Xiaomi’s modern devices have long gone beyond smartphones and taken a strong position in the networking segment. The brand’s routers are famous for their accessibility, stylish design and high performance, but their initial setup often raises questions among users accustomed to more familiar interfaces from other manufacturers. The router configuration process requires care, but it is not as complex as it may seem at first glance, if you know the right sequence of actions.
In this article, we will discuss all the steps, from the physical connection of cables to fine-tuning the wireless network. You will learn how to log into the control panel 192.168.31.1, choose the right type of connection for your provider and protect the home network from unauthorized access.
Preparation of equipment and physical connection
Before you go to the software part, you need to connect all the components of your home network correctly. Take out the Xiaomi router from the box and plug the power supply into the socket. Pay attention to the indicators: after turning on, the system LED should light up, usually it flashes yellow or orange, waiting for settings. If the indicator is blue right away, it may have already been set up before or has factory settings.
Next, take the Ethernet cable that comes with it, or any other serviceable cable of the CAT5e category and above, paste one end into a port signed as WAN (often highlighted in blue or yellow), and connect the second end to the corresponding port in your provider's modem or directly to the ISP's socket if the cable is run straight into the apartment.
For initial setup, it is strongly recommended to use a wired connection to a computer or laptop. Find any free LAN port on the back of the router and connect it with a cable to your PC network card. This will provide a stable communication channel without the risk of connection breakage, which is possible when you configure over Wi-Fi. If using a cable is not possible, find a sticker on the device’s case with the name of the wireless network (SSID) and password, connect to it from your phone or laptop.
- 🔌 Connect the router’s power supply to the power grid and wait for the system to load.
- 🌐 Connect the port. WAN router with provider cable or modem.
- 💻 Connect your computer to the port LAN cable for maximum stability.
- 📱 Or connect to the factory Wi-Fi network, the data is indicated on the sticker at the bottom of the device.
⚠️ Warning: Make sure your computer’s network card is set to receive automatically IP-address (DHCP). If you have previously prescribed a static IP-Manual address, this can block access to the router's web interface.
☑️ Pre-launch check
Entrance to the web interface of router management
Once you're physically connected, you need to access the device's operating system. Open any modern browser on the connected device. Enter the standard browser in the address bar. IP-Xiaomi router address: 192.168.31.1 Or miwifi.com. Click Enter. If the page doesn't load, check your settings. TCP/IP your network adapter – they should be in automatic address receipt mode.
When you first log in, the system will suggest you to choose the interface language. Although Russian is often on the list, for some models and firmware versions only English or Chinese is available. In this case, it is recommended to use a browser with a built-in page translator, such as Google Chrome, so as not to get confused in terms. After choosing a language, click the start button for settings, which may be called "Start", "Begin" or "Agree".
The system will automatically diagnose the network status, and if the router detects an Internet connection, it can immediately suggest settings, but most often it will require you to create a Mi Account or log in to an existing one, which is necessary to remotely manage the router through a mobile application and receive security updates. Without an account binding, some functions may not be available.
What happens if 192.168.31.1 does not open?
Selecting the connection type and setting up PPPoE
The most critical step is to set up a connection with the provider. The router can automatically determine the type of connection (Dynamic IP), but in many cases, especially for large providers in the CIS, manual data entry is required. In the list of connection types, select PPPoE if your provider requires a login and password to access the network. This data must be specified in your contract with the service provider.
In the window that opens, enter the provider's login and password. Be very careful: the system is sensitive to letter registers and unnecessary spaces. Often users confuse the password from the personal account on the provider's website and the password for connecting to the network (PPPoE) are different things. If you are not sure about the data, call the provider's technical support before saving the settings.
For those who use static IP-address, you need to select the appropriate item and manually enter IP-address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS-A single-digit error will result in no internet connection, even though the Wi-Fi network will work.
| Type of connection | Required data | Where to get information |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic IP (DHCP) | Not required (automatically) | By default, most providers |
| PPPoE | Login and password | Contract with the provider or technical support |
| Static IP | IP, Mask, Gateway, DNS | Contract with the provider (fixed address) |
| PPTP / L2TP | Login, password, server address | Rarely, specific corporate networks |
Setting up a Wi-Fi wireless network
Once you've successfully connected to the Internet, you need to configure the wireless signal broadcasting. In the Wi-Fi settings section, you'll see the network name (SSID) that contains the router model by default, but you'd better change it to a unique name so that neighbors don't get confused and you can easily identify your network. Xiaomi supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz standards.
Modern routers often offer a dual-band feature that combines two frequencies into a single network with the same name, which is convenient because the device chooses the best range. However, older gadgets or smart homes sometimes require separation of networks. In Wi-Fi settings, you can set separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, adding suffix like " 5G" to the name of the second network.
Pay special attention to the choice of password. Use a mixed register of letters, numbers and special characters. Password length should be at least 8 characters, but it is better to use 12 or more. The encryption protocol should be set to WPA2-PSK or WPA3 if all your devices support the new standard.
- 📡 Change the standard network name (SSID) understandable.
- 🔒 Set a complex password using a password generator.
- ⚙️ Select encryption mode WPA2/WPA3 maximum protection.
- 📶 If necessary, separate the frequencies of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
⚠️ Note: Do not use Cyrillic (Russian letters) in the Wi-Fi name or password. Many older devices (printers, cameras, smart sockets) may not see the network or be able to connect to it.
💡
Place the router in the middle of the apartment and lift it higher. Metal objects, mirrors and aquariums absorb Wi-Fi signal strongly, so avoid the router's neighborhood with them.
Administrator password setting and security
In addition to the Wi-Fi password, Xiaomi’s router requires you to set an administrator password to log in to settings. This is an important defense. By default, many users leave the field empty or use simple combinations, allowing attackers who connect to your network to change DNS settings or redirect traffic.
In the Administration or Settings section, find the password change location. Come up with a unique combination that is different from the Wi-Fi password. This will prevent someone from gaining full control of the router by knowing the password from a wireless network. It is also recommended that you disable the ability to control the router from an external network (WAN) if you do not need remote access.
Be sure to check the updates section. The router's firmware is its operating system and it may have vulnerabilities. From the Status or Settings menu, look for the Check for updates button. If a new version is available, update it by saving all the important settings beforehand.
💡
The administrator password and the Wi-Fi password are two different keys: one opens the router's settings, the other opens the Internet, and they have to be different and complex.
Advanced settings and mobile application
To take full advantage of your router’s potential, Xiaomi is recommended to install the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app (available on the App Store and Google Play), which allows you to manage your network from your smartphone, see connected devices, limit their speed and adjust guest access, and is especially useful for setting parental controls and prioritizing traffic for games or video calls.
In the advanced settings of the web-interface, you can find the configuration backup function, which will allow you to quickly restore all settings in the event of a router reset or a device replacement with a similar model. DHCP-Server: Static servers can be reserved IP-addresses for printers or security cameras so that they always have the same address on the local network.
If you use multiple Xiaomi routers, you can combine them into a single Mesh system, which will allow you to create seamless Wi-Fi coverage throughout the house, where devices will automatically switch between access points without breaking the connection.
- 📱 Download the Mi Wi-Fi app for easy management.
- 💾 Make a backup settings in the "System Status" section".
- 👨👩👧👦 Set up a guest network for visitors.
- 🚀 Use QoS to prioritize important tasks.
⚠️ Note: When updating the firmware through the application, make sure that the smartphone is connected to the network of this router, and not via the mobile Internet. 4G/5G, otherwise the process will be interrupted.
