Xiaomi modems are not just Internet sharing devices, but full-fledged network hubs with advanced traffic management, parental control and support for Mesh networks. 4A Gigabit, Mi AIoT Router AX3600 or 4G-MiFi modem β require the right initial setup to unleash its potential.Without a competent configuration, you risk unstable connection, security vulnerabilities or limited speeds even at a 1Gbps tariff.
In this article, weβll take a look at the whole process, from physical connectivity to hidden MiWiFi features that the manufacturer doesnβt advertise, how to avoid common bugs (like dual NAT on a cascade connection), what DNS settings will speed up site loading, and why Game Accelerator mode isnβt really always good for gamers. And if you have a Xiaomi Home-enabled modem, weβll show you how to integrate it into the smart home ecosystem without losing performance.
1. Unpacking and physical connection of the modem
Before you turn on the Xiaomi modem in the socket, check the equipment.
- π¦ The modem itself (e.g. Mi Router) 4C or Mi AIoT Router AX6000)
- π Power supply (pay attention to the stress: 12V/1A or 12V/2A model-wise)
- π‘ Removable antennas (if it is a model with external antennas, for example, AX3600)
- π Brief instruction in Chinese (Russian version is not usually available, but it is not a problem)
- π Patch cord RJ-45 (if not 4G-modem)
Connect the modem strictly in this sequence:
- Insert the antennae (if they are removable) and tighten until you click.
- Connect the power supply to the modem, but do not turn it on in the socket.
- If you have ADSL or fiber optic, insert the providerβs cable into the WAN port (usually highlighted in blue).
- For 4G-Modem (MiFi) insert SIM-card to slot (contacts upwards!).
- Connect the modem to the socket and wait until the power indicator stops flashing (usually 30-60 seconds).
π‘
If the WAN doesn't light up after you plug in the ISP cable, try rebooting the modem by holding the Reset button for 10 seconds, often solving the problem of an unidentified cable.
Notice the location of the modem. For stable signal:
- π‘ Place it on high. 1-1.5 floor-foot.
- π« Avoid proximity to microwaves, cordless phones, and metal surfaces.
- π If the modem supports Mesh, for example, AX3600), The second unit must not be further than 10 meters from the main.
2. Initial configuration via the Mi WiFi mobile application
The easiest way to set up a Xiaomi modem is to use the official Mi WiFi app (not to be confused with Mi Home!).
- π± Android
- π iOS
After installation:
- Open the app and select Add the device.
- Click the router (even if you have one). 4G-modem).
- Hold the phone to the modem β the application will automatically determine the model by Bluetooth.
- Enter the password from the sticker on the bottom of the modem (usually an 8-digit combination).
Follow the setup wizard further:
- Select Router Mode (if the modem is connected to the provider) or Repetitor Mode (if it expands another network).
- Specify the type of connection: π Dynamic IP (DHCP) β for most providers (Rostelecom, MTS). π’ Static IP β if the provider has issued a fixed address. π PPPoE β to enter a login / password (Beeline, Dom.ru).
SSID
WPA2-PSK
Internet connection (WAN indicator is lit green)
The speed in the application coincides with the providerβs tariff
Devices connect to Wi-Fi without errors
The Guest Network function is disabled (if not required)-->
If the application gives an error "I failed to connect to the router", try:
- π Reboot the modem and phone.
- πΆ Connect to the modem network directly (its name and password on the sticker).
- π οΈ Reset the settings with the Reset button (hold 10 seconds).
3. Setup via web interface: hidden functions
Xiaomi's modem web interface offers more options than a mobile app.
- Connect to the modem network (via Wi-Fi or cable).
- Open your browser and type in 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- Enter the login and password (by default β admin and password from the sticker).
In the menu Additional settings (Advanced Settings) pay attention to:
| Section | Function | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Network β WAN | MTU | Set 1472 for PPPoE or 1500 for DHCP (solves communication breaks). |
| Wireless networking β 5G | Canal | Select 36-48 or 149-165 for minimal interference. |
| DNS | Alternative DNSs | Use 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) to speed up loading. |
| firewall β DMZ | DMZ-host | Only include for game consoles or IP-security cameras (security risk!). |
Critical setting for gamers: disable the Game Accelerator in the Qos section if you play via a VPN or use cloud services like GeForce NOW.
To optimize Wi-Fi:
- Go to Wireless Network β Settings 2.4G/5G.
- Set channel width (Channel Width): For 2.4 GHz: 20 MHz (best stability). For 5 GHz: 80 MHz (maximum speed).
WPA3
4.Tune in. 4G-Xiaomi MiFi modem
Xiaomi MiFi modems (e.g. MiFi 2 or MiFi) 4G Router has its own features. SIM-map:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi modem network (name and password on the sticker).
- Open 192.168.1.1 in your browser.
- Enter the login/password (by default β admin/admin).
β οΈ Note: If after changing the settings, the modem stopped issuing the Internet, check whether it has gone astray. VLAN ID (It's usually a 1, but sometimes it takes 10 or 20.
6.Setting up parental controls and guest network
To limit access to the Internet for children or guests:
- Go to Additional Settings β Parental control.
- Add the device to the MAC-address (you can find it in the list of connected devices).
- Set limits: π Access time (for example, 9:00 to 21:00). π Blocked websites (social networks, games). π₯ Traffic limit (for example, 2 GB per day).
For the guest network:
- Go to Wi-Fi. β Guest network.
- Enable it and set a separate name (SSID) and password.
- Limit speeds to 10 Mbps so guests donβt overload the channel.
- Set an automatic shutdown timer (for example, after 4 hours).
Important: The guest network does not have access to local devices (printers, NAS), which increases security.
β οΈ Attention: Parental control on Xiaomi modems bypasses VPN If your teen knows how to set them up, use specialized solutions like Kaspersky Safe Kids.
7. firmware update and recovery after failures
Xiaomi modem firmware updates automatically, but sometimes you need a manual update to check the version:
- Go to Status. β System system.
- Compare the version with the last one on the official website.
For manual updates:
- Download the firmware for your model (for example, miwifi_r4a_firmware_*.bin).
- Go to Additional Settings β Update the firmware.
- Download the file and wait for the reboot (5-10 minutes).
How to turn it on SSH-access?
8.Integration with Xiaomi ecosystem
If you have Xiaomi devices (lamps, cameras, robot vacuum cleaners), the modem can be linked to the Mi Home ecosystem:
- Open the Mi Home app.
- Click + β Add the device β Router.
- The scanner will automatically find the modem on the local network.
- Confirm the bundle (it may be necessary to enter a password from Wi-Fi).
After the bundle, you can:
- π Manage the Internet with the voice assistant Alice or Google Assistant.
- π See traffic statistics directly in Mi Home.
- π Automate Wi-Fi shutdown on schedule (e.g. overnight).
For IoT devices (smart sockets, sensors) it is recommended:
- πΆ Allocate a separate 2.4 GHz network for them (many IoT devices do not run on 5 GHz).
- π Disable Internet access for them (allow only local network) in the Firewall settings.
