firmware version | Support for Russian | Release date | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.28.15 | Partial | March 2023 | Russian only in the mobile application |
| 2.30.47 | Complete. | June 2023 | Russification of the web interface and applications |
| 3.0.12 | Full + new features | November 2023 | Added support for IPv6 and Mesh |
4. Russification through third-party firmware (Padavan, OpenWRT)
If the official methods did not help, you just have to reflash the router on custom firmware.
- π οΈ Padavan - optimized firmware with Russian interface, support for WireGuard and advanced QoS settings.
- π§ OpenWRT is open firmware with flexible configuration, but requires manual installation of localization packages.
- π§ Breed Bootloader β an alternative loader that allows you to easily switch between firmware.
β οΈ Warning: Flashing will void the warranty and may lead to a router "bricking" if something is done wrong (4PDA, OpenWRT) and find the instructions for your review 4A Gigabit Edition (they differ in hardware version!).
Download the correct firmware version for your router revision | Backup your current settings | Prepare an Ethernet cable to connect to a PC | Make sure the router is not discharged (use the power supply) | Have a paperclip on hand to reset settings (Reset button)
-->
An example of the Padavan firmware process:
- Download the firmware from the official repository (select a file marked RT-AC1200 or R4A-G).
- Connect the router to the PC via cable, disconnect all other devices from the network.
- Press the Reset button for 10 seconds to reset.
- Open the web interface at 192.168.1.1 and download the firmware through the Firmware Upgrade section.
- Wait until the router is finished (the router will restart automatically).
What if the router does not turn on after the firmware?
5. Alternative methods of Russification
If the flashing seems too risky, there are intermediate options:
- π Using a translator in the browser: In Google Chrome or Yandex Browser, you can translate the web interface page automatically (right-click). β Translated into Russian. Minus - translation is not always accurate.
- π Guides with screenshots: Mi Community has instructions with step-by-step pictures in Russian.
- π€ Voice assistant: Some firmwares have voice control in English β you can give commands like βTurn on guest network".
For those who do not want to mess with the settings, there is another life hack: buy a router with already installed Russified firmware. Avito or Yule often sell used Xiaomi 4A Gigabit Edition with Padavan for 1,500-2000 rubles. Check the firmware version from the seller and check the work before buying.
π‘
Third-party firmware not only Russify the interface, but also add features: support VPN, Extended QoS settings, the ability to connect an external drive (Samba/FTP).
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
When Russification is done, users often face typical problems, and let's look at the most common ones:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No Russian language on the list | Outdated firmware | Update the software via Firmware Upgrade or install custom firmware |
| After the update, the settings were reset. | Reset function in new firmware | Restore settings from backup or reset the router |
| The router does not turn on after firmware | Wrong firmware version or failure | Restore via TFTP or contact the service |
| The interface is in Russian, but some items are in English. | Incomplete localization in the official firmware | Install Padavan for full Russification |
If after all the manipulations of the Russian language and not, check:
- π Router region: Some firmwares have a region-specific language (e.g., English for Europe). Change region to Russia in settings.
- π Hardware Version: The sticker on the bottom of the router contains audit information (e.g, V1, V2). It depends on the compatibility of firmware.
- π Backup availability: Before experimenting, save your current settings via Backup & Restore.
