Forgot your home Wi-Fi password or want to update it for security? Xiaomi routers (including the popular Mi Router 4A, AX3000, AX6000 and others) allow you to change your wireless password through the web interface or the Mi WiFi mobile application. In this article, we will analyze all the ways - from a standard change through the admin panel to resetting if access is lost.
The process takes no more than 5 minutes, but requires attention to detail: an incorrectly selected security mode (for example, an outdated WEP instead of WPA2-PSK) can lead to problems with connecting devices. And if a used router was purchased, you may have to first reset it to factory settings. We covered all scenarios - choose the appropriate one and follow the step-by-step instructions.
Preparation: What to Know Before Changing Your Password
Before changing your password, make sure that:
- π Xiaomi router is powered and powered on (power indicator lit blue or orange).
- πΆ Your device (PC, smartphone, tablet) is connected to the network of this router via cable or Wi-Fi.
- π You have the current data to log into the admin panel (by default β admin login, password β on the router or admin sticker).
If you don't remember the login details, you'll have to perform a hardware reset (section 5). Also check if the router's case has a factory data sticker -- sometimes the admin password is listed there in the Password or Admin Password field.
Important! After changing the Wi-Fi password, all connected devices (smartphones, laptops, smart appliances) will be turned off. Prepare a list of gadgets that will need to be reconnected. Pay special attention to smart devices (Yeelight lamps, Xiaomi cameras, etc.) - they may need to reconnect through the manufacturer's application.
Method 1: Change passwords through web interfaces (192.168.31.1)
The most reliable method is to use a browser on a PC or smartphone, suitable for all Xiaomi models, including the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition and the AX9000.
- Open your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com. Press Enter.
- Enter the username and password of the admin panel (by default, admin/admin or see the sticker on the router). If the data does not fit, go to the section about the reset.
- From the main menu, select Wi-Fi β Wi-Fi settings (or Wireless Settings in English).
- Find the Wi-Fi Password field, enter a new password (recommended length is 8-20 characters, using letters, numbers and characters).
- In Security, select WPA2-PSK (or WPA3-PSK if supported). Do not use WEP, which is outdated and insecure.
- Save the changes with the Apply button. The router will restart (it will take ~1 minute).
The new password contains at least 8 characters |

Critical detail: if you use the Mesh network (multiple Xiaomi routers on the same network), change the password only on the main node. Secondary nodes synchronize settings automatically.
Method 2: Change passwords through the Mi WiFi app
The Mi WiFi mobile app (available for Android and iOS) makes it easier to manage your router, but has limitations, such as some models (such as the Mi Router 4Q) that donβt support full functionality through the app.
- Download Mi WiFi from Google Play or App Store.
- Connect your smartphone to the network of the Xiaomi router over Wi-Fi.
- Open the app and log in to Xiaomiβs account (if youβve previously linked your router). If the router is new, click Add Device and follow the instructions.
- In the main menu, select your router, then go to Wi-Fi Settings.
- Click on the current network name (SSID) and select Change password.
- Enter a new password, confirm and save it, and the app will prompt you to reconnect to the network.
β οΈ Note: If after changing the password through the Wi-Fi application stopped working, check if the settings are not lost DHCP. In manual mode, set the range IP-addresses (e.g. 192.168.31.100β192.168.31.200) in the web interface.
The Mi WiFi app also allows you to:
- π View the list of connected devices.
- π Update router firmware.
- π‘οΈ Set up parental control.
Method 3: Using Mi Home (for smart home routers)
Some Xiaomi models (such as the Mi Router AX3600) are integrated into the Mi Home ecosystem, and if your router is connected to your Xiaomi account, you can change your password through this application:
- Open Mi Home and select your router from the list of devices.
- Go to Settings β Wi-Fi settings.
- Click on the current network name and select Change password.
- Enter a new password and save it. The router will reboot.
Note that not all router settings are available in Mi Home. For a fine configuration (such as DMZ or Port Forwarding), use the web interface.
Method 4: Reset the router to factory settings (if you forgot the admin password)
If you don't remember the login data, you'll have to do a hard reset, which will bring the router back to factory settings, including:
- π Wi-Fi name and password (to become standard, for example, Xiaomi_XXXX passwordless or with default password).
- π Login/password of the admin (admin/admin).
- βοΈ All user settings (port forwarding, parental controls, etc.).
Resetting instructions:
- Find the Reset button on the back of the router (usually recessed in the case).
- Take a paper clip or toothpick, press and hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing yellow.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).
- Connect to the router network (name will be available) Xiaomi_XXXX) and enter the admin panel at the address 192.168.31.1 login/password admin.
β οΈ Warning: After reset, all devices will be disconnected from Wi-Fi. If you have static setup IP-Addressing on some gadgets (for example, on Xiaomi) TV), It's gonna have to configure again.

Recommendations for choosing a reliable Wi-Fi password
Weak passwords are the main reason for home network hacking.
| Password type | Example | Level of security | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple (not recommended) | 12345678 | β Very low. | It's broken in seconds. |
| Medium. | XiaomiRouter2026 | β οΈ Medium. | Vulnerable to dictionary attacks. |
| Difficult (recommended) | k7#pL9@mQ!2vN | β High-pitched | Random combination of symbols. |
| Password phrase | Cat!Flying $on the plane7 | β β Very tall. | Easy to remember, hard to pick up. |
Use password generators (such as Google Chrome or 1Password) if you can't come up with a reliable combination.
- π Dates of birth, names, names of pets.
- π’ Sequences (11111111, qwerty).
- π± Repeat passwords from other services.
π‘
Store your Wi-Fi password in a password manager (like Bitwarden or KeePass) so you donβt lose it and can easily share it with guests via temporary access.
Frequent mistakes and their solution
When you change your password, you're faced with a common problem, and here's how to fix it:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| It does not open 192.168.31.1 | Wrong. IP-router address or connection problems. | Check the cable connection. In the command line, type ipconfig (Windows) or ifconfig (macOS/Linux) and find the Default Gateway. Try miwifi.com instead of IP. |
| After changing the password, Wi-Fi does not work. | Incompatible security protocol or settings failure. | Check that you have WPA2-PSK (not WEP) selected. Reboot the router with the power button. Reset the settings and reconfigure. |
| I can't go into the admin after the reset. | Incorrect login/password or browser caches old data. | Try a different browser or incognito mode. Make sure you type in admin/admin (registration is important!). Check the sticker on the router - sometimes the password is unique. |
If the Xiaomi router after changing the password begins to restart or slow down on its own, the reason may be:
- π Network overload (many connected devices).
- π Outdated firmware (update in the System section) β Update of the PO).
- β‘ Unstable power supply (try another power supply).

If after all the manipulations Wi-Fi does not work, check whether the router is on the bridge mode (Bridge), in which case the Wi-Fi distribution is turned off automatically.
