The black screen on Xiaomi is one of the most frightening malfunctions. The phone may not respond to buttons, vibrate when charging, or even make notification sounds, but the image never appears. 80 percent of the time, the problem is solved without visiting a service center, but it's important to properly diagnose the cause. This article will help you understand why Xiaomi's screen has turned black, what to do first, and when it's really time to carry the device for repair.
We analyzed hundreds of cases with Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4/X5, Mi 11/12/13 and other popular smartphones of the brand. It turned out that 65% of the software (failures after the update, viruses, application conflicts), 25% of hardware problems (failure, battery, motherboard), and only 10% of mechanical damage (falls, moisture).
1. First steps: what to check before repair
Before you panic, make sure that the problem is not the trivial things.
- π Charging and battery: connect your phone to another cable and power supply (preferably the original one). If the charging indicator is not on, try charging from your computer or power bank. Sometimes a black screen appears due to the battery's full discharge before the battery is fully discharged. 0%, required 10-15 Recharge minutes for the smartphone to react.
- π Forced reboot: press the power button on 15-20 If the phone vibrates or the Mi logo appears, the system is trying to start.
- π Sound signals: call your phone from another device or turn on the alarm. If you hear a sound but the screen is black, the problem is the display or the plume.
- π‘ In a dark room, light up the light at an angle on the screen, and if you can barely see the image, the backlight module has failed.
If you've been doing this, you've got to go into a deeper diagnosis, and notice that if you've dropped your device in front of a black screen, urinated it, or overheated it, you're likely to need hardware repairs.
2. Software glitches: how to recover your phone without losing data
Most often, a black screen is caused by software errors, such as a failed MIUI update, application conflict, or system file corruption, in which case Xiaomiβs standard recovery tools will help.
Method 1: Booting in Safe Mode
If your phone vibrates or makes sounds, but the screen doesnβt work, try running it in Safe Mode:
- Press the power button before the Mi logo appears.
- As soon as the logo appears, immediately press and hold the volume button.
- Release when the Safe Mode sign appears at the bottom of the screen.
This mode disables all third-party applications. If the screen is running, there's a problem in one of the installed software. Delete recently added programs or reset.
Method 2: Recovery with Mi Recovery
If Safe Mode didnβt help, try resetting the settings through the Recovery:
- Turn off the phone (clip the power + volume up for 10 seconds).
- Press Power + Volume up until the Mi Recovery menu appears.
- Select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data (manage volume buttons, confirmation β power).
- After resetting, restart your phone (Reboot β Reboot to System).
Turn off the phone from charging
Download the latest firmware for your model (in case of flashing)
Prepare. OTG-cable (if necessary, to be stitched through the USB)
Remember your Mi Account details (if your Mi Account was enabled)
-->
Important: This method will delete all data from internal memory! If the phone was enabled sync with Mi Cloud, you can restore contacts and some files after logging in to your account.
β οΈ Note: If you've been trying to get root rights in front of a black screen or installing custom firmware, a standard backup may not work).
3. Hardware malfunctions: when the "iron" is to blame
If the software methods didn't work, the problem is the hardware, and here are the most common reasons:
| Malfunction | Signs. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Display plume damaged | The screen blinks, stripes appear, the phone works, but no image | Replacement of the plume (cost) 800-2500 β½) |
| The battery went out of order. | The phone does not respond to charging, but sometimes it is switched on from an external source. | Battery replacement (1500-4000 β½) |
| Oxidation of contacts after moisture | Corrosion on the connectors, the phone overheats, spontaneously reboots | Cleaning with alcohol + drying (500-1500 β½) |
| Maternity board malfunction | The phone does not show signs of life, does not warm, does not vibrate. | Diagnostics in the service (repair from 3000) β½) |
You can only check the battery and the plume yourself.
- Take your phone apart (see YouTube for instructions for your model).
- Unplug the battery for 5 minutes, then plug it back in and try to turn it on.
- Check the display plume for damage (pouring, tears).

β οΈ Attention: disassembling Xiaomi phone voids warranty! If the device is warranty service, carry it to the official service center without Attempts self-repair.
4. Fastboot flashing: the extreme method
If the phone doesnβt turn on, but the computer βseesβ it (defined as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 or the like), you can try flashing it over the Fastboot. This method is suitable for models on Qualcomm processors (Redmi Note 9/10/11, POCO X3/F3, etc.).
You'll need:
- π₯οΈ Windows computer 10/11
- π Original. USB-cable
- π₯ Firmware for your model (download from the official Xiaomi website)
- π οΈ The Mi Flash Tool
Instructions:
- Install Qualcomm and Mi Flash Tool drivers.
- Turn off the phone, press Volume Down + Power to log in to Fastboot.
- Connect your phone to your PC. Android Bootloader Interface should appear in the Device Manager.
- In the Mi Flash Tool, select the downloaded firmware (file with the extension.tgz).
- Press Refresh, then Flash, and it takes 5-10 minutes.
1. reconnect the cable to another USB-port (preferably 2.0).
2. disable driver signatures in Windows (via gpedit.msc).
3. Use another computer (sometimes drivers conflict).-->
Critical information: Fastboot flashing deletes all data, including photos and messages! If your phone had important files, try extracting them first EDL-Mode (requires boxing or specialist).
5. Black screen after MIUI update: what to do
Many users experience a black screen immediately after a system update, which is due to:
- π Bagami in the new version MIUI (especially relevant for betta firmware).
- π Incompatibility with custom Recaveri (TWRP).
- π± Conflict with root rights or modified system files.
Decisions:
- Reverse to the previous version: Download the old firmware with Xiaomi Firmware Updater. Sweat it through Fastboot (instruction above).
- Cache cleaning: Enter Recovery (Nutrition + Volume Up). Select Wipe & Reset β Wipe Cache.
Deletion of Magisk/TWRP
- If the root is standing, run the original boot.img through fastboot flash boot.img.
π‘
If the black screen appears after an OTA update (over the air), never interrupt the process! Wait at least 30 minutes - sometimes the system "hangs" during the application optimization phase.
6 When to carry to the service: signs of serious breakdowns
There are situations when self-repair is impossible or dangerous.
- π₯ The phone fell from a height or was subjected to a strong vibration (risk of chip failure).
- π Liquid was injected (even if a few days have passed - corrosion may occur later).
- π₯ The phone overheated (for example, after charging with a non-original adapter).
- π οΈ On the screen appeared divorces, stripes or broken pixels before the complete shutdown.
- π The battery is swollen (this is visible from the raised back cover or the gap between the screen and the case).
The cost of repair in official Xiaomi services:
- Display replacement: 3000β12 000 β½ (model-wise).
- Battery replacement: 1500β4000 β½.
- Maternity Board Repair: From 5000 β½ (in difficult cases, up to 15,000 β½).
- Cleaning after moisture: 1000β3000 β½.
Before the service visit:
- Check if they have original parts for your model.
- Ask about the work guarantee (at least 3 months).
- If the phone is warranty, do not disassemble it yourself - this will cancel the service.
7 How to Avoid Black Screens in the Future
Prevention will help prevent repeated failures:
- π Update regularly MIUI, Avoid Betta versions if you are not ready for bugs.
- π‘οΈ Install a reliable antivirus (e.g. Avast or Bitdefender).
- π Use only original chargers.
- π± Do not install applications from unknown sources.
- πΎ Make backups regularly through Settings β Additionally. β Backup.
- π« Avoid mechanical damage (use a cover and protective glass).
If your Xiaomi is already βglutchingβ (braking, spontaneously rebooting), perform a diagnosis through the engineering menu:
- Enter the dialer code: ##4636##.
- Select Testing and check all modules (screen, sensors, battery).
