Forgot the Wi-Fi password on Xiaomi's router and don't know where to look? This is a familiar situation: the device is configured long ago, the data sticker is lost, and standard combinations like admin/admin don't fit. Unlike smartphones, where passwords are often synchronized with your account, routers store the security keys locally - and their recovery requires specific knowledge.
In this article, weβll look at all possible places where a Xiaomi router password can be written, from the obvious (a sticker on the case) to the hidden (configuration files via Telnet). You will also learn how to reset to factory settings if other methods have not worked, and what to do if the router is linked to a Mi Account account. 3/4/4A/4C, AX1800/3000/3600/6000 others.
Warning: some methods require access to the admin panel or physical interaction with the device. If the router is rented from the provider (for example, Rostelecom or Beeline), it is better to clarify the data from them - a self-reset can violate the connection settings.
1. Standard places where the password from the Xiaomi router is written
The manufacturer has a number of ways to store network data by default, starting with the simplest and most obvious.
The sticker on the routerβs body is the first thing to check out. Most Xiaomi models (especially budget ones like the Mi Router 4A) have a sticker on the back with:
- π€ SSID (name-name)
- π Password/Key (default)
- π IP-Address for the entrance to the admin panel (usually 192.168.31.1)
- π§ Login and password for authorization (most often admin)
If the sticker is worn or missing, try the standard combinations for your model:
| Model router | Wi-Fi Password by Default | Login/password of the admin |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Router 3/3C/3G | The Last 8 Symbols MAC-address (on sticker) | admin/admin |
| Mi Router 4/4A/4C | Unique set of 8 numbers and letters (on sticker) | admin/password from the sticker |
| AX1800/AX3000 | Random combination (on the label) | admin/indicated on the box |
| Redmi Router AC2100 | 8 character code (at the bottom of the device) | admin/empty or admin |
β οΈ Note: If you have previously changed your password through an admin panel or Mi Wi-Fi app, the data on the sticker is irrelevant.
2. How to find a password in the router's admin panel (192.168.31.1)
If you have access to the router's web interface, you can see the password in the settings.
- Connect to the router via cable (recommended) or Wi-Fi (if you remember the old password).
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 (or miwifi.com).
- Sign in with your admin login and password from the sticker (or your own if you changed).
- Go to Wi-Fi β Security settings (or Wireless β Security in English).
- The password will be displayed in the Password or Wireless Key field (possibly hidden under the dots β click on the eye icon). ποΈ).
If you canβt get into the admin:
- π Check that the cable is connected to the port. LAN (not WAN).
- π Try another browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
- π Restart the router (reset button for 10 seconds).
- π± If the router is linked to Mi Account, use the Mi Home app (see next section).
Important: Some firmware (like Padavan) may have different paths to settings. If you have custom firmware, look for Wireless β Basic or Network β Wi-Fi.
3. Recover password through the Mi Home app
Xiaomi routers are closely integrated with the Mi Home ecosystem. If the device is linked to your account, you can see the password in the app:
- Open Mi Home on your smartphone and log in.
- Find your router in the list of devices (Smart Home or Network).
- Select the Wi-Fi settings (or Wi-Fi Settings).
- The password will be displayed in the network password field (you may need to enter it). PIN-code from the Mi Account).
If the router is not displayed in Mi Home:
- π Reconnect it to your account: press the Reset button for 5 seconds, then add the device again via + β Add the device β router.
- π± Make sure your phone has Bluetooth and geolocation enabled β theyβre needed to find devices.
- π§ Check if the router is connected to the Internet (indicator) WAN must burn blue).
π‘
If you have multiple Xiaomi routers on the same network, Mi Home can show them as "Mi Router" and "Mi Router" and the password can be viewed on the main device.
β οΈ Note: After resetting the router settings, it will have to be re-associated with the Mi Account. If you forget the data from the Mi Account, restore it here, otherwise access to the settings will be limited.
4. Where the password is stored in the router configuration files
For advanced users, there is a way to extract the password directly from the router's configuration files. This works if you have access to Telnet/SSH or can connect to the router via FTP.
Instructions for models on the firmware MiWiFi (stock):
- Activate Telnet: Enter in the browser address bar: http://192.168.31.1/cgi-bin/luci/;stok={token}/api/xqsystem/set_factory_mode where {token} is the value from cookies (look for "stok" in the developer tools, Network tab)
- Connect via Telnet (e.g. via PuTTY): telnet 192.168.31.1 Login: root, password: admin (or empty).
- Run the command to view the config: cat /etc/config/wireless Look for the key='your password' line in the wifi-iface section.
For the Padavan firmware:
cat /etc/wireless/rt2860ap.dat | grep WPAPSKIf the commands donβt work, try alternative ways:
- π /tmp/etc/config/wireless (time-file)
- π /etc_ro/wireless/mt7620/mt7620.dat (for MediaTek chips)
- π /var/config_profile (version)
What to do if the Telnet is disabled?
5. Reset router to factory settings (if nothing helped)
If all previous methods fail, a hard reset remains, which will return the router to the out-of-the-box state, including the default password (see Section 1).
How to reset your settings:
βοΈ Preparation for resetting the Xiaomi router
- Find the Reset button on the back of the router (usually in the recess).
- Press and hold it for 10-15 seconds (until all the indicators flash).
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).
- Connect to a network with a name Xiaomi_XXXX (password - from the sticker).
What happens after the reset:
- β Wi-Fi password will become standard (with sticker).
- β Port settings, DMZ, UPnP will reset.
- β The account will remain in the account (if it was).
- β The provider settings (e.g. PPPoE) will disappear and will have to be re-entered.
π‘
Once reset, the router can automatically update the firmware to the latest version. If you need a specific version of the software (for example, for compatibility with custom firmware), turn off the Internet cable before reset.
β οΈ Attention: On Xiaomi routers with MiWiFi firmware R3P And a new reset via the Reset button may not work due to protection against accidental pressing. In this case, use the program reset via the admin panel (System tools). β Reboot. β Reset the settings).
6. Alternative methods: if the router is tied to the provider
If your Xiaomi router was issued by a provider (for example, MTS, Beeline or Dom.ru), standard methods may not work.
Your actions:
- π Call the ISP and ask for access data, and they usually store passwords in their database.
- π Check the contract or the box from the router β sometimes the providers specify a unique password there.
- π§ If the router is blocked under the provider, resetting the settings may not help - you will need firmware through TFTP (see spoiler below).
How to flash a Xiaomi router through TFTP if it is blocked by the provider?
Signs of "provider" blocking:
- π« It is impossible to log into the admin panel on 192.168.31.1 (redirects to the provider page).
- π Settings WAN hidden or blocked.
- π‘ The network name contains the provider name (e.g., the name of the provider, MTS_WiFi_XXXX).
7.How to avoid losing your password in the future
To avoid searching for a password every time, follow the following simple rules:
- π Save your data in a safe place: Take a photo of the sticker from the router and save the photo to the cloud (Google Drive, Mi Cloud, 1Password). Send yourself an email with the topic "Passwords from the Xiaomi router".
- π Regularly update the firmware β new versions fix vulnerabilities that allow you to crack the password.
- π Use complex passwords (at least) 12 symbols, with numbers and special symbols: Xiaomi_AX3000!2026.
- π± Link the router to Mi Account β this will allow you to manage it remotely and restore access.
What not to do:
- β Leave a default password (especially if the router is connected to the Internet).
- β Store password in notes on your smartphone without protection.
- β Use the same passwords for Wi-Fi and admin panel.
π‘
In the Mi Home app, you can enable the option "Backup router settings", then all data (including passwords) will automatically be saved to your Mi Account.
