Forgot your home Wi-Fi password and Xiaomi's router doesn't want to show it? This is a familiar situation, especially if the network has been set up for a long time or the password was automatically entered via a smartphone. Fortunately, you can get back to the network in a number of ways, from viewing saved passwords on devices to resetting router settings. In this article, we will discuss all the working methods for Mi Router 4A/4C/4Q, AX1800/AX3000/AX3600 and other popular routers of the brand.
It's important to understand that if you haven't changed your default settings, you can have a password on the sticker underneath the device, but if you've already reconfigured the network, you'll have to use alternative methods. We'll look at options for both users with access to the admin panel and those who have forgotten login data, and we'll also talk about how to avoid similar problems in the future, for example, by backing up settings through the Mi Wi-Fi app.
1. Check the standard password on the router sticker
The easiest way is to look at the factory data on the device itself, and there is a sticker on the bottom or back of most Xiaomi routers, including:
- π€ SSID (Network name β usually starts with Xiaomi_ or MiWiFi_;
- π Wi-Fi password β designated as Password, Wi-Fi Key or Wi-Fi Key PIN;
- π Address of the admin panel β most often 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com;
- π§ Login/password for login β by default it is admin.
If the sticker is erased or not (for example, on used devices), try the standard combinations for Xiaomi:
- π’ Password: 1234567890 or last 8 digits MAC-address (indicated on the sticker);
- π’ For Mi Router models 3/3G/4: The password may match SSID prefixed Xiaomi_.
β οΈ Note: If the router has already been configured, the factory password will not work.
2. Viewing the saved password on connected devices
If your smartphone, laptop or tablet has already connected to this network, you can extract the password from the data you've stored. Let's look at the different operating systems.
π± Android (including Xiaomi smartphones)
On devices with MIUI (or pure Android 10+), the password can be viewed as follows:
- Open the Settings. β Wi-Fi;
- Tapping by the name of your network;
- Choose to share or QR-code;
- Enter. PIN-code or fingerprint;
- The password will be displayed under QR-code.
Some firmware may have different paths. If you don't have the option to share, use the WiFi Password Viewer app (root rights required).
π» Windows 10/11
On a Windows computer:
- Open the settings β Network and Internet β Wi-Fi;
- Click on Known Network Management;
- Select your network and click on Properties.
- In the section Security settings tick Display entered signs.
π macOS / iOS
On a MacBook or iPhone:
- π₯οΈ macOS: Open the Programs β Utilities. β The keychain, find the network name and double-click on it;
- π± iOS: Without jailbreak, you can not view the password, but you can share it through Settings β Wi-Fi β β β Password (only for iOS 16)+).
π‘
If you have an old smartphone that was connected to this network, donβt rush to reset it. Stored Wi-Fi passwords can be transferred to a new device through a backup (for example, in Google Account or Mi Cloud).
3. Enter the router admin panel via the browser
If you have access to the router's settings, you can view the Wi-Fi password in the web interface.
- Connect to the router via cable (or via Wi-Fi if the device is already on the network);
- Open your browser and enter 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com;
- Enter the login and password (by default) admin/admin, unless changed);
- Go to Wi-Fi β Security Settings (or Wireless β Wireless Security for English firmware).
If you do not remember the entry data:
- π Check the sticker on the router β sometimes the login / password is listed there;
- π Try resetting the admin panel password via Mi Home (if the router is linked to your Xiaomi account);
- π§ Use emergency access: Hold the Reset button for 10 seconds to reset to factory settings (password will become standard).
β οΈ Note: After resetting, all connected devices will be disconnected from the network, and personal settings (such as parental controls or guest Wi-Fi) will be erased.
Save current settings (export via admin panel)
Write it down. MAC-Linked device addresses (if filtering is used)
Disconnect important devices from the network (to avoid connection breakage)
Prepare the cable to connect to the router after resetting-->
4.Use of Mi Wi-Fi (Mi Home) application
The official Mi Wi-Fi app (or Mi Home for smart devices) allows you to remotely control your router if it is linked to your Xiaomi account.
- Open the application and select your router;
- Go to Wi-Fi Settings β Password;
- Enter the password from your Mi Account to confirm it;
- The password will be displayed in the Current Password field (you can copy it).
If the router is not linked to the account:
- π± Connect to your network (even without the internet);
- π In the Mi Wi-Fi app, select Add Device β router;
- π Follow the instructions for binding (scanning will be required) QR-router-sticker).
Important: If a router was purchased by a used router, the previous owner could not untie it from his account, in which case you can only restore access through resetting.
What if Mi Wi-Fi canβt see the router?
5. Reset router to factory settings
If other methods fail, it's a hard reset, which will bring the router back to the "out of the box" state, including the standard Wi-Fi password.
- Find the Reset button on the back of the router (can be signed as WPS/Reset).
- Take a paper clip or toothpick and press the button, holding it for 10-15 seconds;
- Indicators on the router will blink and go out - this is a signal of a successful reset;
- Wait 1-2 minutes for the device to restart.
After discharge:
- π Connect to a network with a name Xiaomi_XXXX (password - from the sticker);
- π Go to the admin panel at miwifi.com;
- π§ Reconfigure the router (we recommend changing the standard password to a more reliable one).
| Model router | Standard. IP-address | Default login/password | Reset retention time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Router 4A/4C | 192.168.31.1 | admin/admin | 10 seconds. |
| AX1800/AX3000 | miwifi.com | admin/password from the sticker | 15 seconds. |
| Mi Router 3G | 192.168.1.1 | root/admin | 5 seconds |
β οΈ Note: On some models (e.g, AX3600) Reset can take up to 30 seconds. Do not release the button until the indicators start flashing in non-standard mode (for example, yellow).
6. Alternative methods (for advanced users)
If standard methods don't work, you can try more complex ones, they require technical skills and they're not always safe.
π₯οΈ Connection to Telnet/SSH
Some Xiaomi firmware allows you to access the router console.
- Install PuTTY or Termux (for Android)
- Connect to the router at 192.168.31.1 on port 22 (SSH) or 23 (Telnet);
- Enter the login/password (by default) root/admin);
- Follow the command: cat /etc/config/wireless | grep 'key' This will display the current Wi-Fi password.
π§ Router reflashing
The last method is to install custom firmware (like OpenWRT or Padavan), which gives you complete control of the device, but:
- β οΈ Risk of βbrickingβ of the router (turning into a βbrick");
- β οΈ Loss of warranty (if it is still valid);
- β οΈ Skills required to work with TFTP console.
For firmware instructions, look for 4PDA or OpenWRT forums, indicating the exact router model.
π‘
Before using alternative methods, be sure to back up your current router settings through the admin panel (System Tools β Backup).
7.How to avoid losing your password in the future
To avoid the problem again, follow the following simple rules:
- π Save your password in your password manager (e.g. Bitwarden or Google Password Manager);
- π± Export router settings after initial setup (the admin panel has a backup option);
- π Link the router to your Mi Account β this will allow you to manage it through Mi Home;
- π·οΈ Do not remove the sticker from the router β it contains critical information;
- π Use it. QR-Guests connection code (Mi Wi-Fi has a function to generate temporary access).
If you have multiple users in your family, create a guest network with a separate password, which will make it easier to connect new devices and protect the main network.
