Modern routers from Xiaomi deservedly enjoy popularity due to the combination of affordable prices and high performance. The process of initial configuration may seem difficult only at first glance, but in fact it takes no more than 10-15 minutes. Proper setting of the provider guarantees stable speed and no breaks in the future.
In this article, we'll go into detail about how you connect your device to the global network, and we'll look at both the wired connection and the wireless access point setting, and by following the step-by-step instructions, you can start your own hardware without calling the wizard.
Equipment preparation and cable inspection
Before you go to the software part, you need to physically connect all the components. The router should be installed in the center of the apartment or house for better radio coverage. Make sure that there is a 220V free power outlet nearby.
It usually comes with an Ethernet cable that is yellow or blue, and it's this wire that connects the WAN port on the router to the Internet cable output connector that the ISP has installed in your apartment, and if you use fiber optic, the signal comes to the terminal first, and from there the patch cord connects to the WAN port.
β οΈ Note: Do not confuse ports when connecting. The cable from the provider must be inserted in the port with the signature. WAN (or the Internet, not the Internet LAN, Otherwise, there will be no access to the network.
After connecting the cables, you need to supply power to the device. The indicators on the case should light up or start flashing. Usually the system indicator (System) lights up in white or blue after the router's operating system is fully loaded.
- π Connect the power supply to the socket and to the Power connector on the back panel.
- π Insert the provider cable into the port WAN (Internet).
- π» For initial configuration, connect your computer to any port. LAN cable or connect to Wi-Fi.
- π Wait until the system indicator stops flashing often and lights up with even light.
Entrance to the web management interface
To start the configuration, you need to get into the administrative panel of the device. This can be done from any connected gadget: a laptop, smartphone or tablet. Open any browser (Chrome, Safari, Yandex.Browser) and enter in the address bar IP-address.
The standard address for most Xiaomi and Redmi models is 192.168.31.1. Also often works domain name miwifi.com. If the address page does not open, check the settings of your computer's network card - they should be in automatic IP reception (DHCP) mode.
π‘
If the standard address doesnβt work, look at the sticker at the bottom of the router β thereβs always the exact IP and default login data.
When you first log in, the system will suggest you create an administrator password, remember this, as it will be used for all further setting changes, and the password must be strong to prevent unauthorized access to network management.
- π Open the browser and enter in the address bar 192.168.31.1.
- π Create and enter the administrator password (at least 6 characters).
- π Accept the user agreement by ticking the box.
- β Press the Start button or"OK" for the next step.
Selecting the type of connection and setting up WAN
The most important step is choosing the protocol your provider uses. Xiaomi router is often able to automatically determine the type of connection, but in some cases requires manual data entry. The main options are Dynamic IP (DHCP), static IP, PPPoE, L2TP or PPTP.
If the provider did not give you a login and password, most likely, the type is used. DHCP (Dynamic IP). In this case, the router will receive all the necessary addresses from the provider's equipment. If you were given a login and password contract, choose PPPoE and enter data from the contract.
In rare cases, when a static address is required, manual input is required. IP, subnet mask, gateway and DNS-This data is also provided by the Internet service provider in a technical contract.
| Parameter | Description | Where to find it. |
|---|---|---|
| Type of connection | Communication Protocol (DHCP, PPPoE) | Provider technical support |
| Login / Password | Data for authorization on the network | Contract or SMS from the provider |
| IP-address | Unique address of the device | Only for static IP |
| DNS | Name servers (e.g. 8.8.8.8) | Automatically or from the provider |
Setting up a Wi-Fi wireless network
Modern Xiaomi routers support work in two bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 5 GHz range provides higher speeds, but has a shorter range and passes through walls worse.
It is recommended to use a unique network name (SSID) to avoid confusion with neighbouring networks. Passwords should be complex, contain letters and numbers. Using simple passwords like "12345678" makes your network vulnerable to hacking and traffic theft.
β οΈ Note: When configuring two bands (2.4 and 5 GHz), you can combine them under one name (Dual-Band function), but for better compatibility of older devices, it is better to set different names.
In the Wi-Fi settings section, you can also choose the broadcast channel. In apartment buildings, there is often noise on the air. Using the Mi Wi-Fi application on a smartphone allows you to analyze the channels and choose the least loaded.
- π‘ Come up with a name for the network (SSID), easy-to-know.
- π Set the type of encryption WPA2-PSK or WPA3 maximum protection.
- π Create a complex password (minimum 8 characters).
- πΆ Split 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks if you have a lot of smart devices.
Router firmware update
The factory version of the software may be bugged or unoptimized, and once you set up the Internet, it is recommended to check for updates, which is a critical step to ensure security and stability.
You can update automatically through the web interface or through a mobile application, and it takes a few minutes to reboot the router, and you can't interrupt power at that point.
What to do if the update is suspended?
After updating, interfaces may change slightly, and the list of changes often includes new features or improvements in traffic processing speed. Regularly checking for updates is a good habit for any network equipment owner.
π‘
The firmware is the router's brain, and without the current version of the software, the device can run slower and be vulnerable to external attacks.
Additional features and guest network
Xiaomi routers have a lot of functionality that goes beyond just sharing the Internet. One of the most useful features is creating a guest network, which allows (guests) to connect to Wi-Fi, but isolates them from your main local network, where computers with files and printers are located.
There's also a speed limit feature for connected devices, parental controls, and Wi-Fi schedule settings, such as turning off wireless networks at night or while children are studying, all of which are available under Settings -> Wi-Fi or through the app.
For users of the smart home ecosystem, the function of creating a separate network for IoT devices (light bulbs, sockets, cameras) will be interesting, which unloads the main network and increases security, since IoT devices often have weak protection.
