Connecting to Xiaomi’s router is the first step to setting up a home network, but many users are already struggling at this stage. Unlike traditional routers, Mi Router devices (including the AX3000, AX6000 and Pro models) require not only standard password input, but also sometimes authorization through a Mi Account account, which creates confusion between connecting via a web interface or using the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app.
In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to connect to Xiaomi routers – from basic Wi-Fi connection to alternative methods via Ethernet and Mi Home. Particular attention will be paid to typical errors (for example, “failed to connect to the network” or “wrong password”) that arise due to the features of the firmware MiWiFi ROM. If you just unpacked the new Xiaomi Router or are trying to restore access to the old one, here you will find clear instructions without unnecessary “water”.
1.Preparation for connection: what to check before starting
Before you try to connect to a router, make sure that the basic conditions are met. Often problems arise from small things: a discharged power source, improper positioning of antennas or conflict. IP-address.
Here is the mandatory checklist before connecting:
Make sure the router is plugged in (the power indicator is blue or orange)
Check that the provider’s cable is connected to the WAN port (usually highlighted in blue)
Disable VPN or proxy on the device you’re connecting from
If you connect over Wi-Fi, make sure your device is within a radius of 2-3 meters from the router.
Reset your network settings on your phone/PC (forget the old network) Xiaomi_XXXX, if you've connected before)-->
Pay special attention to router indicators. If the LED flashes orange, it is a sign of lack of Internet connection (problem on the ISP side or incorrect cable connection). Blue means that the router is ready to set up, but not yet configured. If the indicator does not burn at all, check the power supply (on models AX6000 and AX3600, it often fails after voltage surges).
💡
If the Xiaomi router does not respond to the power button, try to disconnect it from the network for 30 seconds, then hold the Reset button for 10-15 seconds before resetting.
2. Wi-Fi connection: the standard method
The most common method is to connect via a wireless network. Xiaomi routers by default create a network with the name Xiaomi_XXXX or MiWiFi_XXXX, where XXXX — last-minute MAC-The default password is on the sticker under the device (if the router is new) or was previously set by you.
Step-by-step:
- On your phone/PC, open a list of available Wi-Fi networks.
- Select the network. Xiaomi_XXXX (Or your custom name if the router is already configured).
- Enter the password from the sticker (or your current one). If the password doesn't fit, try admin or 12345678, the standard combinations for old firmware.
- After connecting, open your browser and go to 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- Enter the login and password to log into the control panel (by default — admin/admin, unless changed).
If after entering the password there is an error “Incorrect login or password”, but you are sure of the correctness of the data, try:
- 🔄 Reset the router with the Reset button (hold 10 seconds).
- 📱 Connect via the Mi Wi-Fi app (more on this below).
- 🖥️ Use a different browser (e.g. Chrome instead of Safari).
3. Connect via Mi Wi-Fi (Mi Router)
The official Mi Wi-Fi app (formerly Mi Router) makes it easier to set up but requires authorization through a Mi Account, raising questions for users who don’t want to link the router to a personal account, but without it, some features (such as parental controls or remote control) will not be available.
How to connect through the application:
- Download Mi Wi-Fi from the App Store or Google Play (caution with clones!).
- Connect to the Xiaomi router network (as described in the previous section).
- Open the app and select “Add Device” → “Router”.
- Scan it. QR-code from the router sticker or enter the serial number manually.
- Sign in via Mi Account (if you do not want to link your account, use the web interface).
If the application gives an error “I failed to connect to the router”, check:
- 🌐 Connect to the correct network (sometimes the phone clings to neighboring networks with a similar name).
- 🔄 Update of the application (older versions do not support new router models).
- 📵 Disconnection of mobile Internet on the phone (conflict with Wi-Fi).
What if Mi Wi-Fi can’t see the router?
4. Connection by cable (Ethernet): reliable method
If Wi-Fi is not working or you prefer a wired connection, use an Ethernet cable, which is mandatory for initial configuration of some models (for example, Xiaomi Router 4A Gigabit), where Wi-Fi is disabled by default.
Instructions:
- Connect one end of the cable to any of the LAN-router ports (yellow ports).
- Connect the other end to the network card of a PC or laptop.
- Open your browser and go to 192.168.31.1.
- Enter the login/password (by default — admin/admin).
If the page does not open, check:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Page 192.168.31.1 does not open | Wrong. IP-address | Check your network settings on your PC (should get IP automatically) |
| Connection "Without access to the network" | Cable problems | Try another cable or port. |
| Error "No connection to the router" | Router doesn't give away IP | Reset the router with the Reset button and reconnect |
💡
Cable connection is the only way to configure a router if the Wi-Fi is turned off in the firmware or the wireless module is broken.
5. Connect via Mi Home (for smart routers)
Newer Xiaomi routers (e.g., AX3600 or AX6000) support integration with the Mi Home ecosystem, allowing you to manage the network through one app along with other smart devices, but for this router must be tied to the region (China, Europe, Russia) or the functions will be limited.
How to connect the router to Mi Home:
- Open the Mi Home app and log in.
- Click "+" → "Add Device" → select "Router".
- Follow the instructions on the screen (scanning may be required) QR-router).
- Choose a region (important! for Russia, choose Russia, otherwise some of the features will not be available).
If the router is not added to Mi Home, check:
- 📍 Account region (must match the router region).
- 🔄 Update to the firmware (older versions may not support Mi Home).
- 🌍 Geolocation (include) GPS on the phone to correctly determine the region).
💡
If the router appears as “Unsupported device” in Mi Home, try changing your account region to “China” (mainland) – sometimes this solves the problem.
6. Solving common connection errors
Even with the right actions, users are faced with errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
Error 1: “Incorrect Password” When Connecting to Wi-Fi
⚠️ Note: If you are sure that the password is correct but the router does not accept it, the problem may be in the character register. ≠ Also check if the Caps Lock key is on.
Error 2: Page 192.168.31.1 does not open
- 🔌 Check that the cable is connected to LAN-port, not WAN.
- 🖥️ On PC, disable antivirus/firewall (they can block access).
- 🔄 Try another browser or clear the current cache.
Error 3: Mi Wi-Fi app freezes during connection phase
⚠️ Warning: If the Mi Wi-Fi app freezes during the Connect to the Router stage, the problem may be in conflict IP-Try manually setting static on your phone. IP ranged 192.168.31.X (e.g. 192.168.31.100) with mask 255.255.255.0.
7. Additional ways of connecting (for experienced users)
If standard methods don't work, alternative approaches can be used, which require more technical knowledge, but sometimes save in difficult situations.
Method 1: Connecting via SSH
Xiaomi routers based on OpenWRT firmware (for example, R3G or R4A) support access over SSH.
- Make sure that SSH is enabled in the router settings (Moreover → SSH).
- Use the PuTTY (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux) client to connect to 192.168.31.1 with the root login.
- The default password is the same as for the web interface.
ssh root@192.168.31.1Method 2: Connect via Telnet (for older models)
On the routers Xiaomi Mini or Router 3 sometimes works Telnet, you can activate it through a hidden menu:
- Go to 192.168.31.1/cgi-bin/luci/;stok=XXX/admin/system (replace XXX with your stok, which can be obtained through the page code inspector).
- Enable Telnet in the Management section.
- Connect via command:
telnet 192.168.31.1
