What is Xiaomi Mi Router 4A and why is it chosen?
The dual-band router Xiaomi Mi Router 4A has become one of the most popular solutions for home networks due to the balance of price, performance and functionality. This device supports Wi-Fi 5 standards (802.11ac) with a maximum speed of up to 1167 Mbit / s (300 Mbit / s at 2.4 GHz + 867 Mbit / s at 5 GHz), equipped with four external antennas and a MediaTek MT7628DA processor with a clock frequency of 580 MHz. The feature of the model is firmware based on MiWiFi ROM, which offers advanced control capabilities via a mobile application.
The main advantages of the Mi Router 4A are stable operation with a large number of connected devices (up to 64 clients at a time), IPv6 support, built-in firewall and the ability to create a guest network. However, many users face difficulties in initial configuration, especially if they have previously used routers from other brands. In this article, we will discuss all the steps from physical connection to fine network optimization.
Importantly, the Mi Router 4A has two modifications: the Gigabit Edition (with a 1000 Mbps port) and the standard version (100 Mbps ports). The instructions are suitable for both, but the speed characteristics will differ. Also the device supports OpenWRT firmware, but this is a topic for a separate article - here we will focus on the standard functionality.
Preparation for the setup: what will be needed?
Before you start setting up, make sure you have everything you need:
- ๐ฆ Router delivery kit: Xiaomi Mi Router itself 4A, power supply, network cable (patch-cord) and instructions.
- ๐ฑ Smartphone or tablet with Mi Wi-Fi app installed (available for Android and iOS).
- ๐ป Computer or laptop (optional, but recommended for advanced settings via web interface).
- ๐ก Data from the provider: connection type (PPPoE, DHCP, Static IP), login/password (if required), VLAN ID (if necessary).
If you connect a router to an existing network (like a repeater), you will also need a password from the main Wi-Fi network. Note: Mi Router 4A does not support Mesh out of the box mode โ this requires OpenWRT firmware or special software from Xiaomi for compatible models.
โ ๏ธ Note: If your provider uses a binding MAC-Please specify in advance if you need to clone. MAC-The address of the old router. 4A This feature is available in the Settings section โ Internet โ Cloning MAC.
Also check if your plan supports speeds above 100 Mbps. If not, the difference between Gigabit and the standard version of the router will be invisible.
Connecting the router to the network: a step-by-step process
Start by physically connecting the device:
- Place the router in the center of the room, on a hill (for example, on a cabinet), away from metal objects and household appliances that create interference (microwaves, wireless phones).
- Connect the power supply to the router and plug it into the socket. Wait for the power indicator to light up in blue (this means that the device is ready to set up).
- With the help of a network cable (includes) connect WAN-router port (usually highlighted in blue) with provider port on wall or modem.
- If you have a fiber optic connection, first connect the cable to the ONU-terminal (optical modem) and then connect ONU s WAN-router port via Ethernet.
After the connection, wait until the router receives IP-ISP address, it may take up to 2-3 If the Internet indicator doesn't light up, check it out:
- ๐ Correctness of cable connection (WAN-The port should be connected to the provider, not the computer).
- ๐ Restart the router by holding the Reset reset button on the back for 10 seconds.
- ๐ Call the provider to check if the connection is blocked MAC-address.
If the router is successfully connected to the Internet, the WAN indicator will light up in yellow or green (depending on the model), and you can now start setting up Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi settings on Xiaomi Mi Router 4A: network name, password and channels
For basic Wi-Fi settings, it is most convenient to use the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application. Download it from the App Store or Google Play, register (or log in via your Xiaomi account) and follow the instructions:
- Open the app and click Add Device โ Router.
- Select Mi Router 4A from the list. The app will automatically find the router on the network.
- Give me the name of the network (SSID) both-band (2.4G and 5G). We recommend using different names, for example: MyHome_2G and MyHome_5G, easy-to-distinguish networks.
- Set a strong password (minimum 8 characters, using letters, numbers and special characters) and avoid simple combinations like 12345678 or qwerty.
- Select WPA2-PSK (or WPA3-PSK if supported by your devices) security mode.
To optimize network speed and stability, we recommend manually configuring Wi-Fi channels:
| Range. | Recommended channel | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | 1, 6 or 11 | These channels don't overlap. Use a Wi-Fi analyzer (like Wi-Fi Analyzer) to pick the least loaded one. |
| 5 GHz | 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161 | In Russia, channels 36-48 and 149-165 (up to 200 mW) are allowed to be used. Channels 149-165 are usually less loaded. |
| 5 GHz (DFS) | 52-64, 100-140 | These channels can be used, but the router will periodically check for radars (may cause short-term cliffs). |
To change the channels in the app:
- Go to Settings. โ Wi-Fi.
- Select the range (2.4G or 5G).
- Click on the additional settings โ Channel and select the desired one.
- Save the changes and restart the router.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If some devices have stopped connecting after a 5GHz channel change, check if they support this range.Old smartphones, smart light bulbs and some laptops only run at 2.4GHz.
๐ก
If you have many Wi-Fi-connected devices, turn on Band Steering in your router settings, which automatically distributes customers between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for optimal performance.
Internet Connection Configuration: PPPoE, DHCP and Static IP
The type of Internet connection depends on your provider, and most of the time, one of three options is PPPoE, DHCP (dynamic IP), or Static IP. Check this information in the contract or with technical support.
To set up the connection:
- Open the Mi Wi-Fi app and go to Settings โ Internet.
- Select the connection type: PPPoE: enter the login and password provided by the provider. VLAN ID (For example, for Rostelecom it is often 10 or 835). DHCP: Usually does not require additional settings โ IP-The address is automatically issued. IP: manually IP-address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS-server.
Save.
To speed up access to the site, we recommend using alternatives. DNS-servers instead of the standard ones from the provider:
- ๐ Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
- ๐ Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1. and 1.0.0.1.
- ๐ Yandex DNS: 77.88.8.8 and 77.88.8.1
To change the DNS to Mi Router 4A:
- In the app, go to Settings โ Internet โ DNS.
- Turn off the option to get DNS automatically.
