Forgot your Wi-Fi password or want to update it for security? Xiaomi routers (including the popular Mi Router 4A, AX3600 and Redmi Router AX6000 models) allow you to change your password in 5 minutes, both through the mobile application and through the web interface. But there are nuances: for example, after resetting, you will have to configure the network again, and some models require you to link to your Mi Account.
In this article, we have 3 proven ways to change your password, including restoring access if your old password is lost, and we will also discuss how to choose a strong password so that your network is not hacked in 10 minutes (yes, this is a real threat for standard combinations like 12345678), and at the end we will answer frequent questions, such as why the router does not save new settings or how to disable guest Wi-Fi, which can be a loophole for hackers.
If you've never checked your router's settings, don't worry: Xiaomi's interface is more intuitive than TP-Link or ASUS. The main thing is not to confuse the Wi-Fi password (which is typed on your phone/laptop) with the Admin panel password (for logging into your router settings).
Modern Xiaomi routers support the WPA3 and WPA2/WPA3 Mixed security protocols, which we recommend using. But outdated WEP or even WPA (without a number) is better to disable: they are hacked in seconds using free utilities like Aircrack-ng.
Method 1: Change password through the Mi Wi-Fi app (the easiest one)
The official Mi Wi-Fi app (formerly Mi Router) is the most convenient way to manage a Xiaomi router, especially if you have a model that supports Mi Home (such as Mi Router 4A Gigabit or AX3200).
Here's how it works:
- Download Mi Wi-Fi from Google Play or App Store (the app is free, but you will need a Xiaomi account).
- Connect to your routerβs Wi-Fi network (if you forget your password, use Hardware Reset Method 3).
- Open the app and select your router from the list of devices.
- Go to the Wi-Fi settings section β Wi-Fi password.
- Enter a new password (security recommendations in the next section) and save the changes.
Important: Once you change your password, all devices will be disconnected from the network, and you will have to re-enter a new password on phones, laptops, smart speakers and other gadgets.
If the application gives an error "I failed to connect to the router", check:
- πΆ Are you connected to the right Wi-Fi network (sometimes the phone clings to nearby access points with the same name).
- π Restart the router (turn off power for 30 seconds).
- π± Update the Mi Wi-Fi app to the latest version.
- π Make sure the router is connected to the Internet (on some models without the Internet, the application does not work).
Method 2: Change passwords via web interface (for all models)
If the app doesn't fit (like an old model like Mi Router 3 or Mini), you can change your password through your browser, and you don't need any additional software, just a computer or a phone connected to the router's network.
Step instructions:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi of your Xiaomi router.
- Open any browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari) and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com. Press Enter.
- Enter the login and password to log into the admin panel. By default, this is: Login: admin Password: admin or the field is empty (depending on the model).
If you have changed this data and forgotten it, you will have to make a hardware reset (see Method 3).

What if the router does not distribute Wi-Fi after resetting?
How to Create a Strong Wi-Fi Password (and Donβt Forget It)
Weak passwords are the main reason for home network hacking, according to Kaspersky, 60% Routers in Russia use passwords from the top-100 The first combinations that hackers check are popular, 12345678, qwerty or password can be hacked in seconds.
Rules for creating a secure password:
- π’ Length: minimum 12 characters (optimally 15-20) Each additional character increases the selection time exponentially.

Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even after a successful password change, users face problems, and here are the most common mistakes and their solutions:
