Why is setting up via phone more convenient?
Xiaomi Mi Router 4A (and its modifications, such as the 4A Gigabit Edition or 4A 100M Edition) has become one of the most popular budget solutions for home Internet due to its ease of installation and stable operation. Set it up through a smartphone not only faster than a computer, but also more convenient: you do not need to search for a network cable, connect a laptop or understand the web interface.
Unlike the classic browser (at 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com), Mi Wi-Fi automatically detects the router model, offers optimal security settings, and even checks the signal quality in different rooms.
But there are nuances: for example, if you have a router with firmware for the Chinese market (with the CN suffix in the title), the mobile application may not support Russian in the interface, in which case you will have to use alternative methods, which we will also talk about.
What will you need to set up?
Before you start, make sure you have everything you need:
- π± Smartphone on Android 5.0+ or iOS 10.0+ Access to the App Store or Google Play.
- π Xiaomi Mi Router router 4A (any version) with a power supply.
- π‘ Cable from the provider (if the connection is PPPoE, static) IP dynamically IP).
- π Data for Internet connection (login / password from the provider, if required).
If you are setting up a router for the first time, look for the lights on the case: orange flashing light means the device is ready to set up, and blue means that it is already connected to the network. If the indicator is not on at all, check the power or try another cable.
Step 1: Installation of the Mi Wi-Fi application
The official Xiaomi router management app is called Mi Wi-Fi (not to be confused with Mi Home, which is designed for smart homes).
- π€ For Android: A link to Google Play.
- π For iOS: link to the App Store.
Once installed, open the app and allow access to geolocation (to determine regional settings) and notifications (to receive notifications about connecting new devices). If the app requests registration through Mi Account, you can skip this step - it will work without an account.
π‘
If the application does not find the router, try to connect to its temporary network. Xiaomi_XXXX (The password is usually shown on the sticker at the bottom of the device).
Step 2: Connecting the router to the Internet
It depends on the type of connection your provider uses, and 90 percent of the time it's PPPoE (requires a login and password) or dynamic IP (automatic connection), and less often it's static IP, L2TP or PPTP, and you can specify the type in the contract with the provider or by calling in support.
Connect the provider's cable to the WAN port (usually highlighted in blue) on the back of the router.
- Open the Mi Wi-Fi app.
- Click Add Add the device β router.
- Select the Xiaomi Mi Router 4A from the list.
- Follow the tips of the customization wizard.
In the process of choosing the type of connection, specify the one that your provider uses. If you are not sure, select Autodetermination - the router will try to connect yourself.
Make sure that the providerβs cable is connected to the WAN| port
Check that the power indicator is on orange |
Connect your phone to the router's temporary network |
Find out the username/password from the provider in advance (if PPPoE)|
Disconnect the mobile Internet on your phone (so that there are no conflicts)-->
Step 3: Set up a Wi-Fi network
Once you're connected to the Internet, the app will suggest you set up your wireless network.
- π Create a strong password (minimum 8 characters, with numbers and letters).
- πΆ Select the optimal channel (if the router supports 5GHz, turn it on for less interference).
- π‘οΈ Set up encryption. WPA2-PSK (safest option).
- π Shut down. WPS (This is a vulnerable protocol that can be hacked).
Network Name (SSID) is better made unique, not to be confused with neighboring routers. Avoid personal information in the name (for example, Ivanov q5). If you have many devices in your home that support 5 GHz, create a separate network for this range - so the speed will be higher.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Network mode | 11n/ac mixed (or 11ax if supported) | It is compatible with old and new devices. |
| Channel width | 20/40 MHz (for 2.4 GHz) or 80 MHz (for 5 GHz) | Greater width = higher speed, but more interference. |
| Max. Devices. | 64 (by default) | It's enough for the house, but you can increase it to 128. |
| Guest network | Turn on | Good for friends β restricts access to the local network. |
π‘
Use different passwords for the main and guest networks, which will protect your personal data, even if the guest accidentally shares access.
Step 4: Additional settings (for experienced)
Basic setup is usually enough, but if you want to optimize your network, look at the additional section in the Mi Wi-Fi app.
- π Set up traffic prioritization (e.g., give maximum speed to YouTube or online games).
- π Set a Wi-Fi shutdown schedule (good for kids).
- π Include traffic statistics (to see which devices consume the most data).
- π Activate IPv6 (If your provider supports).
One of the most useful tools is a real-time speed test, which shows how well your Internet is up to the ISP's rate, and if you're not up to speed, try:
- Reboot the router.
- Change the Wi-Fi channel manually (in the Wireless Mode settings).
- Disconnect the extra devices from the network.

Step 5: Update firmware and security
Xiaomi routers regularly receive firmware updates that fix vulnerabilities and improve stability.
- Open Mi Wi-Fi β Router settings β Firmware update.
- If a new version is available, click Update.
- Do not turn off the router power during the process (this may cause the device to blink).
For additional protection:
- π Enable the firewall in security settings.
- π« Disable remote control (if not used).
- π Check the list of connected devices and remove unknowns.
π‘
If the router gets worse after the upgrade, you can roll back to the previous firmware. To do this, download the old version from miwifi.com and download it manually through the web interface (192.168.31.1).
β οΈ Note: If your Xiaomi router 4A purchased in China (version) CN), firmware updates can reset to factory settings. Before updating, back up to Settings β Backup.
Typical problem solving
Even with a simple router, sometimes there are difficulties. Here are the most common solutions.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| It's not connected to the Internet. | Incorrect PPPoE settings or cable not inserted WAN-port | Check the cable and resave the provider settings |
| Weak Wi-Fi signal | Interfering with other networks or the router is in an uncomfortable place | Change the channel to 1, 6 or 11 (2.4 GHz) or move the router. |
| The application does not find the router | Phone is connected to another network or router is not in setup mode | Connect to the network. Xiaomi_XXXX and reboot the router. |
| Low speed on Wi-Fi | Outdated firmware or too many connected devices | Update the firmware and limit the number of devices |
If the router doesn't respond to the settings at all, try resetting it to factory settings.
- Press and hold the Reset button (on the back) for 10-15 seconds.
- Wait until the indicator flashes orange.
- Configure the router again through the application.
β οΈ Warning: Reset removes all settings, including Wi-Fi password and ISP data. IP, Write down the parameters in advance!
