Xiaomiβs Wi-Fi amplifier is one of the most popular solutions for expanding wireless coverage in homes and apartments, but even with a device as simple as this, users face problems: the repeater does not connect to the main router, the speed drops by half, or the network is constantly broken. In this article, we will discuss all the stages of setting up, from basic connection to advanced parameters like selecting a channel and setting up a Mesh network.
We tested the instructions on Mi WiFi Repeater 2, Mi WiFi Repeater Pro and Xiaomi AIoT Router AC1200 (in repeater mode). All steps are relevant for firmware 2023-2026. If you have a different model, check compatibility in the table below.
Important: Before setting up, make sure your main router supports 802.11n/ac/ax (depending on the repeater model). Older 802.11g devices may not work or limit speeds to 54 Mbps.
1. Preparation for setting up: what to check before connecting
Before you turn the repeater into the socket, follow 3 mandatory steps:
- π Location of the socket: the repeater should be in the zone of confident reception of the signal of the main router (at least 2-3 divisions of the network indicator on the smartphone.
- πΆ Wi-Fi channel: If your router is running on automatic channel selection, lock it manually (e.g., channel 6 for 2.4GHz.
- π Network password: remember or write down your current Wi-Fi password, which you'll need to sync. WPA3, temporarily switch to WPA2-PSK (Not all Xiaomi repeaters support WPA3).
Also check that the router turned off the client isolation mode (AP Isolation) β otherwise devices connected to the repeater will not see other gadgets on the local network (for example, a printer or Smart TV).
β οΈ Note: If your router uses 160 MHz channel width in the 5 GHz band, the Xiaomi repeater may not connect. Forced set the width of 20 MHz or 40 MHz in the router settings.
2. Basic setup via the Mi WiFi mobile application
The easiest way to set up a repeater is through the official app, download it for Android or iOS.
Step-by-step:
- Connect the repeater to the outlet next to the router (up to 1 meter away).
- Wait until the indicator on the device starts flashing blue (setting mode).
- Open the Mi WiFi app, click "Add Device" β "Repiter".
- Select the network you want to connect to and enter the password.
- Wait for sync to complete (30-60 seconds) and the indicator will light up green, setting is complete.
If the application does not find the repeater:
- π Reboot the repeater (pull out and paste back into the socket).
- π± Make sure your smartphone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled (the app uses Bluetooth for initial setup).
- π Check that the smartphone is connected to the same network as the repeater.

3. Setup via web interface: for advanced users
If the application is not working or you need advanced settings, use the repeater web interface.
- Connect to the repeater network (its name will be the same) Xiaomi_Repeater_XXXX).
- Open your browser and go to 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- Enter the username and password (by default β admin and admin, if not changed).
The web interface has options that are not available in the application:
- π‘ Range selection: Forced use of 2.4GHz or 5GHz (useful if the router supports both bands but the repeater only clings to one).
- π Mode of operation: Amplifier (Repeater), Access Point (AP) or the Client (Client).
- π Filtration MAC-Addresses: Restriction of access for certain devices.
For stable work, we recommend:
Settings β Wireless network β Mode:
- Channel: fixed (e.g. 6 for 2.4 GHz)
Channel width: 20 MHz (for 2.4 GHz) or 40 MHz (for 5 GHz)
Standard: 802.11n/ac (depending on model)How to reset the repeater to factory settings?
4. Speed optimization: why the repeater brakes and how to fix it
The main problem with all Wi-Fi repeaters is that they drop 2 times faster, and that's because they're simultaneously receiving and transmitting a signal over the same channel, but you can improve the speed.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Speed below 10 Mbps | Weak signal from the router | Move the repeater closer to the router or use 5GHz (if supported) |
| Permanent connection breaks | Automatic channel change on the router | Lock the channel in the settings of the router and repeater |
| Low speed at 5GHz | Interference from other networks | Use channels 36β48 or 149β165 (less loaded) |
| The repeater does not connect to the router | Incompatible Wi-Fi Standards | Update the repeater firmware or change the standard on the router to 802.11n |
Critical error: if the repeater Xiaomi Mi WiFi Repeater 2 connects to the router, but does not give the Internet, check the settings DHCP. In the repetitor's web interface, go to the Network β LAN and make sure that IP-The repeater address is in the same subnet as the router (e.g, 192.168.1.X, if the router has IP 192.168.1.1).
π‘
If the repeater is unstable, try turning off the Beamforming function on the router, which sometimes conflicts with signal amplifiers.
5. Set up a Mesh network with Xiaomi routers
If you have a Xiaomi AIoT Router AX3600, AX6000 or AC2100 router, you can create a Mesh network with a repeater for smooth roaming between access points.
- Update the router and repeater firmware to the latest version.
- In the routerβs web interface, go to Settings β Mesh-network.
- Click Add Device and follow the instructions (the repeater must be in Configuration Mode).
The advantages of the Mesh network:
- π Automatic switching between router and repeater without breaking the connection.
- πΆ A single name for the network (SSID) Password for all access points.
- π‘οΈ Centralized management of all devices through the Mi WiFi app.
β οΈ Note: In Mesh mode, the Xiaomi Mi WiFi Repeater 2 does not support the 5GHz band. Use only 2.4GHz or upgrade to 1.2.47 and higher.
6. Common mistakes and their solutions
Even after setting up properly, users face problems. Here are the most common:
- π« Repiter not turned on: check the power supply (use only the original adapter) 5V/1A). If the indicator does not burn, the device is malfunctioning.
- π΄ Red light: no connection to the router. Move the repeater closer or check the network password.
- π‘ Yellow indicator: weak signal. Try changing the channel on the router or reducing the channel width to 20 MHz.
- π Repiter is constantly rebooted: reset the settings to factory and update the firmware.
If the Xiaomi Mi WiFi Repeater Pro repeater doesn't save the settings after the reboot, it's a sign of a file system failure.
- Reset the device to factory settings.
- Connect to it via cable (LAN port) and update the firmware manually via the web interface.
- Use firmware files only from the official Xiaomi website.
π‘
If the repeater is unstable at 5GHz, try turning off the MU-MIMO function on the router. It may conflict with some models of Xiaomi amplifiers.
7. Alternative ways of using repeater
Xiaomi's repeater can be used to enhance Wi-Fi, but here are 3 non-obvious scenarios:
- π₯οΈ Wired connection of devices: if the repeater has a port LAN (For example, Mi WiFi Repeater Pro, connect to it Smart TV, videogame.
- π‘ Client mode: The repeater connects to the Wi-Fi router and distributes the Internet over cable (useful for devices without Wi-Fi, such as an old printer).
- π Guest network: set up a separate network for guests with a speed limit on the repeater (available in the web interface).
For Client mode:
