Why You Need to Reboot Your Router and When to Do It
Rebooting a router is not just about turning it off and on again. It is a procedure that helps solve most Internet problems, from slow speeds to no connection at all. In Xiaomi routers (such as Mi Router 4A, Redmi Router AX5 or Xiaomi AIoT Router AC2350), rebooting resets cache, updates routing tables and closes the βhungβ sessions of devices, especially for users with 10+ gadgets connected to the network, from smartphones to smart light bulbs.
But how do you know if a router really needs to restart?
- π The Internet is running despite a stable Wi-Fi signal (4-5 strip).
- π± Devices connect to the network, but pages don't load (error) DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN).
- π The indicators on the router do not burn as usual (for example, blue or orange LED constantly flashes).
- π After the power outage, the router did not restore the connection automatically.
Important: If the problem occurs only on one device (for example, only on the Xiaomi 13 Pro phone), then it is most likely not the router that is to blame, but the gadget itself. In this case, try rebooting the smartphone or resetting the network settings in Settings β Connections and Sharing β Network Reset.
Method 1: Reboot via the Mi Home app (official method)
The most convenient way to use the Mi Home app (formerly Mi Wi-Fi) is to automatically identify your router model and give you access to all the features, including reboot.
- Open the Mi Home app on Xiaomiβs phone (if not, download it from Google Play or the App Store).
- Sign in with the same Xiaomi account that the router is attached to.
- On the home screen, find your router (such as the Xiaomi Router 4C) and tap it.
- In the device menu, select Settings (cog in the upper right corner).
- Scroll down and click Reboot router.
- Confirm the action in the pop-up window.
It takes about 1-2 minutes, and don't turn off the router or shut down the app, and after the reboot, all connected devices will automatically restore the connection (unless the SSID or password has changed).

β οΈ Note: If the router appears as βOfflineβ in the Mi Home app, check the physical connection of the cables and the indicators on the case first.Perhaps the problem is not a software failure, but a lack of power or Internet connection from the provider.
Method 2: Web-based router interface (for power users)
If the Mi Home app is not working or the router is not tied to the account, you can use the web control panel, this method is suitable for all Xiaomi and Redmi routers, including outdated (Mi Router 3) and new (Redmi Router AX6000).
Instructions:
- Make sure the phone is connected to the Wi-Fi router (or via an Ethernet cable if supported).
- Open any browser (Chrome, Mi Browser) and enter one of the IP: 192.168.31.1 (main for most models) 192.168.0.1 (alternative) miwifi.com (domain name for new firmware) in the address bar

If IP-address is not opened, check the network settings on the phone:
Settings β Wi-Fi β [your network] β Settings β Additional β IP: Static
Set the IP manually, for example: 192.168.31.100 (mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.31.1)| Model router | IP default | Login/password | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Router 4A | 192.168.31.1 | admin/admin | Supports miwifi.com |
| Redmi Router AC2100 | 192.168.31.1 | Like when you set up. | Requires a tie-in to Mi Home |
| Xiaomi AIoT Router AX3600 | miwifi.com | Xiaomi account | There is no classic web interface |
β οΈ Attention: In new models (AX3600, AX6000) The web interface can be disabled by default, in which case use the Mi Home or the physical button.
Method 3: Physical button on the router body
If the router is completely frozen (does not respond to commands via the app or the web), it remains mechanically restarted. All Xiaomi routers have a Reset or Reboot button, but its functions depend on the model:
- π Short press (1-3 sec: soft reboot (analogue of command via interface).
- π§ Long pressing (5-10 Sec: reset to factory settings (deletes all data, including Wi-Fi password!).
Where to look for the button:
- π On the back panel (near the ports) LAN/WAN) β Mi Router 4C, Redmi Router AC2100.
- π Inside the hole (you need a paper clip) - Mi Router 3G, Mi Router HD.
- π On the bottom cover - in compact models (Mi Router) 4A Gigabit).
Algorithm of action:
- Find the Reset button (sometimes signed as WPS/Reset).
- Press it once (don't hold it!) and wait 5 seconds.
- The router will start rebooting (the indicators will change color or start flashing).
- If the indicators are gone, wait 1-2 minutes and turn on the router again.
What to do if the Reset button doesnβt work?
Method 4: Reboot via SSH (for advanced)
This method is suitable for users who have an alternative firmware stitched on their router (such as OpenWRT or Padavan), requiring SSH access and knowledge of Linux commands.
Step-by-step:
- Install an SSH app on your Xiaomi phone, such as Termux or JuiceSSH.
- Connect to your router via IP (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.31.1) with root login and password (it can be empty or admin by default).
- Enter the command to reboot: reboot or (for forced reboot): echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq echo b > /proc/sysrq-trigger
If you're not sure about the commands, you better use other ways. Incorrect input can lead to loss of access to the router.
π‘
Before connecting to SSH, check if this protocol is enabled in the router settings (Settings β Security β Remote Access). In standard firmware, Xiaomi SSH is disabled by default.
Method 5: Automatically Reboot on Schedule
If the router is often βhangingβ, you can set up automatic time reboot, a feature that is found in the firmware of most Xiaomi routers (except the most budget models).
How to set up:
- Open Mi Home and select your router.
- Go to Settings β Additional β Reboot on schedule.
- Turn on the function and specify the time (it is recommended 3-4 hours in the morning, when the load is minimal).
- Choose the days of the week (for example, daily or on weekends).
- Save the settings.
Advantages of this method:
- β° The router always restarts at a convenient time (does not interfere with work).
- π Prevents the accumulation of errors in the memory of the device.
- π Suitable for routers that work 24/7 (For example, in offices or smart homes).
β οΈ Warning: Do not set up automatic reboot more than once every 12 hours.Frequent reboots can shorten the life of the router's flash memory.
π‘
Automatic reboot is the best solution for routers that work in high load conditions (many connected devices, torrents, IP-camera).
What to do if the router does not restart
If none of these things work, the problem could be more serious than just a software failure.
- Check the power: π Disconnect the power supply from the router and outlet, wait 30 seconds, then plug back in. π Try another power supply with the same parameters (voltage and current strength are listed on the router label).
Diagnostics of indicators:
| Color of indicator | Meaning | Action. |
|---|---|---|
| π’ Green/blue (flashing) | Normal work. | The problem isn't the router. |
| π‘ Yellow/orange | No Internet from the provider | Check the WAN cable or call support |
| π΄ Red. | Critical error | Reset settings with the Reset button |
| β« It's not burning. | No food. | Check the power supply and cable |
Reset to factory settings:
If the router does not respond to commands, but the indicators are on, do a hard reset:
- Press and hold the Reset button for 10-15 seconds.
- Release when the indicators start flashing quickly.
- After the reboot, reset the router via Mi Home.
If the router still doesn't work after the reset, there may have been a firmware failure, which would require a flashing through the MiWiFi ROM or a service center.

Before resetting your settings, take a picture of the label on the router (the default login details are listed there) and save your current Wi-Fi settings (network name and password) in your phoneβs notes.
