In this article, we'll look at all the ways you can connect a repeater, from standard repeater mode to use as an access point, and how to avoid typical setup errors, starting with preparation.
Preparation for connection: what will be needed?
Before you start setting up, make sure you have everything you need. Here's the minimum set:
- 📶 Main router with Wi-Fi enabled (password and network name must be known).
- 📱 Smartphone with Mi Home app installed (available for Android and iOS).
- ⚡ 220V outlet near the weak signal area (but not further than 10 meters from the router at the setup stage).
- 🔧 Needle or paper clip to reset settings (in case of errors).
Also check that your router supports 802.11n/ac, which is a prerequisite for Range Extender Pro. If your router is older than 2015, you may need to update its firmware. The device is not compatible with older 802.11b/g standards, so when you connect to such networks, the repeater simply will not detect them.
Pay attention to the location of the socket: do not connect the amplifier near metal objects, microwaves or other sources of interference. The optimal place is halfway between the router and the dead zone, at a height of at least 1 meter from the floor. If the house is several floors, it is better to place the repeater on the landing.
Method 1: Connect via the Mi Home app (recommended)
This is the simplest and most reliable method that most users can use.
- Connect the Range Extender Pro to the outlet. Wait for the indicator on the case to flash orange (this means that the device is ready to set up).
- Open the Mi Home app on your smartphone and log in (if you haven't already). Go to Devices → Add Device (+).
- Select the Routers and Networks category, then search the Xiaomi Wi-Fi Range Extender Pro list.
- The app will suggest connecting to the repeater's time network. Go to the Wi-Fi settings on your phone and select the network. Xiaomi_Ext_XXXX (where XXXX — unique identifier of the device).
- Return to Mi Home. The app will automatically identify your main router. Select it from the list and enter the Wi-Fi password. Wait until the setup is completed (about 1-2 minutes).
Once successfully connected, the indicator on the repeater will light up blue (repeater mode) or green (access point mode). If the LED continues to flash orange, check the correct password entered or reboot both devices.

Method 2: Configure via web interface (for power users)
If you don't have access to the Mi Home app or prefer manual configuration, you can use the repeater web interface.
- Connect the Range Extender Pro to the outlet and wait for the orange indicator to flash.
- On a computer or smartphone, connect to a temporary network Xiaomi_Ext_XXXX (password not required).
- Open your browser and go to 192.168.0.1. Log in with a login and admin password (by default).
- From the menu, select Quick Setup → Repeater Mode. Enter your main network name (SSID) and password. Save settings.
The web interface also allows you to configure additional parameters:
- 🔄 Mode of operation: Repeater (repeater), AP Mode (access point) or Client (client).
- 📡 Wi-Fi channel: Manual channel selection to reduce interference (recommended channels 1, 6 or 11 for 2.4 GHz).

Xiaomi Range Extender Pro supports two main modes and the choice depends on your task:

For most home users, Repeater mode is optimal, allowing you to automatically switch between the main router and the repeater without breaking the connection (Roaming technology). However, if you need to create a separate network (for example, for guests), choose AP Mode.
⚠️ Attention: In access point mode (AP Internet speed may decrease by 30-40% because of double signal conversion (from cable to Wi-Fi) if your rate is lower 100 Mbps, the difference will be invisible.
Typical errors and their solution
Even with the right setup, there are sometimes problems, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
- 🔴 The indicator flashes orange and doesn't go blue. The reason is that the wrong Wi-Fi password or router uses an incompatible standard (e.g., only 5GHz). Solution: check the password, reboot the router and repeater, try to connect again.
- 🔴 No Internet on connected devices Reason: Repetitor does not receive IP-The router's address or the firewall locks. Solution: Turn off filtering in the router's web interface. MAC-Addresses and check if it is included DHCP.
- 🔴 The Internet speed through the repeater is lower than the direct reason: a weak signal between the router and the amplifier or an overloaded channel. Solution: move the repeater closer to the router or change the Wi-Fi channel in the settings.
If the repeater is permanently shut down, check the voltage in the socket - the device is sensitive to voltage surges. Also make sure that the router is turned off 802.11r (Fast Transition) - it can conflict with the repeater.

For maximum stability, disable Band Steering (automatic switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) on the router. The Range Extender Pro repetitor only works in the 2.4 GHz band, and this feature can cause connection breaks.
Additional settings for experienced users
If standard functions are not enough, the repeater web interface (192.168.0.1) provides advanced options:
- 📶 Transmission power: You can increase to 20 dBm (17 dBm by default), but this will reduce device life and increase power consumption.
- 🔄 WDS-bridge: allows you to connect the repeater to another repeater (cascade gain), but the speed will drop by 2 times.
