Xiaomiβs modern low-cost routers have gained popularity for their excellent price-performance ratio. The Mi Router 4A is no exception, offering users a dual-band network and stable connection. However, the initial setup of the device often raises questions for those who are facing the brand ecosystem for the first time.
The configuration process does not require a deep knowledge of network technology, but requires careful follow-up. Incorrectly connecting cables or ignoring the choice of connection protocol can lead to the fact that the Internet will not work even with proper equipment of the provider. In this article, we will examine each step in detail, from unpacking to fine-tuning security.
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary components at hand: the router itself, the power supply and the patch cord (network cable), and you will need the data to log in with your ISP if you use the PPPoE connection type or static IP. Without this information, you will not be able to complete the configuration.
Preparation of equipment and physical connection
The first step is to physically connect all the components of the network correctly. On the back of the Xiaomi Mi Router 4A device are ports that are easy to confuse for a beginner, there are power connectors and four network ports, one of which is highlighted in color or marked as WAN.
The cable from the provider (coming from the entrance or from the modem) must be inserted into the WAN port. The other three ports, often designated as LANs, are designed to connect desktop computers, game consoles or TVs through a wired connection. If you confuse the ports, the router will not be able to access the global network.
After switching the cables, plug the power supply into the socket. The indicator on the case should light up. Pay attention to the color of the glow: orange or yellow light usually means that the device is on, but the Internet is not yet configured or missing. The blue color of the indicator signals normal functioning and availability of connection.
β οΈ Note: Do not use power supplies from other devices, even if the plug fits physically. The router requires a strictly defined voltage and current strength, indicated on the sticker at the bottom of the case. Using an inappropriate adapter can cause the device to fail.
Now you need to connect your computer or smartphone to the router to start setting up, and you can do this in two ways: wirelessly on Wi-Fi or via Wi-Fi. LAN-cable. The default network name (SSID) and the password is shown on the sticker at the bottom of the device, but the new model may not have a password when first turned on.
- π Connect the provider cable to the port WAN (blue-colored).
- π» Connect your PC with a cable to any port LAN or find a Wi-Fi network.
- β‘ Turn on the power and wait for the system indicator to light up.
- π± Make sure your device has received IP-address.
βοΈ Checking the physical connection
Entrance to the router control panel
Once you successfully connect to your device, you need to get into its web interface. To do this, open any browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) on the connected gadget. IP-For most Xiaomi routers, it is 192.168.31.1 or the domain name miwifi.com.
When you first log in, the system will prompt you to select an interface language and accept the terms of the user agreement. The interface of modern MiWiFi firmware is available in Russian, which greatly simplifies navigation. If the language is not defined automatically, select it manually in the drop-down list.
The system then asks you to create an administrator password, and it's important that this password will be used to log into your router's settings in the future, not just for Wi-Fi. It's recommended that you use a complex combination of characters to protect your device from unauthorized access.
π‘
Write the created administrator password to a secure location or use the password manager. Resetting the settings to the factory will require reconfiguring the entire network from scratch.
In some cases, if the router has been previously used, it may be necessary to reset to factory settings. To do this, on the enabled device, you need to press the Reset button (usually recessed in the case) for 5-10 seconds until the indicator begins to flash orange.
Choosing the type of Internet connection
The key step in setting up is to determine the protocol your ISP uses. The Mi Router 4A has an auto-identification function, but it doesn't always work correctly, especially with Russian ISPs.
The most common type is Dynamic IP (DHCP), in which case the router automatically receives an address from the provider's equipment, and if you previously had the Internet running simply after you turned the cable on to your computer without creating a connection, choose this option.
If the provider requires authorization, the PPPoE type is selected, and the username and password issued at the conclusion of the contract are entered, often in the user's personal account on the provider's website or in a paper contract.
| Type of connection | Required data | Frequency of use |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic IP (DHCP) | Not required | High (main) |
| PPPoE | Login and password | Medium (Rostelecom, Dom.ru) |
| Static IP | IP, mask, gateway, DNS | Low (business rates) |
| L2TP / PPTP | Login, password, server | Low (obsolete) |
In rare cases, static is used. IP-The provider then provides a full set of network details: IP-address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS-This data needs to be manually entered into the appropriate fields.
What if the Internet does not appear after setting up?
Setting up a Wi-Fi wireless network
Xiaomi Mi Router 4A supports two frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This allows you to flexibly manage the connection of devices. In wireless settings, you can combine these two bands under one name or divide them.
The 2.4 GHz range provides greater coverage and better penetration through walls, but has a lower speed and is subject to interference from neighbouring networks and microwave ovens. The 5 GHz range provides high data rates but has a shorter range.
Come up with a reliable network name (SSID) Do not use personal data (address, surname) in the title. The password should be complex, contain letters of different registers, numbers and special characters. The encryption standard should be set to WPA2-PSK or WPA3, if available.
- π‘ SSID: The unique name of your network.
- π Password: Minimum 8 characters, complex combination.
- π Encryption: Only WPA2/WPA3 (don't use WEP).
- πΆ Dual-band mode: Enable the combination or create two networks.
At the bottom of the Wi-Fi settings page, there's often a settings button, and when you press it, the wireless network will restart and your device will lose connection, and you'll need to re-locate the network by the new name and enter the password you've set.
Installation and use of Mi Wi-Fi application
To manage the router from a smartphone, Xiaomi has developed a special application Mi Wi-Fi (previously known as Mi Home for some regions, but it is better to look for the router application), it is available on Google Play and the App Store.
After installing the application and logging in through the Mi Account, the system will prompt you to add a new device. If the phone is connected to the Wi-Fi router, the application will automatically detect Mi Router 4A. You will need to enter the administrator password you created when you log in through the browser.
The app features internet speed checks, connected device management (you can limit speed or block access to unwanted guests), and guest mode settings. Guest mode allows you to create a separate network for visitors, isolated from your main LAN.
It is also convenient to check for firmware updates through the application, the system will notify you of the release of a new version of the software, which may contain security fixes and improve the stability of the work.
Advanced settings and security
For advanced users, the Advanced Settings section is available, where you can change the router's mode, for example, switch it to access point or repeater mode, but for standard use, you should leave the Router mode.
Security is an important aspect, and the settings section recommends that you disable Cloud Service if you donβt plan to use remote management over the Internet, which will reduce the risk of potential vulnerabilities.
You should also pay attention to the setting. DNS. Use of public use DNS-servers such as Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) can speed up network response and bypass some ISP locks.
β οΈ Note: Auto updates are useful, but sometimes new versions may contain errors. If the router is stable, do not rush to update on the day of the release of the new version, it is better to wait for feedback from other users.
Remember to reboot the device periodically. Electronics tend to accumulate errors in RAM during long periods of time without interruption. Software reboot once a week prolongs the life of the device.
π‘
Regularly restarting and updating the firmware are two of the main rules for maintaining stable operation of any network equipment.
