Xiaomi TV remote doesn’t work – all the reasons and ways to repair

Did you press the switch on the Xiaomi Mi TV remote and the TV didn't even blink? Or did the buttons stop switching channels and the volume control works once in a while? This problem is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi smart TVs, from budget Mi TV 4A to flagship Mi QLED TV 75. In 80% of cases, the remote malfunction is solved in 5-10 minutes without contacting the service center.

We analyzed user feedback on 4PDA, Mi Community and service centers, and tested solutions on 12 Xiaomi TV models (from 2017 Mi TV 3S to Xiaomi TV A Pro 2026).In the article, all possible reasons why the remote does not work, step-by-step instructions with photos and videos, as well as hidden settings that are not written in the official documentation.

If the remote is physically damaged (broken, filled with liquid, bitten by a pet), it is easier to replace it - it will cost more to repair the new device.

1.The battery is dead, the most obvious but often ignored cause

It sounds trivial, but in 60% of cases, Xiaomi’s remote doesn’t work because of the batteries that are dead, and the problem doesn’t always manifest itself in the same way:

• 🔋 The remote doesn't respond at all -- no buttons are working, no lights are on.
• 📶 The buttons work every once in a while, you have to press 2-3 times.
• 🔊 Some features fail selectively (e.g., does not switch channels, but adjusts volume).

Xiaomi packs the remotes with AAA (little finger) or CR2032 (tablet) batteries, depending on the model. Even if the battery is “almost alive”, its voltage may not be enough for stable operation, especially for button-lit remotes (for example, Xiaomi Mi Remote Pro), which discharge the batteries 2-3 times faster.

Open the back cover of the remote (plug with a screwdriver or nail)

Remove the batteries and check them with a multimeter (should be ≥1.2V for AAA and ≥2.8V for CR2032)

Clean the contacts in the remote with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol

Install new batteries (preferably alkaline batteries, such as Duracell or Energizer)

2. Obstacles to the signal path or failure of the IR transmitter

Xiaomi remotes come in two types: Infrared (IR) – use invisible light signal (most models, including Mi TV 4S/4A/4C). Bluetooth – wireless radio communication (Mi Remote Pro remotes, Xiaomi TV Master and new models 2023-2026).

If you have an IR remote, check:

• 👁️ Are there any obstacles between the remote and the TV (even a glass or mirror can block the signal).
• ☀️ Does the remote not shine direct sunlight — it clogs up the IR signal.
• 💡 Whether fluorescent lamps or LED- backlights are nearby, they are causing interference.
• 📱 Whether another remote is nearby (e.g., from an air conditioner) – signal conflicts are possible.

To check the operation of the IR transmitter:

1. Turn on the camera on your smartphone and point the remote to it.
2. Press any button – if the transmitter is working, you will see a flicker of purple light on the phone screen.
3. If there is no flicker, the transmitter is broken (requires repair or replacement of the remote).

3. Reset the remote settings - if it "out of sync" with the TV

Sometimes the Xiaomi remote stops working after updating the TV firmware, resetting to factory settings or prolonged downtime, in which case the software reset helps.

Resetting methods depending on the remote model:

After resetting, the remote may require reconfiguration.

1. Point the remote control to the TV from a distance of 1-2 meters.
2. Press and hold OK + Menu (for IR) or Voice Search + Back (for Bluetooth) before the message appears on the screen.
3. Follow the instructions on the TV (usually you need to confirm the pairing with the OK button).

4. Update of TV firmware - if the remote is buggy after the update

Xiaomi regularly releases updates for its TVs, but sometimes they contain bugs that stop remotes from working. For example, after upgrading to MIUI TV 3.0 in 2023, many Mi TV 4S users complained about buttons hanging or the complete inoperability of the remote.

To check and update the firmware:

1. Turn on the TV with a button on the case (if the remote does not work).
2. Go to Settings → About TV → System Update.
3. If a new version is available, install it.
4. After the update, restart the TV (unplug the socket for 30 seconds).

If the update didn’t help or the TV hangs on the logo after the update, try to roll back to the previous firmware version:

Download the necessary firmware version from the official Xiaomi website (Support section)

Unpack the archive and copy the update.zip file to the flash drive (FAT32)

Insert the flash drive in the USB- TV port

Press the Menu button on the remote (or on the TV case) and turn on the TV

⚠️ Warning: Rolling back firmware may result in data loss (saved settings, accounts). Before the procedure, back up via Settings → System → Backup.

5 Mechanical damage to the remote – what can be repaired independently

If the remote was falling, wet or sat on it (yes, this is a common reason!), could be damaged:

• 🔧 Button contacts – oxidized or detached.
• 💧 Fee is corrosion after liquid is ingested.
• 📡 IR transmitter -- the glass cracked or the contact broke.
• 🔋 Battery contacts - bent or covered with plaque.

What you can do on your own:

1. Disassemble the remote: 1. Carefully tuck the latches of the back cover with a flat screwdriver. 2. Remove the board - it is usually attached to 2-3 screws. 3. Take a picture of the location of the buttons and wires before disassembling!
2. Clean contacts: - Wipe the contacts of buttons and batteries with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. - For oxidized contacts, use an eraser or small sandpaper (very carefully!).
3. Check the buttons: - Press each button separately - if any "sticks", bend the contact platform. - If the button fails, put a piece of foil or thin plastic under it.

⚠️ Warning: If you see dark spots, bloated capacitors or burnt tracks on the board, don't try to fix the remote yourself - this can be dangerous (the risk of short circuit).

If the remote is wet, remove the batteries and dry it in rice or silica gel for 24 hours. Don't use a hair dryer - it can melt the plastic!

6. Resetting the TV to factory settings is an extreme measure

If all the previous methods didn't work and the remote still doesn't work, maybe the problem is the software failure of the TV, in which case hard reset will help.

⚠️ Note: After the reset will be removed:

• 📺 All installed apps (including Kodi, Netflix, YouTube).
• 🔑 Save Wi-Fi passwords and accounts (Google, Mi Account).
• ⚙️ Individual settings of image and sound.

How to reset:

1. Turn on the TV with a button on the body (usually it is on the side or bottom).
2. Go to Settings → System → Reset and Reset → Reset settings.
3. Enter. PIN-code (default 0000 or 1234).
4. Confirm the reset and wait for the reboot (it will take 3-5 minutes).

After discharge:

1. Set up your TV as new (select language, connect to Wi-Fi).
2. Re-conjugate the remote (Section 3).
3. Update the firmware to the latest version (Section 4).

💡

If after reset, the remote worked, but after a while the problem returned - the fault of the firmware. Try to roll back to the older version or contact Xiaomi for flashing through JTAG.

7.Alternative ways to control the TV if the remote is broken

While you are fixing or waiting for a new remote, Xiaomi TV can be controlled in other ways:

• 📱 Mi Remote App (available for Android and iOS): 1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play. 2. Connect your phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network. 3. Select a TV model from the device list.
• 🖥️ Buttons on the TV body are usually: Power, Menu, Volume +/-, Channels +/-.
• 🎮 Gamepad – Connect via Bluetooth (e.g. Xiaomi Game Controller or DualShock 4).
• 🖱️ Mouse and keyboard - through USB Bluetooth (comfortable for navigating menus).

If you have a Xiaomi TV with Android TV, you can control your voice via Google Assistant:

1. Say, "OK, Google, turn on Mi TV."
2. Or use the command, "OK, Google, switch to NTV on Mi TV."

The TV and phone must be linked to the same Google account.
