When access to the home network control panel is lost, it comes as a surprise: users often forget previously changed credentials or buy used equipment without documentation. In the Xiaomi ecosystem, access can be restored in several proven ways that do not require deep programming knowledge.
Modern routers of this brand have strong protection, but there is a mechanism for disaster recovery. Factory settings contain standard combinations that are valid before the first authorization of the administrator. If you did not change the data yourself, they may still be relevant today.
It's important to understand the difference between a Wi-Fi password and a router's web interface key, and users often confuse these concepts by entering incorrect data in the browser authorization field, and we'll take both options apart and explain how to proceed if neither of the standard methods worked.
Search for standard data on the device body
The first step should always be to physically inspect the equipment, and most Mi Router and Redmi Router models have a sticker on the back or bottom, and that's where the manufacturer specifies the unique data for the original network configuration.
Look carefully at the label. You're interested in fields labeled Password or Key. In some cases, a bundle of login and password is used to access the admin panel, often admin and admin, but modern models may require customized code that is prescribed in production.
- π Find a sticker at the bottom of the router's case.
- π Look for the Password or Key field to access Wi-Fi.
- π Check for a standardized IP-addresses, usually 192.168.31.1.
- π± Make sure your device is connected to the router network via cable or wireless connection.
If the sticker is erased or damaged, this method will not help, and the data may not be relevant if the previous owner has already set up and changed the standard values, in which case a deeper intervention in the system will be required.
β οΈ Note: If the label is indicated QR-It's a code that can be scanned by a smartphone camera, often leading to a full page or connecting to the network without manually entering characters.
Log in to the web interface via the browser
To manage network traffic and security settings, you need to access the web interface. Open any browser on a computer or phone connected to the router. Enter the standard gateway address, which most often looks like 192.168.31.1 or the domain name miwifi.com, into the address bar.
After going to the address, the system will request authorization. If the standard combinations (admin/admin) do not fit, and you did not change them, it may be that the router requires a password to be set the first time you log in, in which case the field may be empty or require a new character combination to be created.
The interface can be in Chinese or English, depending on the firmware version. Mi Account is often used to log in. If the router is linked to someone else's account, you can't log in without reset. This is a security measure that prevents unauthorized people from remotely hijacking the device.
β οΈ Note: When entering data, consider the letter register. Xiaomi router security system is case sensitive, so Password and Password will be perceived as different access keys.
Use of the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application
An alternative and often more convenient way to manage is the official Mi Wi-Fi app (or Xiaomi Home), which allows you not only to change your settings, but also sometimes display your current Wi-Fi password in text form if your phone is already connected to the network.
Download the app from the official Google Play or App Store. After registering or logging in to your account, add the device. If the router is already set up and linked to your account, access will open automatically without asking for an additional password.
βοΈ Setup through the application
Inside the app, go to your network settings, and you can often find "Show password" or something similar that's hidden with asterisks, and if you click on it, you'll see a current combination of characters that you can copy or rewrite.
This method only works if the router was not reset to factory settings by the previous user and is tied to your account, otherwise the application will suggest configuring the device as new, which will require a reset.
Resetting settings to factory state
If no login method works, the radical but effective method is Hard Reset, which will return the router to the state it was in when it left the assembly line, and all user settings, including passwords, will be deleted.
On the body of the device, find a recessed hole that says Reset, which is usually located next to LAN ports or a power connector, and you'll need a thin object, such as a paper clip or a toothpick, to activate the function.
Hold the Reset button 5-10 seconds until the indicator flashesPress and hold the button inside the hole. The indicator on the case should start flashing orange or yellow. After that, the button can be released. The recovery process will take about 1-2 minutes, after which the router will restart.
What happens when you dump?
Once you reboot, you can log in using the data from the sticker on the case, which is a guaranteed way to take back control of the device, but it requires reconfiguring the Internet connection.
Table of standard access parameters
For ease of information, we have collected basic data that are used by default in different hardware lines. Please note that firmware may be updated, and the behavior of the device may vary slightly.
| Model router | IP-address | Login by default | Password default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Router 3G / 4A | 192.168.31.1 | admin | (Not/Specified at First Entry) |
| Redmi Router AC2100 | 192.168.31.1 | admin | (Not/Specified at First Entry) |
| Mi Router AX3600 | 192.168.31.1 | admin | (Not/Specified at First Entry) |
| Older versions (Global) | 192.168.1.1 | admin | admin |
If standard IP-The address won't open, check your computer's network card settings (DHCP). In rare cases, the address may have been changed earlier, and then it can only be known through the command line.
π‘
Use the command ipconfig (Windows) or ifconfig (macOS/Linux) in the terminal to find the address "Default Gateway" (Default Gateway).
Resetting after resetting
After a successful reset and login to the control panel, you need to reconfigure the Internet. Choose the type of connection your ISP uses, most often PPPoE (requires a login and password from the contract) or Dynamic IP (automatically).
Create a new, strong password for administration and Wi-Fi, and use complex combinations of letters and numbers to protect the network from unauthorized access by neighbors, and do not use simple sequences like "12345678."
Save the new settings. The router can reboot. Then connect all your devices using a new security key. If the Internet doesn't show up, check that the data you entered from the provider is correct.
π‘
Once reset, the Xiaomi router has no internet access until you enter the provider's authorization data into the web interface. Without this step, the network will only work locally.
In some cases, the provider links the Internet to the MAC-If the Internet doesn't work right away, you might need to clone it. MAC-computer address in router settings or call the provider's technical support to reset the link.
