Xiaomi routers have long been a popular choice thanks to a combination of affordable prices, stable operation and flexible settings. However, many users are limited to basic functions, without even realizing that through a web interface or a mobile application Mi Wi-Fi can fine-tune the network to your needs, from changing the Wi-Fi channel to reduce interference to speed limits for individual devices.
In this article, weโll look at all the key settings on Xiaomi routers (including the Mi Router 3/4/4A/4C/5/6 and AX- series) that really affect the speed, security, and stability of the Internet. Youโll learn how to change your Wi-Fi password, reconfigure DHCP, update your firmware without the risk of โbrickingโ, and what options should be touched only as a last resort.
1. Preparation for changing settings: entrance to the control panel
Before you start setting up, you need to connect to the router correctly. Xiaomi has two official ways of access:
- ๐ Through the web interface at 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com (works even without the Internet).
- ๐ฑ Through the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app (available for Android and iOS).
Logins require a login and a password. This is the default admin/admin combination, but if you've changed it, use current data. Importantly, if the router is connected to a Xiaomi account, you may need to log in through it, which is an additional security measure.
If the page does not open, check:
- ๐ Connect to the router via cable (it is recommended to use the LAN- port for the first entry).
- ๐ Reboot the router (hold the Reset button for 5 seconds if you forget your password).
- ๐ก๏ธ Disable VPN or proxies in the browser โ they can block access to the local network.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the router has previously been configured via the application, some settings in the web interface may be blocked. In this case, use only Mi Wi-Fi for changes.
2. Change Wi-Fi settings: network name, password and channel
The most popular setting is to change your network name (SSID) and password, which is useful if you suspect that your neighbors are connecting to your Wi-Fi, or just want to personalize your network.
- Go to Settings โ Wi-Fi (or Wireless Settings in English).
- In the Network Name field (2.4G/5G), enter a new name (e.g., MyXiaomiNet_5G).
- In the Password field, specify a new key (we recommend using at least 12 characters with numbers and special signs).
- Click Save and wait for the router to restart (it will take ~30 seconds).
To optimize speed, you should also change the Wi-Fi channel. By default, the router selects it automatically, but in apartment buildings this often leads to interference.
- ๐ถ For 2.4 GHz, choose channels 1, 6, or 11 โ they don't overlap.
- ๐ For 5 GHz, use the 36-48 or 149-165 channels (depending on your device support).
โ๏ธ Optimal Wi-Fi settings
If the speed hasnโt increased after the channel change, check the load with applications like Wi-Fi Analyzer (Android) or NetSpot (iOS/macOS) to show which channels are free in your area.
3.Security setting: encryption, guest access and parental controls
By default, Xiaomi routers use WPA2-PSK encryption, but newer models (such as the Mi Router 6 or AX3600) have a more secure WPA3 standard available.
- Go to Settings โ Wi-Fi โ Security.
- Select WPA3-PSK or WPA2/WPA3 Mixed (for compatibility with older devices).
- Save the settings and reconnect all the gadgets.
It is convenient for temporary guests to create a guest network with limited access to local resources (for example, printers or network disks).
- ๐ Set a separate password.
- โฑ๏ธ Limit network life (e.g., 2 hours).
- ๐ต Block access to router settings.
Parental controls in Xiaomi allow you to restrict Internet access for specific devices on a schedule or block unwanted sites. For example, you can block access to social networks from 22:00 to 8:ZXPH0003QXZ for a children's tablet. This is configured in the Parental Controls section, where you tie the MAC- device address to the rule.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If after WPA3 is turned on, some devices (such as older printers or smart light bulbs) stop connecting, return to WPA2-PSK or use WPA2/WPA3 Mixed mode.
4. Network optimization: DHCP, traffic priority and IPv6
By default, the router distributes IP-addresses automatically through DHCPBut sometimes it is useful to fix a certain IP behind the device (for example, for network storage or camera). โ DHCP:
- Find the desired device in the list of connected devices (by name or MAC- address).
- Press Reserve and specify static IP (e.g. 192.168.31.100).
For gamers or streamers, QoS (Quality of Service) is a feature that prioritizes traffic, and Xiaomi calls it Traffic Priority, and allows you to:
- ๐ฎ Allocate maximum speed for a game console or PC.
- ๐บ Limit traffic for smart TVs during online conferencing.
- ๐ฑ Block background updates on phones during business hours.
If your ISP supports IPv6, you can activate it in the Internet โ IPv6 section. This is the future standard, but so far most sites are IPv4-based, so there is no particular benefit to turning it on, except for testing.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP range | 192.168.31.100โ192.168.31.200 | Leaves free IP for static addresses. |
| DHCP lease time | 24 hours. | Balance between stability and flexibility. |
| QoS for games | Included. | Reduces ping in online shooters. |
| IPv6 | Disabled (if not necessary) | It may be in conflict with some providers. |
๐ก
If your devices lose access to the network after changing DHCP, restart them or manually update your IP (in Windows: ipconfig /release โ ipconfig /renew).
5. Firmware Update: How to Do It Safely
Xiaomi regularly releases firmware updates for its routers, fixing vulnerabilities and adding new features. However, an incorrect update can lead to a โbrickingโ of the device.
- ๐ Update only through official channels: web interface or Mi Wi-Fi application.
- ๐ Make sure the router is connected to an uninterruptible power source (or at least donโt disconnect it from the power outlet during the process).
- ๐ก Check the stability of the Internet connection โ if the update is interrupted, the router may fail.
Updating process:
- Go to Settings โ Update firmware.
- Click Check for updates.
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait until it is completed (the router will restart automatically).
If the router doesnโt turn on or flashes orange after the upgrade, try disaster recovery:
- Download the firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi website.
- Connect the router to the PC via cable, hold the Reset button for 10 seconds.
- Use the MiWiFi Repair Tool for flashing.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Do not install firmware from third-party developers (such as OpenWRT or Padavan) unless you are confident in your skills. This voids the warranty and may lead to unstable work.
What to do if the update is suspended?
6 Additional Features: Bridge Mode, VPN and IPTV
Xiaomi routers support several hidden features that can be useful in non-standard situations:
- ๐ Bridge Mode (WDS): allows you to expand Wi-Fi coverage by connecting a second wireless router. Configures to Settings โ Mode โ Bridge.
- ๐ VPN- Server: In Mi Router 4A Gigabit models and older, you can run PPTP or OpenVPN for remote access to your home network.
- ๐บ IPTV: If your ISP provides TV over the Internet, activate this mode in Settings โ IPTV and connect the console to the port LAN1.
To adjust the bridge mode will require:
- Specify MAC- address of the main router.
- Enter his Wi-Fi password.
- Disable DHCP on the secondary router (to avoid IP conflicts).
VPN on Xiaomi is more difficult to set up than on specialized devices, but allows, for example, to safely connect to the home network from a cafe or business trip.
- Activate the VPN- server in the settings.
- Download the configuration file and import it to the VPN- client on your phone or PC.
๐ก
Bridge mode reduces Wi-Fi speeds by 30 to 50 percent due to dual encryption of traffic. Use a wired connection (LAN-to-LAN) for maximum performance.
7. Resetting and troubleshooting
If the router started to work unstable after the changes (for example, breaks the connection or does not give IP), you can return it to factory settings in two ways:
- ๐ Software reset: in the web interface, go to Settings โ Additional โ Reset.
- ๐ง Hardware reset: Press and hold the Reset button on the back for 10-15 seconds (until the lights flash).
After the reset, you will need to reconfigure your Internet connection (enter data from the provider in the Internet section) and configure Wi-Fi. If the router does not respond to the reset, check:
- ๐ Does it come from a serviceable power supply (try another adapter with similar characteristics).
- ๐ Is there any physical damage to the board (e.g., swollen capacitors).
Frequent problems and their solutions:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No Internet access | Incorrect PPPoE/L2TP settings | Check the username/password from the provider |
| Wi-Fi works, but there is no internet. | DHCP failure | Restart the router and device |
| Low speed on Wi-Fi | congested channel | Change the channel in the settings (see section 2) |
| The router is offline. | Firmware failure | Emergency recovery (see section 5) |
