Why itβs important to change your Wi-Fi password on Xiaomi
Xiaomi routers are among the most popular devices for home networking thanks to the combination of price, performance and easy management through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application. However, even the most reliable technology requires attention to security. If you never changed your Wi-Fi password after buying a router or did it more than a year ago, your network is vulnerable to hacking, connecting neighbors or even using it for illegal activities.
Changing your password on a Xiaomi router is not only a way to protect against unauthorized access, but also a way to optimize your network. For example, if you notice that the Internet has slowed down for no apparent reason, you may have had a third party device connect to your Wi-Fi. And if you recently sold or gave someone an old smartphone that was connected to your network, changing your password is a must-have.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to change the password on Xiaomi routers (including Mi Router 4A, AX3000, AX6000 and others), as well as how to avoid typical errors and what to do if you forget the current password from the admin panel.
Preparing for a password change: what you need to know
Before you start changing your password, make sure you have everything you need:
- π± Network Access Device: A smartphone, tablet or computer connected to a Xiaomi Wi-Fi router (or via an Ethernet cable).
- π Current login data β login and password from the router administrator panel (by default this is often the case) admin/admin or indicated on the device sticker).
- π± Mi Wi-Fi app (for convenience) β download from Google Play or App Store.
- β‘ Backup power β if the router is connected via a UPS or laptop with a charged battery to avoid crashing when setting up.
If you don't remember the login data to the admin panel, don't panic, you can reset it to factory settings, but keep in mind that this will delete all user settings, including the network name (SSID) and current Wi-Fi password.
β οΈ Note: If you use a Xiaomi router in conjunction with a provider that links access to the site MAC-to the address of the device (for example, Rostelecom or Beeline), resetting may require re-assignment.
Method 1: Change passwords through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application
The easiest and most intuitive way to change your Wi-Fi password on a Xiaomi router is to use the official Mi Wi-Fi app, which is suitable for most models, including the Mi Router 4C, AX1800 and AX3600.
- Open the Mi Wi-Fi app and connect to your Wi-Fi network (if not already connected).
- On the home screen, tap your router icon (usually displayed at the top of the screen).
- Go to the Wi-Fi settings section (or Wi-Fi settings if you have an English version of the app).
- Select the Wi-Fi Password (or Wi-Fi Password).
- Enter the current password (for confirmation), then a new password (twice).
- Click Save or Save. The router will reboot and all devices will be disconnected from the network.
After changing your password, you will need to reconnect all your gadgets (smartphones, laptops, smart speakers) to Wi-Fi using a new security key. Please note that some devices (such as Xiaomi Smart Home or Redmi smartphones) can store network data in the cloud and automatically connect after rebooting the router.
The new password contains at least 8 characters.
Capital and lowercase letters, numbers or symbols are used.
Password does not match network name (SSID)
You have memorized or saved a new password in a safe place.-->
β οΈ Note: If some devices cannot connect to Wi-Fi after changing their password, check to see if they have automatic open network connectivity enabled (e.g., on Android in Wi-Fi settings.
Method 2: Change password through the routerβs web interface
If you canβt use a mobile app (like a Windows or macOS computer), you can change your password through the routerβs web interface, a method that works on all Xiaomi models, including older ones.
To start, open any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and follow the following steps:
- In the address bar, enter IP-The address of your router. 192.168.31.1 or 192.168.0.1. If these addresses do not work, you can find out the correct one through the command line: ipconfig (for Windows) netstat -rn (for macOS/Linux) Search for the main gateway (Default Gateway).
- Enter your login and password to log into the admin panel. This is often admin/admin by default, but if you've changed them before, use current data.
- After successful login, go to the Wi-Fi or Wireless section (in English, Wireless).
- Find the Wi-Fi Password field and enter a new security key, and we recommend using a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
- Save the changes and wait for the router to restart (usually takes 1-2 minutes).
On Xiaomi routers with Chinese firmware, the path to password settings may be different: look for the tab (Wireless Settings) β (Wi-Fi Security).
| Model router | IP-default | Default login/password |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Router 4A | 192.168.31.1 | admin/admin |
| Xiaomi AX3000 | 192.168.31.1 | It's on the sticker. |
| Xiaomi AX6000 | 192.168.31.1 or 192.168.0.1 | Unique password on the body |
| Mi Router 3G/4C | 192.168.31.1 | admin/admin |
π‘
If you forgot the password from the admin panel, but remember the current Wi-Fi password, try connecting to the router through the Mi Wi-Fi app β sometimes it allows you to change the login data without completely resetting.
Method 3: Reset the router to factory settings (if you forgot the password)
If you can't log into the Xiaomi router's administrator panel because of a lost password, the only way out is to reset the device to factory settings. This will remove all user settings, including the network name (SSID), Wi-Fi password and port settings. Here's how to do this:
- Find the Reset button on the routerβs case (usually it is recessed in the case and signed by RST).
- Take a paper clip or toothpick, press and hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators on the router start flashing.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (it will take 1-2 minutes).
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network with a default name (for example, Xiaomi_XXXX) and use the standard password specified on the router sticker.
After resetting, you will need to reconfigure the router: select a network name, set a new password, set up an Internet connection (if your provider requires you to enter a login / password to access, for example, PPPoE).
β οΈ Note: On some Xiaomi models (e.g, AX3600) Factory resets may result in loss of binding to the Mi Account. If the router was purchased in China, a Chinese phone number may be required to re-activate it.
What if the router does not distribute the Internet after resetting?
How to Create a Strong Password for Wi-Fi on Xiaomi
A weak Wi-Fi password is like an open door for hackers and neighbors who want to drink your traffic. To protect your network, follow these guidelines:
- π Length of at least 12 characters β the longer the password, the harder it is to pick up.
- π °οΈ Register combination β use upper and lowercase letters (for example, XiaomiSecure2026!).
- π’ Numbers and symbols β add numbers and special characters (@, #, $), Avoid obvious substitutions like p.@ssw0rd.
- π« Eliminate Personal Information β Do not use names, dates of birth or addresses.
- π Regular change β update your password every 3-6 months.
Example of a strong password: MiRtr_789#KpL2!. To avoid forgetting it, save it to your password manager (like Google Password Manager or KeePass) or write it down on paper and store it in a safe place.
Avoid common mistakes:
- β Using a default password (such as 12345678 or admin).
- β Short passwords (less than 8 characters).
- β Same password for Wi-Fi and router administrator panel.
π‘
A strong password is not 100% secure, but it makes it much harder for attackers to do so, and we recommend turning off WPS in router settings, as it has vulnerabilities.
Frequent problems and their solutions
When you change your password on a Xiaomi router, users often encounter common errors, and consider the most common ones and how to fix them:
1. Cannot enter the Administrator Panel
If you enter the correct login and password, but the router does not allow you to set up:
- π Restart the router (turn off power for 30 seconds).
- π Check if it's correct. IP-address you enter (e.g. 192.168.31.1, not 192.168.1.1).
- π± Try logging in via another device or browser.
- π§ If nothing helps, reset to factory settings (see Method 3).
2.After changing the password, the Internet disappeared
If you have Wi-Fi but no internet:
- π Check if the cable provider is connected to the port WAN.
- π‘ Make sure that the router settings indicate the correct connection type (PPPoE, Dynamic Connection). IP etc.).
- π Call the provider β you may need to re-authorize MAC-address.
3 Devices do not connect to Wi-Fi after changing password
If the gadgets can not connect to the network:
- π Restart the router and device.
- π± On the device, βforgetβ the network (in Wi-Fi settings) and connect again.
- π Make sure you enter a new password without typos (registration is important!).
- π‘ Check if the router has Hide Network enabled. SSID).
4 Mi Wi-Fi application does not see router
If the application does not detect the device:
- π± Update the application to the latest version.
- π Reboot the router and smartphone.
- π Connect to the Wi-Fi router network manually (even if there is no internet connection).
- π‘ Make sure the router is not in Bridge or Repiter mode.
Additional security settings for Xiaomi router
Changing your password is just the first step to protecting your network. To protect your Xiaomi router from hacking and unauthorized access, we recommend you to do the following:
- π Turn it off. WPS β This feature makes it easier to connect devices, but it has critical vulnerabilities. β Security.
- π Update your firmware β regularly check for updates in the System section β Firmware update.
- π‘ Set up a guest network β if you have frequent visitors, create a separate network with limited access to local devices.
- π‘οΈ Turn on the firewall β in the routerβs security settings, activate the built-in attack protection.
- π Check connected devices β in the Mi Wi-Fi application or web interface, see the list of connected gadgets and block unknown ones.
If you have a modern router (such as the AX6000), turn on the Wi-Fi 6 standard (802.11ax) for better speed and stability. For older devices, you can leave the compatible 802.11n/ac mode.
If you use a router in a large home or office, consider setting up frequency splitting (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). At 5 GHz, the speed is higher, but the range is smaller, and 2.4 GHz travels better through walls. In Wi-Fi settings, you can assign different names (SSIDs) for each frequency.
