Xiaomi routers have long gained popularity thanks to a combination of affordable prices, stable operation and advanced features that were previously only available in premium devices. However, even the most โsmartโ device requires the right setup โ especially if you want to squeeze the most out of it: from high Internet speed to protection from hackers. This article will help you understand all the nuances, whether it is the basic installation of the Xiaomi Wi-Fi router or subtle optimization for gamers and smart homes.
We're going to look at not only the standard steps like connecting to the Internet and changing your password, but also hidden MiWiFi firmware chips that the manufacturer doesn't advertise, like how to turn on a speed limit guest network or set traffic priority for 4K streaming. And we're going to look at common mistakes that cause the router to "slow down" or suddenly shut down - and how to fix them without calling the wizard.
Note: the instructions are relevant for all modern Xiaomi models โ from the budget Mi Router 4A and 4C to the flagship AX6000 and BE7000. If you have outdated firmware (before 2022), some menu items may differ โ we will warn you about this separately.
Preparation for setting up: what to do before turning on the router
Before connecting a router to a network, check three key points:
- ๐ฆ Set: the box should be the router itself, the power supply unit (with parameters corresponding to the model!), the network cable RJ-45 If something's not there, it's a reason to return the device under warranty.
- ๐ Type of connection: check with the provider what protocol it uses โ PPPoE, DHCP, Static IP or L2TP. This will be needed at the stage of setting up the Internet.
- ๐ฑ Device for setting up: prepare a smartphone / laptop with Wi-Fi 5 support (802.11ac) Older devices may not see the router network during the initial configuration phase.
Pay special attention to the power supply. Many users ignore its parameters, and in vain: if you connect the Xiaomi AX3600 to the unit from Mi Router 3, the device will overheat and spontaneously reboot. On the box and the unit itself must match the voltage (12V) and current (1A/1.5A).
โ ๏ธ Note: Do not connect the router to the network through USB-Hub or extension without grounding. This can cause firmware failure when upgrading โ especially for models with Qualcomm IPQ6000 (for example, AX6000).
If you are setting up your router for the first time, we recommend you reset to factory settings - even if the device is new.
- Put the router on the network.
- Find the Reset button on the back (usually recessed in the case).
- Press it with a paper clip for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing yellow.
First Connection: How to Enter the Router Control Panel
After resetting, the router will create an open network with the name Xiaomi_XXXX (where XXXX โ last-minute MAC-Connect to it from your phone or laptop. Then there are two options for entering the settings:
- Through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app (recommended for beginners):
Through the web interface
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- ๐ Default login and password โ admin/admin (If it doesnโt work, check the sticker on the router).
If the page does not open, check:
- ๐ Is the router connected to power (the indicator should burn blue, not orange).
- ๐ถ Are you connected to a router network and not another access point.
- ๐ Try clearing your browser cache or using Incognito mode.
๐ก
If the Mi Wi-Fi app doesnโt find the router, temporarily disable the VPN or firewall on your phone. also check that your device supports Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) โ older smartphones may not see the router network during the setup phase.
Once logged in, the system will suggest a firmware update. Don't ignore this notice: legacy software versions (especially before 2023) contain vulnerabilities that allow hackers to access your network. Update will take 3-5 minutes, router will reboot automatically.
Internet Connection Configurement: PPPoE, DHCP and Other Protocols
This is the most important stage - without the right parameters, the router will not be able to "distribute" the Internet. Go to Settings โ Internet (in the web interface) or Global Settings โ Connection type (in the application).
| Type of connection | What to ask from the provider | Example of values |
|---|---|---|
| PPPoE | Login, password, MTU (usually 1480) | user@provider.ru, 12345678 |
| DHCP (dynamic IP) | Nothing (auto-tune) | โ |
| Static IP | IP-Address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS | 192.168.1.10, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.1 |
| L2TP | Server name, login, password, shared key | tp.internet.beeline.ru, beeline123 |
For most Russian providers (Rostelecom, Beeline, MTS, TTK) PPPoE is used. If you are not sure about the parameters, call in support and clarify:
โHello, can you please tell me what type of connection is used for my tariff? I need to set up a new Xiaomi router?โ
After you enter, click Save and wait for the connection (the WAN indicator should light up green).
- ๐ Check your login/password (registration is important!).
- ๐ Check with the provider if it is not tied. MAC-address to the old router (if yes, ask to reset the link).
- ๐ง Try to manually specify DNS: 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google).
Make sure that the providerโs cable is connected to the WAN port (usually blue)
Reboot the router with a button on the back panel
Check if the WAN light is green/blue
Ping 8.8.8.8 through the command line (ping 8.8.8.8)-->
Wi-Fi Network Settings: Name, Password and Hidden Settings
Go to Settings โ Wi-Fi. You can set up here:
- ๐ Name of the network (SSID): Do not use personal data (for example, Ivanov_WiFi). You should use a neutral name like this. HomeNet_5G.
- ๐ Password: minimum length of 8 characters, we recommend a combination of letters, numbers and characters (for example, k7#pL9!mQ2).
- ๐ถ Frequency range: 2.4 GHz - better through walls, but slower and congested. 5 GHz - higher speed, but shorter range.
- ๐ Channel width: for 5 GHz, select 80 MHz (if devices support), for 2.4 GHz, 20 MHz (less interference).
Advice for AX6000 owners and newer: Enable OFDMA and MU-MIMO in additional settings, which allow the router to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously, which is critical for smart homes (cameras, light bulbs, speakers).
If you have a dual-band router (like the AX3000), you can combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under one name (Smart Connect function), and then the devices will automatically switch between bands.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some smart devices (such as Xiaomi Mi Home cameras) only work on a 2.4GHz network. If you turn on Smart Connect, they may lose connection when switching to 5GHz.
How do you know what Wi-Fi range your device supports?
Be sure to disable WPS (in the section Additional โ Security), which is vulnerable to brute force attacks, and its presence negates all efforts to protect the network with a complex password.
Guest access, traffic control and parental control
Xiaomi routers allow you to create a separate guest network with limited rights, which is useful if you often come to visit or rent a room.
- Go to Settings. โ Guest network.
- Enable the option and set a name/password (other than the main network!).
- In the Restrictions section, specify: ๐ Working hours (for example, from 9:00 to 23:00). ๐ Maximum speed (e.g. 10 Mbps). ๐ซ Blocked sites (social networks, torrents).
For parental controls, go to Settings โ Parental Controls.
- ๐ถ Tie the child's device to MAC-address.
- ๐ Set an access schedule (for example, weekdays only from 17:00 to 20:00).
- ๐ Block categories of sites (gambling, adult content).
The AX6000 and BE7000 users can access QoS (Quality of Service) traffic prioritization, such as the maximum speed for:
- ๐ฎ Game consoles (PlayStation, Xbox).
- ๐บ TVs from 4K-streaming.
- ๐ป Working laptops (for Zoom/Teams).
๐ก
Guest networking and parental controls can only be configured via the web interface (192.168.31.1).
Update firmware and reset to factory settings
Regular firmware updates fix vulnerabilities and add new features to update the software:
- Go to Settings โ Update firmware.
- Click on "Check Updates."
- If a new version is available, download and install it.
Important: during the upgrade, do not turn off the router from power or press buttons. The process takes 3-7 minutes, after which the device will restart automatically. If something goes wrong (for example, the lights go out), use emergency recovery:
- Download the firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi Support website.
- Rename the file to miwifi.bin and place it in the root of the flash drive (FAT32 format).
- Connect the flash drive to the router, press the Reset button and turn on the power. Hold the button for 10-15 seconds until recovery begins.
If the router started to โglutchโ (itself reboots, โlosesโ the device), try resetting the settings:
- ๐ Software reset: Settings โ Additionally. โ Restore factory settings.
- ๐ง Hardware reset: Reset button for 10 seconds (see instructions above).
โ ๏ธ Warning: After reset, all settings (including Wi-Fi passwords and QoS rules) will be lost. Pre-save screenshots of important parameters or export the configuration to a file (Settings) โ Backup).
Additional chips: Mesh network, IPv6 and remote access
Xiaomi routers support a number of advanced features that many people donโt know about:
- ๐ Mesh: If you have multiple Xiaomi routers, you can connect them into a single network without seams:
IPv6
Settings โ Internet โ IPv6
Remote access
Mi Wi-Fi
- Register with Mi Account and connect the router.
- Enable the option Remote control in the settings.
If you see an unfamiliar device, block it with the button to Prohibit.
