Why Change Your Password on Xiaomi Router and When Itβs Critical
Xiaomi routers are some of the most popular devices for home networking due to their combination of price, functionality and ease of setup. However, even the most reliable routers require periodic Wi-Fi password updates. Why is this important? First, many Xiaomi models (such as Mi Router 4A or AX3600) use standard login/password combinations that are easy to pick up. Second, if you have never changed your password from the network, there is a high probability that your Internet is connected neighbors or bots stealing traffic.
There are several situations where changing a password becomes necessary: buying a used router, suspected network hacking (slow internet, unknown devices on the list of connected devices), routine password rotation for security. Also remember that the Wi-Fi password and the password for logging in to 192.168.31.1 (admin panel) are different things. In this article, we will discuss both options, and also consider typical errors and how to fix them.
Preparation: What to Know Before Changing Your Password
Before you start changing your password, make sure you have:
- π Stable connection to the router - by cable (LAN) Wi-Fi (if the password has not been changed).
- π± Device for setting up: smartphone, tablet or computer with a browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
- π Current login data to the admin panel (if the password hasn't been reset) By default, this is often the case admin/admin or combination MAC-address.
- β‘ Backup power (if the router is connected via UPS) β interrupting the setup process may cause a failure.
If you donβt remember the current password from the admin panel, youβll have to make a hardware reset (press the Reset button for 10 seconds). Note that this will reset all settings, including the network name (SSID) and PPPoE settings (if used). For Xiaomi models with MiWiFi firmware (such as Mi Router 3G), after reset, the admin password will match the Wi-Fi password listed on the sticker at the bottom of the device.
Method 1: Change your Wi-Fi password through a web interface
The most reliable method is to use a web-based control panel, suitable for all models, including the Xiaomi Mi Router 4, AX1800 and AIoT Router AC2350.
- Connect to the router network (by cable or Wi-Fi).
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com. If the page doesn't open, check the connection or try 192.168.0.1.
- Enter the login and password (by default β admin/admin or see the sticker on the router).
- Go to Settings β Wi-Fi (or Wireless Settings in English).
- In the Wi-Fi Password field, enter a new combination. Recommended length is at least 12 symbols using letters, numbers and special characters (e.g. Xiaomi)@2026_Router!).
- Press Save. The router will restart and all devices will be disconnected from the network.

In the settings, WPA2-PSK or WPA3| encryption is selected.
Guest networks are disabled if not used-->
If the router does not automatically restart after saving, do so manually by turning off power for 30 seconds. Please note: some Xiaomi models (such as Mi Router 4Q) may require confirmation of password change via SMS if your Mi Account is linked.

If devices don't connect to Wi-Fi after changing your password, try temporarily disabling Hide SSID in your router settings. Some gadgets (especially smart speakers) don't see hidden networks.
Method 2: Change your password through the Mi WiFi (Mi Home) app
For Android or iOS smartphone owners, itβs more convenient to use the official Mi WiFi app (or Mi Home if the router is integrated into the Xiaomi ecosystem), which only works if the router is linked to your Mi Account.
Instructions:
- Download the Mi WiFi app from the App Store or Google Play (for Mi Home, use the version for your region).
- Sign in under the same account as on the router.
- Select your router from the device list (e.g. Xiaomi AX3600).
- Go to the Wi-Fi settings section.
- Click Change password and enter the new combination twice.
- Confirm the changes. The router will reboot.
The advantage of this method is the ability to manage the router remotely (if you have access through the cloud), but be careful: if you forget the password from Mi Account, it will be more difficult to restore access to the router's settings than through the web interface.
What to do if the app does not see the router?
Reset password if access is lost
If you donβt remember the Wi-Fi password or the login data, the only way out is a hardware reset. All Xiaomi routers have a Reset button (usually recessed in the case and require a paper clip or toothpick).
Step-by-step:
- Put the router on the network.
- Find the Reset button on the back (near the LAN/WAN ports).
- Press the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing orange or go out completely.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).
After discharge:
- π Name of the network (SSID) and the Wi-Fi password will be reset to the factory (indicated on the sticker).
- π The Admin Panel Password will become Admin (or the Last Part) MAC-addresses for some models).
- β οΈ All additional settings (e.g. PPPoE, DMZ, Parent Control will be lost.

Factory reset is a last resort: If the router is configured by the provider (for example, for IPTV), after the reset, you may need to re-enter the connection settings.
If the router does not give the Internet after reset, check:
- π Correct connection of the cable from the provider (must be in the port) WAN, blue-colored).
- π‘ Connection type in settings (PPPoE, Dynamic) IP or static IP).
- π Relevance of data for authorization (login / password from the provider).
How to Create a Strong Password for Xiaomi Router
A weak password is the main reason for hacking home networks, and hackers use brute force attacks, dictionary selection, or protocol vulnerabilities (such as WPS).
| Password type | Example | Level of security | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weak. | 12345678 | β Low. | It's coming in seconds. |
| Medium. | XiaomiRouter2026 | β οΈ Medium. | Vulnerable to dictionary attacks |
| Strong. | k7#pL9@Xm!2026$R | β High-pitched | More than 20 characters, mixed register, special symbols |
| Perfect. | CorrectHorseBatteryStaple!89 | β β Maximum | Phrase of 4-5 words + numbers/symbols |
Recommendations for creating a password:
- π Use password managers (such as Bitwarden or KeePass) to generate and store.
- π΅ Avoid personal information (dates of birth, names, phone numbers).
- π Change your password every 6 months.
- π‘οΈ Turn it off. WPS In the router settings, this protocol is vulnerable.
β οΈ Warning: Never use the same Wi-Fi password and router admin panel. If a hacker accesses the settings, they can reconfigure the settings. DNS, intercept traffic or block you from.
Common mistakes and their solutions
When you change your password, you often have a common problem, and let's look at the most common ones.
- Error: "Incorrect password" when you log into the admin panel. Solution: Try admin/admin, admin/empty, or look at the password on the router sticker. If nothing works, reset.
- After changing the password, the Internet disappeared. Solution: Check the connection type (PPPoE/DHCP) in Settings β Internet.
- Solution: Make sure that the Wi-Fi settings select 802.11 b/g/n/ac (not just ac) and the encryption costs WPA2-PSK or WPA3.
- Mi WiFi does not see the router. Solution: Update the router's firmware via the web interface (Settings β Update) or reinstall the application.
β οΈ Note: If after changing the password, the Xiaomi router constantly restarts or does not save the settings, this may indicate a damaged firmware. TFTP (Instructions look for in forums 4PDA Xiaomi Community).
Additional security measures for Xiaomi router
Changing your password is just the first step to protecting your network, and letβs look at the additional settings you need to set up:
- π Disable Remote Control (if not used): Settings β Cloud. β Remote access.
- π‘ Change the name of the network (SSID) unique (not unique) Xiaomi_XXXX). This will make it harder for hackers to identify the router model.
- π‘οΈ Turn on the filtering by MAC-Addresses (Settings section) β Wi-Fi β Filter MAC), But remember, this is not a panacea β MAC can be faked.
- π Update the firmware to the latest version: Settings β Update: New versions close vulnerabilities.
- π Set up a guest network for visitors with a separate password and speed limit.
For advanced users:
- π§ Install an alternative firmware (such as OpenWRT or Padavan) if official functionality is limited.
- π Set up. VPN-server on the router for secure remote access.
- π Use QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize traffic (e.g. for Zoom or online gaming).
