When access to the home network is lost, users often forget the complex code to log in to 192.168.31.1 or lose a sheet with a recorded Wi-Fi key? This is not a reason for panic, as the architecture of the Xiaomi Mi Router provides several effective ways to regain control.
Access recovery requires understanding the difference between resetting your administrator password and fully returning to factory settings. In the first case, you save some of the ISP's settings, in the second case, the device becomes "clean" out of the box, and we'll break down both options by focusing on hardware through the Reset button.
Before you start active actions, make sure that the router is on the network and the indicators flash normally. Any manipulation with firmware or system files requires stable power, so as not to turn a working device into a βbrickβ.
Differences Between Wi-Fi Password Reset and Administrator
Many users confuse the two types of protection, which leads to unnecessary actions. The Wi-Fi password is the key you enter on your phone or laptop to connect to the Internet. The administrator password is access to the internal router menu, where the channel settings change, DNS and binding MAC-address.
If you've forgotten only the wireless key, but remember the login data to the web interface, you don't have to reset completely. You just go to the control panel and look or change the current encryption key in the wireless network section, and you save time to reconfigure the Internet.
However, if the password to the administrator account is lost, the situation is more complicated: MiWiFi security system does not allow you to simply recover the forgotten code through email or a control question, unless you have been associated with the Xiaomi Cloud account.
β οΈ Warning: Full Hard Reset will delete all user data, including your ISPβs login and password, and make sure you have a contract with the ISP or have this data recorded before you start the procedure.
What is the difference between a reset via a web interface and a hardware one?
Preparation for the procedure for restoring access
To do this successfully, you'll need physical access to the device. The router must be connected to a power source. If you're planning to reconfigure the Internet, find a contract with the provider that lists the connection type, login and password.
You'll also need a device with a network adapter, like a laptop, a PC, or a smartphone. For a desktop computer, you'd better have a patch cord on hand (LAN-cable, because after the Wi-Fi reset, the network will either be disabled or have a standard open name without protection.
βοΈ Ready to dump
It's important to know which recovery method is right for you. If you're new or you just want to clear your connection history, the software method is right, and if you've got the device from previous owners or your password is lost forever, get ready for hardware intervention.
Method 1: Hardware reset via Reset button
This is the most reliable and versatile method, working even if the router is βhangβ or not allowed to enter the menu. On the body of most models Xiaomi Mi Router (3, 4, 4A, 4C, Pro, AX3600) at the rear, next to the LAN ports and the power connector, there is a small hole.
Inside this hole is a Reset button, and you have to use a thin object to activate it, like an unbended paperclip, a toothpick, or a special needle from the kit, and it's usually useless to press with your finger because of the depth of the button.
The procedure is performed strictly according to the algorithm:
- π Turn the router on and wait until it fully loads (the indicator will light up in blue or white).
- π Find the Reset hole on the back of the device.
- π Press the button inside the hole and hold it for 5-10 seconds.
- π Watch the indicator: When it starts flashing orange (or blinking quickly), the button can be released.
Once the button is released, the router will go into reboot, which can take 1 to 3 minutes. Don't turn off the power at that moment, otherwise you can damage the file system. When the indicator lights up again with even blue (or white) light, the device is ready for initial setup.
β οΈ Note: Hold the Reset button at least 5 Short press (1-2 On some models, Xiaomi performs the function WPS or reboot, but does not reset the settings to the factory.
π‘
If the indicator does not change color after holding the button, try to increase the time of pressing to 15 seconds. on older firmware, the reaction to reset may be slowed down.
Method 2: Reset via web interface (if available)
If you remember the administrator password but want to clear your settings or change your access keys, it's easier to use the software method. Open your browser and enter 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com in the address bar.
After authorization, go to Settings β Status or System. Depending on the firmware version (Chinese or global), the interface may differ, but the logic remains the same.
Find the "Reset" or "Reset Factory" button, and the system will ask you to confirm the action, warning you of data loss, and after confirmation, the router will restart itself.
This is preferable if you just want to reconfigure the network from the comfort of the couch, and it's less traumatic to the device's flash memory than using a physical button frequently, although the difference is minimal in the home environment.
| Model router | Location Reset | Retention time | Reset indicator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi Router 4A | Behind, next to the LAN | 5-7 seconds | Blinks orange |
| Xiaomi Mi Router 3G | Back, at WAN Port. | 5-10 seconds | Flashing yellow. |
| Xiaomi AX3600 | Bottom of the hull | 5 seconds | Light pulsation |
| Xiaomi 4C | Back, combined. | 10 seconds. | Fast blinking. |
Primary adjustment after reset
Once a router is successfully reset, it creates an open Wi-Fi network. Xiaomi_xxxx or MiWiFi_xxxx, where xxxx is the last digits MAC-Connect to it from your phone or computer.
The welcome page will automatically open (or open your browser and go to any site), select the interface language (Chinese or English/Russian if the firmware is global), and then the system will prompt you to create a new administrator password.
Come up with a strong code that you won't forget. It's recommended to use a combination of letters and numbers. The same password can be used for Wi-Fi by selecting the appropriate option "Use the administrator password for Wi-Fi" to avoid confusion.
In the next step, the router will try to automatically determine the type of connection, if the provider uses Dynamic IP (DHCP), the Internet will appear immediately. If you need PPPoE (login and password), enter the data from the contract.
π‘
The main goal of the initial setup is not just to get the Internet, but to immediately set new passwords and update the firmware to the current version to close security vulnerabilities.
Solving Frequent Problems and Errors
Sometimes the procedure goes wrong. If the router doesn't create a Wi-Fi network or lets you go to the settings page after the reset, check the cable. When setting up from a PC, it's better to use a wired connection to the LAN port (usually blue).
Sometimes the browser caches old access data. Try opening the settings page in Incognito mode or using another browser. Also, cleaning the DNS cache with the ipconfig /flushdns command line of Windows helps.
If the indicator is lit red or yellow after reset and does not turn blue/white, the firmware may be damaged, in which case you will need to flash the device through recovery mode, which is a more complex procedure.
β οΈ Note: If the router is purchased hand-held and tied to the previous owner's Mi Cloud account, a button reset may not help - the device will request authorization of the old account when connecting to the Internet.
