Why You Need a Wi-Fi Amplifier and How It Works
A weak Wi-Fi signal in distant rooms, constant connection breaks when watching videos or online games - a familiar situation? Xiaomi Mi Range Extender Pro solves these problems by expanding the coverage area of your wireless network. This compact repeater (repeater) picks up the signal from the main router and relays it further, increasing the range to 120 m2 in ideal conditions.
Unlike mesh systems, which require complex setup and synchronization of multiple devices, the Mi Range Extender Pro works on a plug-and-forget principle. It supports 802.11ac standards (up to 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz) and is equipped with two antennas for a stable signal. But for the repeater to work efficiently, it needs to be installed and configured correctly β more on that.
Preparation for the setup: what will be needed
Before you start, make sure you have:
- πΆ Main router with Wi-Fi enabled (password and network name must be known).
- π 220V near the weak signal area (but not further than 10 meters from the router).
- π± Smartphone or computer to set up (any device with a browser is suitable).
- π§ Ethernet Cable (optional, for alternative connectivity).
Important: Mi Range Extender Pro does not replace the router, but only expands its network. If you have problems with the Internet from the provider (for example, low speed on the cable), the repeater will not solve them - it only relays what it receives from the main router.
How to connect the repeater to the router
There are two main methods of setting up Xiaomi Mi Range Extender Pro:
- WPS (recommended) is the fastest way if your router supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup technology.
- Through the web interface β a universal method, works with all routers.
If you have a WPS button on the back of your router (usually signed), use the first one, it won't take more than a minute. Otherwise, move on to the second one.
What is WPS and is it safe to use it?
Configuring via WPS: step-by-step instructions
This is a method that works for 90 percent of today's routers.
- Connect the Mi Range Extender Pro to the outlet next to the router (no further than 1-2 meters).
- Wait until the indicator on the body of the repeater flashes orange (connection waiting mode).
- Press the WPS button on the router (usually hold for 3-5 seconds).
- For 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the repeater (located on the side).
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds. If the indicator on the repeater turns blue, the connection is successful.
If the indicator continues to flash orange or turn red, repeat the procedure.
- π΄ WPS disabled in router settings (must be enabled in web interface).
- π΄ The distance between the devices is too large.
- π΄ Router doesn't support WPS (Check the model in the instructions).
The indicator on the repeater is burning blue | New network with the suffix " EXT" appeared in the list of Wi-Fi | Internet speed on devices in the coverage area has increased

Setup via web interface: detailed guide
If the WPS didn't work or it didn't work on the router, use this method. It's universal, but it requires more action.
- Connect the repeater to the socket next to the computer or smartphone.
- On the device, connect to the network. Xiaomi_Extender_XXXX (default password is listed on the repeater sticker).
- Open your browser and go to http://miwifi.com or 192.168.0.1.
- Enter the login and password (by default) admin/admin, unless changed).
- Select your main Wi-Fi network from the list and enter its password.
- Press Save and wait for the repeater reboot (1-2 minutes).
Important: If the repeater doesnβt connect to the router after saving the settings, check if your main network uses special characters (for example, β#β, β$β) in the name or password. Some Xiaomi firmwares do not properly process such characters β replace them with letters or numbers.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| It doesn't open miwifi.com | Repiter doesn't give away a time network | Reset the settings with the Reset button (hold 10 seconds) |
| There is no main network on the list | Weak signal from the router | Move the repeater closer to the router (within 3-5 meters) |
| After saving, the red indicator flashes | Wrong Wi-Fi password | Check the symbol register and special signs |
Optimal repeater placement: where to put for maximum signal
Even a well-tuned repeater will not work well if it's not placed well.
- π‘ Overlap zone: The repeater must be where the main router signal is still there, but is already weak (2-3 divisions on the smartphone.
- β‘ Power: Avoid network filters -- plug directly into the socket. Some filters cause interference.
- π« Obstacles: concrete walls, metal doors, aquariums and mirrors weaken the signal.
- π Height: optimally at 1-1.5 meters from the floor (for example, on a shelf or table).
A simple test: connect your smartphone to the repeater network (Name network EXT) and walk around your house. If speed drops in some areas, try moving your device 1-2 meters toward the router.
If your house has several floors, place the repeater on the landing or in the hallway of the first floor - so the signal will be evenly distributed up and down.

Additional settings: how to improve the work of the repeater
After the basic setup, you can optimize the Mi Range Extender Pro through the web interface (miwifi.com). Go to the Additional settings section and pay attention to:
- π Operating mode: Repiter is on by default. If you need a separate network (for example, for guests), select Access Point.
- πΆ Wi-Fi Channel: If your home has a lot of networks, choose a channel manually (e.g. 6 or 11 for 2.4GHz) to avoid interference.
- π Protection: Enable Filtering MAC-Addresses if you want to limit access to the repeater only to your devices.
- β‘ Energy saving: Disconnect if you notice that the repeater sometimes βfalls asleepβ and loses the connection.
It's also useful to update the repeater firmware.
- Go to System Settings. β Update of the PO.
- Click Check for updates.
- If a new version is available, download and install it (donβt turn off the repeater during the process!).
Regular firmware updates fix errors and improve connection stability, and the repeater will restart automatically after the update.

Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after you've set it up properly, you can have difficulties, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
β οΈ Warning: If the repeater is constantly rebooting (flashing green and red in a circle), this may indicate a malfunction of the power supply.
| Symptoms. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Repiter's off. | Failure to feed or overheat | Check the socket, let the device cool for 10 minutes |
| EXT network goes missing | Conflict IP-router | Reset the repeater settings and set up again |
| Low speed through the repeater | 2.4 GHz channel overload | Switch your router to 5GHz (if it supports) |
| The repeater does not save the settings | Firmware failure | Update the software via the web interface |
If none of these methods worked, try resetting the repeater to the factory settings.
- Press and hold the Reset button (on the back) for 10 seconds.
- Wait until the indicator flashes orange quickly.
- Release the button β the device will restart and return to factory parameters.
β οΈ Warning: After resetting, all settings (including Wi-Fi password) will be deleted. You will have to reconfigure the repeater as you first connected.
