Forgot your Wi-Fi password or want to update it for security? Xiaomi routers allow you to change the network key in several ways - through a web interface, a Mi WiFi mobile application or a hardware reset. In this manual, we will analyze each method in detail, taking into account the features of popular models: Mi Router 4A, 4C, AX3600, AX6000 and others.
Important: If you don't remember the current password from the router's administrator panel, go straight to the factory reset section, which is the only way to get access back.
The password change process takes no more than 5 minutes, but requires attention to detail. For example, a new key must contain a minimum of 8 characters and include letters, numbers or special signs. Also note that after changing the password, all connected devices (smartphones, laptops, smart appliances) will be automatically disconnected from the network - they will have to reconnect manually.

1.Preparation: What to Know Before Changing Your Password
Before changing your password on your Xiaomi router, check a few key points. First, make sure your device is connected to the router β either by cable (via a LAN port) or by Wi-Fi. If you forget your password from the network, but remember the login data to the admin panel, connect via an Ethernet cable (it usually comes with a bundle).
Second, you need to have a new password that meets the security requirements.
- π Length from 8 to 63 characters.
- π Contain capital and lowercase letters, numbers or signs (!@#$% etc.).
- π« Do not use personal information (dates of birth, names, addresses).
- π Do not repeat old passwords (Xiaomi routers remember the last 5 keys).
If your router supports Wi-Fi 6 (AX3600, AX6000 and later), the new password will automatically apply to both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks.
Finally, write down the new password on paper or save it to a password manager (like Google Password Manager or KeePass) that eliminates the need to reset settings if you forget it.

Method 1: Change passwords through the web interface (192.168.31.1)
The most reliable method is to use the router's administrator panel, so you don't need to install additional programs, just a browser on a computer or smartphone.
Step instructions:
- Open your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- Enter your login login and password. This is the default login: π€ Login: admin π Password: Admin or the one you set before.

βοΈ Checklist before changing password
β οΈ Note: If the page does not open after entering 192.168.31.1, check: π Connection to the router (indicator) LAN or the Wi-Fi should be on fire). π Correctness of address (sometimes 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 is used). π Absence VPN browser-based proxy.

3. Method 2: Change password through the Mi WiFi app
If you have a smartphone on Android or iOS, you can use the official Mi WiFi application. This method is convenient for quickly changing your password without a computer.
How to do this:
- π± Install Mi WiFi from Google Play or App Store.
- π Connect your smartphone to the network of the Xiaomi router (over Wi-Fi or through a cable with an adapter) USB-CβEthernet).
- π Open the app and sign in with your Xiaomi account (or create one if you donβt already).
- π οΈ Go to the section Router Management β Wi-Fi settings.
- π Enter a new password in the Network Password field and save the changes.
Mi WiFi also allows you to manage your guest network, set up parental controls, and check connected devices, but you still need a web interface to change your administrator password (access to 192.168.31.1).
β οΈ Note: If you previously linked a router to a Xiaomi account, but forgot the login details, restore access via account.xiaomi.com. Without this, the Mi WiFi application will not be able to connect to the device.
π‘
If the Mi WiFi app does not find the router, try to turn off mobile Internet on your smartphone - sometimes networks conflict.

Method 3: Reset the router to factory settings (if you forgot the password)
If you don't remember the Wi-Fi password or the login data to the admin panel, the only way out is to completely reset the router, which will bring back all the factory settings, including the network name (Xiaomi_XXXX) and password (indicated on the sticker at the bottom of the device).
How to reset the Xiaomi router:
- π Turn the router on (power indicator should burn).
- π Find the Reset button on the back (usually recessed in the case).
- π Take a paper clip or toothpick, press and hold the Reset button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing.
- π Release the button and wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).
After discharge:
- πΆ The network name will return to the factory name (for example, Xiaomi_ABCD).
- π The password will be displayed on the sticker under the router (usually an 8-digit combination).
- π₯οΈ Login and password for entering the Administrator panel will become admin/admin.
β οΈ Note: Reset removes all settings, including: π‘ PPPoE settings (if you have a login/password authorization provider). π Parental Control Rules and Device Blacklists. πΆ Guest network settings and traffic prioritization (QoS) Prepare data from the provider in advance (login, password, connection type) to quickly restore Internet access.

| Method | Required. | Time. | Suitable for | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web interface (192.168.31.1) | Computer/smartphone, cable or Wi-Fi | 2-3 minutes | All models (Mi Router 4A, AX6000, etc.) | You need to know the current password of the administrator |
| Mi WiFi appendix | Smartphone, Xiaomi account | 3-5 minutes | Mi WiFi-enabled models (AX3600, 4C) | It does not work without an account link |
| Hardware reset (Reset button) | Paperclip, router access. | 5 minutes (+ setup from scratch) | Any model you want. | Remove all settings, requires reconfiguration |

6. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
When you change your password on Xiaomi routers, users often face typical problems, and let's look at the most common ones and how to solve them.
Mistake 1: After changing the password, the Internet disappears.
- π Reason: Router canβt connect to provider due to resetting PPPoE settings (if you were doing hardware reset).
- π οΈ Solution: Go to Settings β Internet and re-enter data from the provider (login, password, connection type).
Error 2: The new password is not suitable when connecting devices.
- π Reason: Misprint when entering or conflict of characters (for example, Russian layout instead of English layout).
- π Solution: Check the letter register and keyboard language. Try entering the password on another device.
Error 3: Page 192.168.31.1 does not open.
- π Reason: Router has another IP-Address or conflict with other devices on the network.
- π Solution: Find out the relevant IP via the command line: ipconfig (for Windows) ifconfig (for Windows) macOS/Linux) Search for Default Gateway β This is your routerβs address.
π‘
If your devices don't connect to Wi-Fi after you change your password, first check if they're using Auto Connection to hidden networks, and sometimes they try to connect to an old name for a network that doesn't exist anymore.

7 Additional security settings after changing password
Simply changing your password is not enough to protect your network completely, and we recommend you to follow a few more steps:
1. Change the administrator login and password
By default, many Xiaomi routers use admin/admin to access settings. This is not secure! Go to Settings β System β Administrator password and set a new one.
2. Update the router's firmware
Outdated software may contain vulnerabilities. Check the update in Settings β Update of firmware. Monthly security patches are available for the AX3600 and AX6000.
3. Set up a guest network
If you have frequent visitors, create a separate network for them:
- π‘ Go to Settings. β Wi-Fi β Guest network.
- π Set a different password (for example, guest1234).
- β±οΈ Limit network time (for example, 6 hours).
4. Turn on attack protection
In the Settings section β Security activate:
- π‘οΈ Filtration MAC-Addresses (allow connection only to known devices).
- π« DDoS protection (prevents router congestion).
- π Automatic update (to avoid missing critical patches).
