Xiaomi stopped turning on after a failed upgrade, experimenting with custom firmware or resetting? The screen remains black, the device does not respond to charging, and the computer does not see it? Most likely, you have encountered a so-called βbrickβ β a state where the phone turns into a useless βpiece of iron.β But donβt panic: in 90% of cases, Xiaomi (including Redmi, POCO and Mi) can be brought back to life even without going to the service center.
The reasons for bricking are different: interrupted firmware through Fastboot, an error when unlocking the bootloader, an incompatible version of MIUI, or even a banal failure when updating by air (OTA). The key is to correctly diagnose the type of brick: soft (the device responds to buttons but does not load) or hard (the complete absence of signs of life), which determines the choice of recovery method.
In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of Xiaomi resuscitation, from the simplest (via Recovery) to advanced (EDL mode and soldering testpoints). Importantly, not all methods are universal β some require an unlocked bootloader, others work only on certain processors (Qualcomm vs Mediatek).
1.Diagnostics: What type of βbrickβ does your Xiaomi have?
Before you start rebuilding, determine how badly the device is damaged, and here are the key signs of the different types of bricks:
- π Soft brick: The phone vibrates when charging, the indicator lights up but doesn't turn on. It's possible to hit Fastboot or Recovery when holding the buttons.
- π₯οΈ Bootloop (Cyclical Reboot): The device is constantly rebooted on the logo MI Redmi, but responds to button combinations.
- π Hard Brick: Complete lack of reaction β no vibration, no indicator, no computer detects the device even like Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- π Brick with bootloader lock: Phone is detected in Fastboot, but gives an error This device is locked.
For an accurate diagnosis, try the following steps:
- Connect your phone to charge for 10 to 15 minutes, and if the charging light flashes or burns, it's a soft brick.
- Hold the Power. + Volume Down for 10-15 seconds if the Fastboot menu appears. FASTBOOT) β device is reconstitutable through firmware.
- Connect your phone to your PC. If an unknown device with a name appears in Device Manager. QHUSB_BULK Qualcomm is a mode of operation. EDL, special-action.
Critical: If your Xiaomi doesnβt show any signs of life at all (it doesnβt warm, it doesnβt vibrate), the problem may be in the hardware β for example, the battery plume has soldered off or the power controller has burned, in which case you can not do without disassembly and soldering.
2. Method 1: Recovery through Mi Recovery (for soft brick)
If your phone comes into Recovery (a menu with an Android robot and items in English/Chinese), you're lucky. This method works even with a locked bootloader and doesn't require a computer.
To get into Recovery:
- Turn off your phone (if it's in bootloop, wait for the battery to run out).
- Press Power + Volume Up and hold for 10-15 seconds until the menu appears.
- If the screen doesnβt respond to touch, use volume buttons for navigation and Power to select.
Further action:
- π Choose Reboot. β Reboot to System β sometimes helps with non-critical crashes.
- π§Ή Choose Wipe Data β WARNING: This will delete all data, including photos and apps!
- π₯ If the reset doesnβt work, try Connect with MiAssistant (requires a computer and Mi Flash Tool program).
βοΈ Preparing for Recovery through Recovery
β οΈ Note: On some models (POCO F1, Mi 8) after reset via Recovery, you may need to re-activate your Mi Account. If you forget your password, restore it in advance at account.xiaomi.com.
If Recovery is unavailable or if it gives you a Can't mount/data error, proceed to the following method.
Method 2: Fastboot Firmware (for unlocked bootloader)
The method is suitable if the phone is determined in Fastboot mode (when connected to the PC, it gives a device recognition sound, and Android Bootloader Interface appears in Device Manager).
Step-by-step:
- Download the official firmware for your model from new.c.mi.com. Choose the version of Fastboot (file with the extension.tgz or.zip).
- Unpack the archive into a folder without Cyrillic characters (e.g., C:\Xiaomi\ROM).
- Download and install the Mi Flash Tool.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (hold Volume Down + Power when connecting to your PC).
- In the Mi Flash Tool, click Select, specify the firmware folder, then Refresh (the device should appear). Select Clean All mode and press Flash.
It takes 5-10 minutes. It'll automatically restart when it's finished. If the firmware ends with an anti-rollback error, you're trying to install an older version of MIUI than the one before.
- π Find a firmware with a newer release date.
- π§ Use Clean All and Lock (but this will block the bootloader!).
What if the Mi Flash Tool canβt see the device?
| Mistake in Mi Flash | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| can't find 'flash_all.sh' | The wrong structure of the firmware folder | Unpack the entire archive, check for the file flash_all.bat |
| device not found | Phone not found on Fastboot | Check cable, USB port, drivers. Try the fastboot device command in CMD |
| anti-rollback check fail | The firmware is older than the current version | Download newer firmware or use Clean All and Lock |
| flash write failure | Memory section damaged. | Try flashing in EDL mode (method 4) |
Method 3: Unlock the bootloader (if it is locked)
If you see this device is locked when you connect to Fastboot, the bootloader is locked. Xiaomi allows you to officially unlock it, but you need a Mi Account that has been tied to the device at least 7 days ago (the rule is valid since 2022).
Instructions for unlocking:
- Download the Mi Unlock Tool and install it on PC.
- Sign in to the program under the same Mi Account as on your phone.
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode.
- Press Unlock and wait until it is completed (usually takes 1-3 minutes).
Once unlocked, you can flash your phone through Fastboot (method 2).
- π Unlocking will reset all data on the phone.
- π If your Mi Account is tied for less than 7 days, you will have to wait or use informal methods (risky!).
- π§ In some models (POCO X3 Pro, Redmi Note 10 Pro) may require firmware through the device after unlocking EDL.
π‘
If the Mi Unlock Tool gives you a "Couldn't unlock" error, try connecting the phone to another one. USB-port or use the original Xiaomi cable. Also check if debugging is enabled USB Developer settings (if the phone is still on).
β οΈ Note: Unlocking the bootloader will void the Xiaomi warranty. In addition, on some models (for example, the Mi 11 with the Snapdragon 888) after unlocking, you may experience problems with the module operation after unlocking. 5G Or cameras!
5. Method 4: Firmware through EDL (for hard brick)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is the last chance to recover a phone that doesnβt respond to any combination of buttons. In this mode, the firmware goes directly to the deviceβs memory, bypassing the bootloader. The method works on most Xiaomi with Qualcomm processors (for example, the Snapdragon 439/660/732G/865).
To run through EDL, you will need:
- π₯οΈ Windows computer 7/10/11 (on macOS/Linux method).
- π Original. USB-cable (better from the set).
- π¦ Firmware in.mbn or firehose format (can be found on forums) 4PDA or XDA).
- π οΈ Mi Flash Tool or QFil for older models).
Step-by-step:
- Install Qualcomm drivers (you can download here).
- Connect your phone to your PC by holding the Volume Up + Volume Down buttons (some models need to close the test points β see below).
- Device Manager should appear Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Start the Mi Flash Tool, select the firmware and press Flash.
If the phone doesn't go to EDL automatically, you'll need to close the test points, which is a risky procedure that requires disassembling the device.
- π Redmi Note 8 Pro: Two contacts under the battery, next to the SIM card connector.
- π POCO X3 NFC: contacts under the back cover, near the camera.
- π Mi 9T: points under the plastic cover covering the battery.
π‘
If you're not sure about your soldering skills, you better contact the service. A wrong circuit can finally kill the motherboard!
On models with a Mediatek processor (e.g. Redmi 9A, POCO C3), the EDL mode is called BROM and requires the use of the SP Flash Tool program instead of the Mi Flash.
Method 5: Contact a service center (if nothing helps)
If all of these methods fail, there are two options:
- The official service Xiaomi - guaranteed recovery, but with loss of data and possible lock bootloader. Cost: from 1,500 to 5 000 rubles (depending on the model).
- Unofficial workshops are often cheaper (from 1000 rubles), but the risk of running into unqualified specialists.
Before you bring your phone to the service:
- π Check if they will keep your data (usually not).
- π° Ask the final cost β some centers charge extra for βcomplicatedβ cases.
- β³ Find out the repair time (in the official service can take up to 2 weeks).
The addresses of official Xiaomi service centers in Russia can be found on the website mi.com/ru/service. Check reviews about a specific center before visiting β some refuse to restore phones with unlocked bootloader.
β οΈ Note: If your Xiaomi was purchased in China (the version for the Chinese market), the official service in Russia may refuse to serve it.
7.How to avoid a "brick" in the future: rules for safe firmware
To avoid repeating an unpleasant experience, follow these recommendations:
βοΈ Xiaomiβs Safe Firmware Rules
Additional advice:
- π Before the firmware charge the phone to 100% β this will reduce the risk of failure due to power outage.
- π Check the hash (MD5) Firmware downloads β fake files may contain viruses.
- π Donβt unlock the bootloader βfor the futureβ β it increases the risk of hacking your phone.
- π‘ Use official channels for updates (OTA Mi Flash Tool, not third-party utilities.
If you like custom firmware experiments (LineageOS, Pixel Experience), install TWRP Recovery, which will allow you to backup the entire system before changes. However, remember: custom firmware often deprives the phone of official support and can cause problems with Widevine (Netflix will not work in HD).
