Xiaomi routers have gained popularity due to a combination of affordable prices, stable operation and extensive functionality. However, many users face one problem: the default interface of the device is often configured in Chinese or English, which creates inconvenience when setting up the network, especially if you do not speak foreign languages.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to Russify Xiaomi routers, from official methods through firmware to alternative solutions for older models, learn how to change the language in the web interface, through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application, and what to do if standard methods do not work, and pay special attention to common errors and how to fix them.
Why is Xiaomi router not in Russian?
The main reason for the lack of Russian in the interface is regional restrictions: most Xiaomi models (e.g. Mi Router 4A, 4C, AX3600) are originally designed for the Chinese market, where Russian is not included in the list of supported languages.
Other possible causes:
- πΉ Outdated version of firmware (Russian language may appear in newer updates).
- πΉ Buying a device through informal channels (such as AliExpress or local resellers) where vendors do not adapt the software to the local market.
- πΉ Resetting settings to factory parameters, after which the language returns to the original (Chinese or English).
Fortunately, in most cases, the problem can be solved without complex manipulations, and then we'll look at all the methods available, from the simplest to the most advanced.
Method 1: Change language through the web interface (for global firmware)
If your router supports global firmware (e.g., models for the European or Russian market), the language change will take no more than a minute.
- Connect to the router network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable.
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 (or miwifi.com).
- Enter the username and password (usually admin/admin by default or indicated on the device sticker).
- Go to Settings β System β Language (or similar, depending on the firmware version).
- Select Russian from the list and save the changes.
If you don't have Russian on your list, your firmware doesn't support it out of the box, so move on to the following ways.
Make sure the router is connected to the internet.|Check the firmware version in the Status section|Make a backup of settings (Settings) β Backup)|Use Chrome or Firefox browser to display correctly-->
Method 2: Update firmware to global version
Many Xiaomi models (such as the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition or AX1800) have separate firmware for the Chinese and global markets. Global versions often include Russian.
Step 1. Download the current firmware:
- π Official Xiaomi website: mi.com/global/miwifi/download (Choose a model with Global markings).
- π Alternative sources: forums 4PDA Xiaomi Community (look for themes with firmware for your model).
Step 2. Update the firmware through the web interface:
- Go to the Settings β System β Manual Upgrade.
- Download the downloaded firmware file (usually with the.bin or.pak extension).
- Wait until the process is completed (the router will restart automatically).
What to do if the firmware is not installed?
Important: Firmware through unofficial sources can lead to loss of warranty and unstable operation of the device.
Method 3: Russification through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile application
The official Mi Wi-Fi app (available for Android and iOS) sometimes allows you to manage a router in Russian, even if the web interface itself is not Russified.
- Download the app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Connect to the router network via Wi-Fi.
- Open the app and follow the connection instructions (scanning may be required) QR-router-code).
- In the application settings, select Russian (if available).
Please note:
- π± The app can only Russify basic features (such as guest access or parental controls), but not the entire interface.
- π Some users note that after updating the application, the language is reset in English again.
π‘
If the app doesnβt find the router, try disabling the VPN or antivirus on the phone β they can block the local connection.
Method 4: Alternative firmware (for experienced users)
If the official methods did not help, you can install custom firmware with support for Russian.
- π οΈ OpenWRT is an open firmware with extensive customization options (supports many Xiaomi models, but requires technical knowledge).
- π§ Padavan - an alternative firmware with a Russified interface (suitable for Mi Router) 3G/4A/4C).
Pre-installing warnings:
β οΈ Attention: Installing custom firmware can permanently block the router if an incompatible version is selected. 4PDA OpenWRT Wiki for your model.
The general installation algorithm of Padavan:
- Download the firmware for your model from the official repository.
- Connect to the router via SSH (use the root login and password from the sticker).
- Execute the command to unlock the bootloader: nvram set flag_try_sys1_failed=1 nvram set flag_try_sys2_failed=1 nvram commit reboot
- After restarting, download the firmware through the web interface in recovery mode.
After successful installation, the router interface will be fully in Russian, and additional features will appear (for example, IPv6 support, advanced QoS settings).
π‘
Custom firmware gives you complete control of the router, but requires technical skills, and for most users, formal Russification techniques are enough.
Method 5: Russification through a browser translator
If no other method has worked, and you need to configure your router, you can use the built-in browser translator, which does not change the interface language, but allows you to understand the basic settings:
- Open the router web interface (192.168.31.1) in the Google Chrome browser.
- Right-click on any text and select Translate into Russian.
- Use translation to navigate the menu (e.g. Settings β Settings).
Limitations of the method:
- π Not all technical terms are translated correctly (e.g, DHCP It may not be possible to translate).
- π When updating the page, the translation is reset.
- π It does not work for mobile devices (only on PCs).
This method is suitable for one-time settings, but does not solve the problem completely.
Common mistakes and their solutions
When russifying Xiaomi routers, users often face typical problems, and we have collected the most common of them and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| There is no "Language" item in the settings | Outdated firmware or Chinese version of the software | Update the firmware to the global version (see Method 2) |
| After the update, the router does not turn on | Incompatible firmware or interrupted process | Recovery Mode (press the Reset button for 10 seconds) |
| Mi Wi-Fi app does not find router | Router is in bridge mode or DHCP is disabled | Connect by cable and check network settings |
| There is a Russian language, but part of the menu is in English. | Incomplete localization in firmware | Install a newer version of the software or use custom firmware |
If your problem is not described in the table, check the following points:
- π Make sure the router is connected to the internet (without a connection, some features may not be available).
- π Try resetting to factory settings (Settings) β Restore) and repeat the procedure of Russification.
- π‘ Check firmware compatibility with your router model (e.g. Mi Router) 4A and 4C have different firmware files).
β οΈ Warning: If the router stopped responding after a failed firmware operation (power indicator does not burn or flashes orange), do not try to flash it again without diagnosis. In some cases, you need to solder the flash memory, which is only possible in the service center.
