You put your smartphone on the table, and after a few minutes it suddenly lit up with the screen, although no one touched the power button? Or Xiaomi wakes up in the middle of the night with a characteristic boot sound? This problem occurs in owners of Redmi, POCO and Mi devices of different generations - from the budget Redmi Note 8 to the flagship Xiaomi 13 Pro. In 80% of cases, this is not a critical failure, but the result of software failures or improper settings. But you can not ignore the symptom: constant spontaneous switching drains the battery, overheats the processor and can signal serious malfunctions.
In this article, weβll look at all the possible reasons Xiaomi is turning on on its own, from the banal hanging of the power button to hidden MIUI features you didnβt know about. Youβll learn how to tell a hardware defect from a software bug in 3 minutes, what settings to check first, and when to bring your phone to the service.
1. The power button hanging is the most common cause
In 45% of cases, Xiaomi spontaneously turned on is due to a mechanical malfunction of the power button. Over time, dust accumulates under the panel, moisture gets (even from sweaty hands), or contacts wear out, resulting in a false signal about pressing, even though you did not touch the phone.
How to check:
- π Visual inspection: light a flashlight on the button at an angle - if a gap is visible or it is drowned unevenly, this is a sign of wear and tear.
- π΅ Sound test: press the on button and listen - creaking or extraneous noises indicate debris hit.
- π± Software Diagnostics: Install the Button Test app from Google Play and check the buttonβs response to clicks.
If the button really catches, a compressed air purge will temporarily help (a canister for cleaning equipment). But this will not save you for a long time - you will need to replace the button in the service (cost from 500 to 1500 rubles depending on the model).
β οΈ Warning: Do not use alcohol or wet wipes to clean the button! The liquid can leak in and cause corrosion of the contacts. A soft brush or cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol will do the dry cleaning (99%).
2. MIUI firmware failures: bugs and hidden features
MIUI's shell is known for its features, which sometimes work too much. For example, the function of automatically turning on when charging can even be triggered by static electricity. And in some versions of the firmware (especially MIUI 12.5 and MIUI 13) there was a bug with false sleep interruptions, which caused the phone to wake up every 10-15 minutes.
What to do:
- Update your firmware to the latest version via Settings β About Phone β Update MIUI.
- Turn off Automatic Turn on: Settings β Display β Auto-Screen On β Disable All Options
- Reset MIUI settings (not data!): Settings β Additional β Reset settings β Reset MIUI settings
If the problem appears after the update, try to roll back to the previous firmware version via Fastboot.Instructions for specific models, look for 4PDA forum in the theme of your device.

3. Battery problems: bloating and short circuits
If Xiaomi's phone not only turns on itself, but also gets very hot, discharges quickly or turns off at 20 to 30 percent charge, the battery is to blame. Over time, lithium-polymer batteries degrade, their capacity drops, and internal resistance rises, leading to false signals from the power controller, which perceives the power surges as a command to turn on.
Signs of a faulty battery:
- π Bloating (check if the phone is on the table).
- π‘οΈ Overheating even in standby mode (above 40)Β°C).
- β‘ Sharp jumps in charge level (from 50% to 20% per second).
- π Unintentional disconnection / on when connecting charging.
Check the status of the battery through the engineering menu:
#4636### β Information about the batteryIf your health is below 70% or your resting temperature is above 35Β°C, you need to replace the battery. Don't put it off! A bloated battery can damage the motherboard or even ignite.
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The phone is turned on when vibrating (call, notification) | Short circuit in the battery | Battery replacement |
| Spontaneous turn on at night (after 4-6 hours after switching off) | Degradation of the power controller | Diagnostics in the service |
| The screen lights up when connected to a USB (even when the phone is off) | Charging port malfunction | Cleaning/replacement of the connector |
External devices and peripherals
Sometimes Xiaomi is turned on not because of internal problems, but because of the connected accessories.
- π§ Headphones with microphone: if the socket is 3.5 mm (or USB-C) oxidized contacts, the phone can perceive this as a command to turn on.
- π Chargers: Cheap unprotected cables can deliver unstable voltages, causing false positives.
- πΆ Wireless tags (NFC): If the phone is lying next to a credit card or tag, it can activate the chip. NFC and wake up the system.
How to check:
- Turn off all accessories and watch your phone for 12 to 24 hours.
- Try another charger (original from Xiaomi).
- Turn off NFC in settings: Settings β Connection and Sharing β NFC.
If the problem has disappeared, one of the accessories is to blame, most often the "problem" are cables with damaged insulation or headphones with a custom plug solder.

To check the charging cable, connect it to another phone and move at the bending point. If the screen of the second device flashes or there are notifications about connection / disconnection, the cable is faulty.
5. Viruses and malware
An unlikely but possible scenario is the action of a virus that mimics button pressing or exploits MIUI vulnerabilities.
- π± Unlocked bootloader (Bootloader Unlocked).
- π Established APK source.
- π Connecting to public Wi-Fi without VPN.
Signs of infection:
- The phone is switched on at the same time (e.g. every day at 3:00).
- Unknown apps appear on the menu.
- Traffic or battery consumption has increased dramatically.
How to treat:
- Install Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light and scan the system.
- Remove suspicious apps through Settings β Apps.
- If the virus is deep in the system, make a complete reset (Settings β Additional β Reset).
β οΈ Note: Some viruses disguise themselves as system processes (e.g. com.android.system) and check the process name through Google search before deleting it, otherwise you can delete the critical component. MIUI.
Hardware malfunctions: motherboard and plumes
If all the previous methods didn't work, the problem is the iron, and most often the fault is:
- π§ Power button plume: moved away or damaged (especially after falls).
- π± Power controller: the chip on the motherboard responsible for power control.
- π Charging connector: oxidation or cold soldering of contacts.
Diagnosis:
- Try to turn on the phone without SIM-Cards and memory cards β if the problem is gone, it is the fault of the slot.
- Connect to your PC via USB and check logs via ADB: adb logcat | grep "PowerManager" (look for lines with "Unexpected wakeup").
- If the phone turns on when you press on a certain area of the body - this is a sign of a detached plume.
Repair of such malfunctions requires disassembly of the phone and soldering work. in the Xiaomi service, the diagnosis will take from 300 rubles, and for replacing the plume or soldering of the controller - from 1500 to 3000 rubles.

7 Hidden MIUI features you didn't know about
MIUI has a few βfeaturesβ that may seem like a bug:
- π Automatic Enablement for Notifications: in Display Settings β Auto-enabled screen can be enabled with the option to Show notifications that wake up the phone at important alerts.
- β° Alarm clock off: If you set an alarm on your phone that is off, it will turn on 5 minutes before the signal (to boot in time).
- π‘ Network search: With a weak signal, the phone may wake up to reconnect to the tower.
Turn off these options if you donβt need them:
Settings β Sound and vibration β Alarm clock in the off state β Disable
β SIM- Maps and Mobile Networks β Network Search β ManuallyAlso check the developer mode (Settings β About Phone β MIUI version β tap 7 times). There can be debugging on USB or Do not turn off the screen.

If the phone turns on at exactly 3:00 or 4:00, it is not a virus, but a planned MIUI cache cleanup task, which is deactivated via ADB by the adb shell dumpsys deviceidle force-idle command.
