The Xiaomi Router 4 (or Mi Wi-Fi Router 4) is one of the most popular network devices from the Chinese brand, combining affordable prices and advanced features. However, even with such an easy-to-use gadget, users often have questions: how to connect it to the provider, configure dual-band Wi-Fi, protect the network from hacking or fix connection problems. This article will help you understand all the nuances from basic settings to hidden firmware capabilities.
The Xiaomi Router 4 is based on MiWiFi firmware, which is updated regularly but doesn’t always have an intuitive interface in Russian. We’ll go through every step from physical cables to fine-tuning QoS, guest networking, and even alternative firmware like Padavan. And if you’re facing typical problems like a router not giving away the internet or constantly rebooting, you’ll find solutions at the end of the article.
So we're going to set up. Let's start with the simplest thing: connecting the device and logging in to the web first.
1. Preparation and physical connection of the router
Before you set up the Xiaomi Router 4, you need to connect it to the network and your computer correctly, a step that is often missed, but the stability of the device depends on it.
Complete with the router comes:
- 📦 The router Xiaomi Router 4 (white or black, depending on the version)
- 🔌 Power supply on 12V/1A (It is important to use the original to avoid overheating)
- 📶 Patch cord (network cable) RJ-45) 1 metre
- 📄 Short instructions (usually in Chinese, but with pictograms)
Connect the router according to the following scheme:
- Insert the power supply in the socket and connect it to the connector DC 12V router.
- Network cable from the provider (if you have wired Internet) connect to the port WAN (It's usually blue).
- If you configure from a computer, connect it to one of the ports. LAN (yellow connectors) patch cord from the kit.
- Press the power button (if you have one on your model) or wait for the automatic turn on.
⚠️ Note: If you have Internet using PPPoE technology (for example, Rostelecom or Dom.ru), do not connect the provider's cable until the configuration is completed - you first need to enter the username and password in the web interface.
After connecting, wait until the indicators on the front panel of the router stabilize:
- 🟢 Green/blue LED – router is on and ready to configure.
- 🔴 Red or flashing orange – connection error (check cables or power supply).
- 🟡 Yellow flashing – the firmware is loaded (wait 1-2 minutes).
2. First login to the web interface and basic setting
After you've physically connected, you need to go to the router control panel.
- Open any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) on a computer or phone connected to a router via cable or Wi-Fi (the network will be called the “WEB” browser). Xiaomi_XXXX).
- In the address bar, type 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com and click Enter.
- If the page doesn’t open, check what your device has received. IP-address from the router (in the network settings must be a type address) 192.168.31.X).
When you first sign in, the system will prompt you to create an account or log in through Mi Account. We recommend that you choose the option “Setting up without an account” (if available), so as not to link the router to your personal profile Xiaomi.
Create an administrator password (minimum 8 characters)|Select the mode of operation (router or repeater)|Set up a main Wi-Fi network (name and password)|Save settings and restart the device-->
At the stage of setting up Wi-Fi:
- 🔄 Select dual mode (2.4 GHz) + 5 GHz if you want to use both bands.
- 🔒 Set a strong password for Wi-Fi (recommended) WPA2-PSK password-plate+ symbolism).
- 📡 Turn off the Hide Network option – it doesn’t increase security, but makes it harder to connect new devices.
Once you save the settings, the router will reboot, so you can connect to Wi-Fi and check your Internet access, and if you don't have Internet, go to the next section, where we'll sort out the ISP connection settings.
3. Internet Connection (WAN) setting
If after the basic setting, the Internet does not work, most likely, you need to manually specify the connection parameters to the provider.
- Go to the web interface (192.168.31.1).
- Go to the Internet section or «WAN».
- Choose the type of connection your provider uses.
The most common types of connection:
| Type of connection | When used | What data are needed |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic IP (DHCP) | Most home networks (Beeline, MTS, TTK) | Nothing (IP issuing automatically) |
| Static IP | Corporate networks or some provider tariffs | IP-Address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS |
| PPPoE | Rostelecom, Dom.ru, some regional providers | Login and password (specified in the contract) |
| L2TP/PPTP | Rarely, usually for VPN-connection | Server, login, password, sometimes IP-address |
For PPPoE (the most difficult case), enter:
- 🔑 Login and password from the contract with the provider (registration is important!).
- 🔄 Check the box "Connect automatically».
- 📡 In the field «MTU» Please note 1472 (the best value for most providers).
⚠️ Note: If the Internet does not appear after saving the settings, check whether the provider blocks the connection to the Internet. MAC-In this case, you need to clone the address. MAC-address of your old router or computer in settings «MAC Clone».
If you’re doing it right, but the internet still doesn’t work, try:
- 🔄 Reboot the router (by a button on the back or via a web interface).
- 📞 Call the provider and specify the type of connection (sometimes the contract is incorrectly specified).
- 🔧 Reset the router to factory settings (press the Reset button for 10 seconds) and repeat the setting.
💡
If you GPON (Fiber Optics, Xiaomi 4 router will not connect directly – you need an additional ONT-terminal from the provider, in which case, connect the router to ONT cable-to-port WAN.
4. Wi-Fi optimization: channel selection, signal power and Mesh network
By default, the Xiaomi Router 4 selects Wi-Fi channels automatically, but this is not always optimal - especially in apartment buildings where there are many neighbors with routers.
First, check the loading of channels using the applications:
- 📱 Wi-Fi Analyzer (Android)
- 🍎 NetSpot (iOS/macOS)
- 💻 inSSIDer (Windows)
If you see your channel (e.g., 6 or 11 in the 2.4GHz band) overloaded, change it manually:
- Go to "Wi-Fi settings» → «Additional settings».
- Select the range (2.4G or 5G).
- In the Channel field, specify free (for example, 1, 13 or 36 for 5 GHz).
- Save and restart the router.
Other useful settings to improve Wi-Fi:
| Parameter | Recommended value | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Channel width (2.4G) | 20 MHz | Reduces interference from neighbors, but reduces maximum speed |
| Channel width (5G) | 40 MHz or 80 MHz | Increases speed, but can be unstable over long distances |
| Transmission power | High (or 100%) | Increases the radius of coverage, but can overheat the router |
| Beamforming | Included. | Focuses the signal on connected devices |
If you have a large apartment or house, you can combine several Xiaomi routers into a Mesh network.
- Connect the second router to the main cable or Wi-Fi (Repeater mode).
- In the web interface of the main router, go to “Work Mode» → «Mesh-network».
- Follow the setup wizard, wait for the synchronization.
⚠️ Note: In Mesh mode, both routers must be the same model or at least on the same firmware. 4A, There may be problems with roaming.
How do you turn on the guest network?
5.Security: Protection against hacking and access control
Xiaomi routers are often criticized for vulnerabilities in the firmware, so setting up security is a must.
- 🔐 Change your administrator password (often empty or admin by default). Use a combination of letters, numbers and characters.
- 🚫 Disable remote access in "System settings» → «Remote management (if not used).
- 🔄 Update the firmware to the latest version (in "Update»).
For advanced protection:
- Energize the firewall ("Security» → «Firewall) and set the level “High».
- Set up access control by MAC: Settings → Wireless mode → Filter MAC-Add only your devices to the whitelist.
- Turn it off. WPS (Vulnerable Protocol) in "Wi-Fi settings» → «WPS».
Important: The firmware of the Xiaomi Router 4 before version 2.28.51 had a vulnerability that allowed you to access the router via Telnet. After the update, be sure to check if port 23 is closed in the security settings.
If you want to completely eliminate the risk of hacking, consider alternative firmware:
- 🛡️ Padavan – Optimized firmware with advanced security settings.
- 🔧 OpenWRT – for experienced users, supports VPN and advanced firewall.
💡
Even with the most reliable firmware, change your Wi-Fi password regularly (every 3-6 months) and keep track of your connected devices in the Customers section.
