Xiaomi's smartphone screen is not just a display, it's a key element of interaction with the device. When it suddenly darkens, dims or stops displaying normally, it's unsettling: you can't tell if the phone is ringing, if notifications are coming, and sometimes it seems like the gadget is dead. But don't panic: 80 percent of the time, the problem is solvable, often without visiting a service center.
The screen darkening on Xiaomi (whether itβs the Redmi Note 10, POCO X3 or the flagship Mi 13) can be caused by software failures as well as hardware malfunctions. Itβs important to properly diagnose the cause so as not to waste time on useless manipulations. For example, if a burned-out LED backlight is to blame, neither flashing nor resetting will help β it will require disassembling the device. On the other hand, a bug in the MIUI system can simulate the βdeathβ of the screen, although in fact the display is serviceable.
In this article, we will look at all possible causes of blackouts, from the banal battery discharge to serious motherboard failures, and give clear instructions on how to bring the display back to life. Particular attention will be paid to models with AMOLED- screens (for example, Xiaomi 12T or Black Shark 5), where the problem is often associated with the degradation of organic LEDs.
1.Discharged battery or charging problems
The most obvious but often overlooked reason is the critically low battery charge: When the charge level drops below 3-5%, the smartphone may turn on, but the screen remains dark or barely glows, because MIUI prioritizes power for critical components (processor, memory), and the display lights are no longer enough.
How to check:
- π Connect your phone to a charger (preferably the original one from Xiaomi with Quick Charge support). Wait 10-15 minutes β if the screen comes to life, the problem is discharge.
- π Try another charger or cable, and sometimes the contacts in the USB-C connector oxidize, and the charging is intermittent.
- π If the phone doesn't respond to charging, try pressing the power button for 20-30 seconds (forced reboot).
If the screen flashes after connecting to the charge or shows the MI logo but does not load further, this may indicate a battery failure (bloating, short circuit) or damage to the power controller.
β οΈ Warning: If the phone gets hot when charging but the screen doesn't turn on, disconnect it immediately from the mains! This could be a sign of a battery short circuit - a risk of fire.

2. Software failures (MIUI, firmware, applications)
Software errors are the second most common cause of screen darkening, and they can manifest in different ways:
- π± The screen is turned on, but the image is barely visible (dim, as if the backlight is off).
- π The display flashes or spontaneously changes brightness.
- π₯οΈ The phone is working (sounds, vibrations are there), but the screen remains black.
Most often it's the fault:
- π Bugs in MIUI (especially after the update). For example, there was an error in MIUI 14 that caused the sensor to stop responding to touch and the screen to dim.
- π¦ Application conflict: Some programs (especially those with SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW rights) may block normal display performance.
- π§ Incorrect brightness settings. Settings menu β Display β Autobrightness may have been affected by the light sensor.
How to fix it:
- Restart your phone in Safe Mode (press the power button β hold off βSwitch offβ β press βOKβ on the request for Safe Mode). If the screen is working normally, the third-party app is to blame.
- Reset the display settings: Settings β System β Reset settings β Reset the display settings.
- If the problem has occurred after the update, try to roll back to the previous version of MIUI via Fastboot.

Critical information: On Xiaomi models with Qualcomm processors (for example, POCO F3) after a failed update, the protection against the "brick" (EDL-mode) may work, and the screen will be dark, but the phone will be determined by the computer as QDLoader 9008.
3. Damage to the plume or display contacts
Physical damage is one of the most frustrating causes, as it often requires disassembly of the device. The display plume (a flexible cable connecting the screen to the motherboard) can damage due to:
- π₯ Strikes or falls (even if the body is intact).
- π§ Improper disassembly (e.g. after self-replacement of the battery).
- π₯ Overheating (the plume can "step away" from soldering contacts).
Signs of a plume problem:
- The screen flashes when you press certain areas of the body.
- The image appears only at a certain angle.
- Colors are distorted (for example, green or red predominates).
- The touchscreen works, but there is no backlight.
How to check:
- Connect your phone to your computer. If it's defined as a removable disk, for example, but the screen is dark, the plume is probably damaged.
- Light the flashlight on the display at an angle, if you can barely see the image, the problem is the backlight or the plume.
- With a light tap on the area near the power button or the camera, try to move the plume, and if the screen goes up for a second, the diagnosis is confirmed.
β οΈ Warning: On AMOLED- screen models (e.g., Xiaomi 11T Pro), the plume is often integrated into the display module. Replacing it requires a complete screen replacement, which is 2-3 times more expensive than repairing the plume on IPS- displays (e.g., Redmi 9A).
| Xiaomi model | Screen type | Cost of plume replacement (β½) | Cost of screen replacement (β½) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10 Pro | AMOLED | - (indistinct) | 8 000β12 000 |
| POCO X3 NFC | IPS LCD | 1 500β2 500 | 4 000β6 000 |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 | AMOLED | - (indistinct) | 12 000β18 000 |
| Redmi 9C | IPS LCD | 1 000β1 800 | 3 000β4 500 |
4. Failure of illumination (LED or AMOLED)
The backlight is a separate component that can fail regardless of the display itself. In IPS- screens (e.g. Redmi 8A), the backlight is handled by LED-lent, and in AMOLED (e.g. Xiaomi 12), each pixel is individually highlighted.
- π The screen is completely dark, but in bright light, you can see a dim image.
- π¦ The backlight is uneven (one side of the screen is lighter than the other).
- π‘ The brightness spontaneously changes or βpulsates.β
Reasons:
- π LEDs burned out (often after a voltage surge when charging).
- π§ Remove the light contacts from the board (after a fall or vibration).
- π οΈ Degradation AMOLED (natural wear of organic LEDs after 2-3 years).
How to temporarily bring the screen back to life (if the contacts are to blame):
- Put the phone on a soft surface.
- Light taps on the back (in the camera area) try to βshakeβ the contacts.
- Heat the back cover with a hairdryer (temperature no higher than 50Β°C) β sometimes this helps to restore the connection.

5. Damage to the motherboard or graphics chip
If the screen has darkened after falling, getting moisture or overheating, and all previous methods have not worked, the problem may lie in the motherboard.
- π₯οΈ Graphics chip (in Qualcomm or Mediatek processors).
- π Display controller (responsible for transmitting the signal to the screen).
- π§ Food chains (after corrosion from moisture).
Signs:
- The phone is turned on, but the screen remains black (not even backlit).
- On the external display (via HDMI or Miracast) there is an image, but on the main one there is no image.
- Artifacts on the screen (stripes, flickering, distorted colors) before completely darkening.
Diagnosis:
- Connect your phone to your TV via USB-C β HDMI adapter. If you have a picture, there's a problem with the display module or the plume.
- Check if the device is detected in Fastboot (Put Volume Down + Power). If so, the fee is partially operational.
- Listen, does the phone make boot sounds (vibration, melody) and if it doesn't, the board could die.
β οΈ Warning: On models with a Mediatek processor (e.g. Redmi 9), memory chips (eMMC or UFS often fall off after a fall) causing the phone to turn on, but the screen does not show the image, and the system does not load, in which case a chip soldering is required, which costs 5,000-10,000 β½.
π‘
If the phone falls into water and the screen turns dark, DO NOT turn it on! immediately remove the battery (if possible) and put the device in rice or silica gel for 2-3 days. Turning on the wet phone leads to short circuit and irreversible damage to the board.
6 Degradation of the AMOLED- screen (pixel burnout)
AMOLED- displays lose their brightness over time due to degradation of organic LEDs. It's a natural process, but it accelerates when:
- π₯ Prolonged operation at maximum brightness.
- π± Frequent use of static elements (e.g., navigation panels).
- π Overheating (e.g. during games or charging).
Signs of burnout:
- The screen became dull, lost the saturation of colors.
- On a monotonous background (for example, white) you can see βshadowsβ from icons or taskbar.
- The brightness spontaneously decreases even with manual adjustment.
How to check:
- Open a pure white image on your phone (for example, through a gallery), if you see colored spots or uneven backlights, the screen degrades.
- Use a burnout test (apps like Screen Test from Google Play).
Decisions:
- π§ Calibration of the screen through the engineering menu (code ##6484## β Display β Screen calibration).
- π Replacement of the display module (the only radical method).
- π± Using a dark theme and lowering brightness to slow down degradation.
π‘
AMOLED- screens on Xiaomi burn out faster if you use maximum brightness often. The optimal level is 60-70% when you adjust automatically.
7.Influence of external factors (moisture, magnets, temperature)
Sometimes the screen gets darker due to external influences that users donβt always take into account:
- π§ Moisture: Even if the phone hasn't sunk, high humidity (such as in the bathroom) can cause contacts to corrosion.
- 𧲠Magnetic fields: If the phone was lying next to powerful magnets (speakers, charging), it could damage the Hall sensor or compass, which indirectly affects the display.
- βοΈ Extreme temperatures: When the screen is overcooled (below 0Β°C) or overheated (above 40Β°C), the screen may temporarily darken.
What to do:
- If the phone is overheated, let it cool in the shade (not in the fridge!).
- If you get moisture, do not turn on the device until it is completely dry (at least 24 hours).
- Check if metal objects are attracted to the phone (a sign of magnetization).
